From the reports we were hearing Collins was going to win the job. I hope it was hands down Angeli as QB1. But that isn't what we were being told.

Once upon a time, you were being told Donovan McNabb and Kevin Johnson were neck-and-neck too. It wasn’t true.

Fran doesn't operate this way. Once Angeli was signed he was the guy. He didn't come here to sit.

I respectfully disagree. If we take Fran at his word, DART is a meaningful acronym; meant to be followed in more than college football. If Angeli "was the guy" as soon as he signed, Fran's word to Collins, the other coaches, and even the fans about their proving themselves through camp competition was bogus.
That's not Fran IMHO.
I have no doubt this QB1 choice was made during every practice and coaching review since fall camp started. I'm certain the coaches were Disciplined about it as well as Relentless. They made the Tough decision and will be Accountable for it.

Carlson just the coaches were impressed by it. All I've been saying is that I expected it was a consideration. But just one of many. Obviously his play in training camp had to have been the top criteria.

Both guys seem pretty even through interviews and practice clips this spring.

He was admitted into Notre dame and he looked exceptionally composed in a playoff game.

Doesn't operate in the way that philosophically believes you get better performance from your QB by yanking guys around.

Pena seemed to transfer because he wasn't confident in Collins. Rickie is a toolsy guy and hopefully he can help us this year and in the future. A lot of his recruiting hype was his athletic ability. It takes time to turn playmaking ability into a QB that wins every down for you.

Angeli is a veteran QB who has experience in big games. I think he gives you the best chance to win against Tennessee. He should be a poor man's version of Kyle McCord.

With Angeli, little has to change from last year and they can still run a pro style offense. With Collins, you have to adjust the offense to lean on his dual threat ability. You can only have one starting QB. It sucks to work hard and have to hold the clipboard but that's the deal. Maybe we'll find some packages for Collins as the year goes on in order to get him on the field. Last year I don't remember ever seeing a backup QB play, although some of that is we'd always let the other team back in the game at the end.

Very interesting stat in here. Last season for App State per PFF, Joey Aguilar had 24 turnover worthy plays. For Angeli, in 91 total dropbacks he has ZERO turnover worthy plays.

That could be the key vs. Tennessee

This reads like you’re looking for a controversy. It wouldn’t be the first time a QB competition was smoke and mirrors. I always thought Angeli was the favorite based on his history. There’s no grand conspiracy here.

I doubt you see a quick hook. If you saw Pitt last year, it’s probably not going to happen. You learn from mistakes and Kyle got better after the Pitt game.

Oh I agree, but practice formalized what they thought of Angeli coming in. Collins hold on the job was tenuous at best the minute Angeli signed.

Agree. Fran and staff picked the qb they felt gave them the best opportunity to win. Fran hates losing. The man hates losing so much he does not wash (winners get washed) He is going with the best players that will help the team win.

He ran for a total of 100 yards in 3 years of high school ball (based on his MaxPreps stats). 37 rushing yards during brief stints as a QB at LSU ... he is not a dual threat QB for the love of God. He may be athletic but he is not a guy who runs the football. And quite frankly i don't care what some recruitnick calls him or labels him ... a guy who rain for -10 yards as a junior isn't dual threat.

I can emphatically say I have no idea what to expect in game 1. We could surprise in a very good way, or the narrative could be "same old Syracuse is back". I at least think the offense will make some strides as the season progresses because there is talent at the skill positions - just don't know how the OL will hold up. The defense, however, is what scares me because we have nothing to suggest that ERob is the right man for this job so far, and the talent on that side is a lot more unproven.

A couple of things. Angeli is a really gifted passer. He's VERY good, he's experienced, and the staff sees him as a guy who can emulate a lot of what McCord brought to the table last year.

Keep in mind that when we landed Kyle from OSU, a lot of people were talking about him being a game manager [similar to Angeli this year], who might "suffer" from not having the same level of talent. Very few people thought he was going to star; a preseason poll rated him as something like the 10th best QB starter in the ACC. Fast forward, and he led the nation in passing yards / receptions / etc.

Can Angeli produce 75% of the same? Time will tell. But this seems bigger than just the Tennessee game.

Arm strength is overrated. How many 30+ yard passes are you going to complete during the course of a game [and I'm talking about downfield, not short receptions that turn into long YAC chunks]?

And nothing against Collins. It sounds like this battle went right down to the wire. He is one snap away, and could yet see the field.
