It's ridiculous. I've seen 8th graders handle a new QB in the room more maturely than some in our fanbase this week. There is only one QB on the field at a time. These guys are used to the competition.
The players want to win games and whoever can get that done is who they want at QB.

That was great foresight by you, because Nunes actually played fairly well that game. We got out to a 28-0 lead at Toledo and never looked back.
I never felt worse than the 2019 game at Maryland. Devito kept running out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage or throwing INTs. Left at halftime. Saw later that SU lost by 43 points.

Pena is a loss but the addition of Angeli is a ten fold gain. We now have a QB room that can compete with any team on our schedule. Personally the LB addition is also a bigger gain for the team than Pena leaving because based on my observations we have some serious talent at WR. Easily the deepest room on the team. Its a shame Pena left but the DL kid is the biggest loss so far and we have just added two critical players to the roster. Great job by Fran and the staff.
Relative to where SU is vs PSU or Miami Pena is a bigger add for them than a loss for SU. Both those programs are in win now at the highest level modes, this is a bridge year for SU.

For what we are looking to accomplish it’s an opportunity for guys who are going to have major roles after this next season establish themselves.

Hello All, diehard Irish fan here. Steve Angeli will forever hold a place in our hearts after his heroics in the Orange Bowl, so came over to learn more about the situation he is going to. After reading some comments, thought I'd share some perspective.

Angeli has looked solid every time he's come on the field. Good command of the offense, quite accurate, and by all accounts he's a strong leader. I'd say the thing he needs to work on the most is pocket presence, which isn't unusual for quarterbacks without a ton of live game action.

As far as the situation he's leaving, CJ Carr is the most talented qb recruit ND has had since Jimmy Clausen, and by all accounts he looked terrific this spring. He made some throws in the spring game that were "wow" type throws that we haven't seen in awhile. There is a segment of the ND fanbase that is upset Steve isn't starting at Miami in our opener because it's a big ask of a qb with literally no game experience to start there week 1, but Freeman has always leaned towards talent over experience.

There is zero doubt in my mind that Steve would've been the backup this season if the current version of the transfer portal didn't exist. Our third qb, Minchey, is an athletic, high ceiling redshirt freshman that we didn't want to lose from the program, and if Steve was named the backup (if he was even willing to stick around for that), Minchey would've for sure left. And then you would've still had teams in Angeli's ear and risked losing both backup qbs, so it was too risky to do that.

I'm happy for Steve that he'll be in ND Stadium on Senior Day still. The dude truly loved ND and stuck around to battle for the qb spot when most players nowadays would've transferred out in the Fall portal. I wish him well.

I think the losing the locker room stuff is faux drama. The players know more than anybody how this is now a business. Factor that in with Fran's apparent up front style - I think the team is tight, and the recent interview with Barron, Meeks, Kyle, and Wax seems to prove that.
You know how to better "win" a locker room? Have the best QB possible as your starting QB.

Carney is:
27, 28 and 29 if we go with Angeli.
28 and 29 if Collins wins the job or eventually takes it over.
I'm not sure projections like this are particularly meaningful in the age of the portal especially when combined with Fran's aggressive recruiting.

I think they are in respect to retaining players. Could something else happen to change this? Sure. But that is the current likely path and it makes sense to both parties and worth stating.

Getting transfer QBs from Ohio State, LSU, and Notre Dame. Imagine thinking that even two years ago
Remember getting Funderburke from Arkansas years ago and everyone kept saying to put him in and questioning why he wasn’t playing. Usually when your transferring down its not because you’re excelling at the school you’re at. I know QB is a bit different because only 1can play. Kyle was different last year because he was highly successful at Ohio St. But the previous transfers from Florida and S Carolina had flip written all over them. I have my questions about Collins. I guess we won’t know unless we see him play. I feel a little better about Angeli but really it could go either way here. FWIW i do rate Angeli much much higher than i ever thought of CDRW and Davis.

More shocking was HOW we lost that game. There was a lot of optimism to start the season, but getting obliterated by a middling program like MD was unsettling to say the least.
Devito's lack of pocket presence and situational awareness was... mind boggling. -shudder-

If I remember right, the defense was atrocious too…? I feel like they ran it right down our throats over and over. Was that the same year ND basically walked it up and down the field on us every single possession?

I already like you more than TerryD

I hear you on retaining players, but we will have to agree to disagree with respect to the QB room. Fran is going to aggressively look to add talent and competetion there. How long will Carney be willing to wait his turn? What about Jakari? Projections from November had him - to borrow your phrase - on the "current likely path" to be next in line. Things change quickly as talent enters the portal.

FWIW, I do know that the staff really likes Carney's potential and maybe he could eventually beat out all comers. Is that "likely" having never seen him play at this level. IDK, neither does anyone else at this time, and that's the point.

I also think that recruiting QBs at P4 schools is evolving.

It used to be recruit top HS talent, with the top schools landing most of the blue chip prospects and others hoping to land diamonds in the rough with upside. Now, it appears to be wait your turn and go pick up a proven talent that some other school has developed, via the transfer portal.

And for a program like Syracuse, that enabled us to land players like McCord / Angeli, who we would never land out of HS.

I love Carney. I like Collins / Williams. But QB prospects are all crapshoots. And if our program's offensive identity enables us to go land blue chip transfers, that's more important than worrying about whether HS prospects are going to be chased off.

All you can go on is facts at hand today.

I love how you guys assume the next guy is always the guy! All things being equal Collins was the better QB. Should be a good competition.
I don’t think it’s going to be close. Clearly something was a miss with him.

I don't think that was clear at all. People are just extrapolating what Fran said Trebor said as a fact, and penalizing him because he missed the spring game.

If Collins was healthy and threw for 200 in the spring game you might be thinking differently
