Ranking this team against other SU squads: POLL

Where do you predict this team will rank among all SU teams, when all is said and done?

I don't even put this team in the top 20 yet, they have a lot to prove.

People don't like to remember the 90-91 team because of the absolute melt down in the post season, but that was a pretty darn good team as well.

Owens 23.2 ppg
Johnson 19.4 ppg
Ellis
Autry
Edwards

Mcrae
Hopkins
unreal team. Richmond

Agree with those who say it's too early. We need to play some good competition.

unreal team. Richmond

And with a decent showing in the BET that year (we got bounced by Nova in the first round), we probably get a #1 seed and don't even have to play Richmond.

How about the 2005 team? Not the actual 2005 team, of course, but a 2005 team with Melo as a junior.

Florida will be our first major measuring stick game.

The team may get better or worse as the season progresses, but this game will be the first bona fide indicator of where we are right now.

This team has high potential, but it's a long season, with a media storm already going on, and a squad that we are trusting has gained leadership since last year. Not trying to be a debbie downer, but lets at least wait til midway through conference play. NOW, if everyone comes back next year, then we can talk. Because our couple question marks would probably be answered by then, and that team could make a run at the '87/'03 squads.

Not even close to the Andy/Wes team, any team with DC PR the 2003 team. Might beat 1996 team.

1. 2002/3 Melo, NCAA Championship team
2. 2009/10 AO/Wes/Andy senior year
3. THIS YEAR
4. 1986/7 DC frosh year, NCAA Runner-up
5. 1989/90 DC senior year
6. 1988/9 Sherm's senior year
7. 1995/6 John Wallace's senior year, NCAA Runner-up
8. 1999/2000 Etan Blackwell Hart senior year.

1989 Team had the best talent 1-7 we have ever had. It just so happens that there were dozens of teams that were loaded as well (including the 1989 Illinois team we lost to that would probably go 30-1 if they played in the Big 10 today) as players stuck around for more than 1-2 years.

Just because we didnt make the FF that year doesnt mean that this team wasnt great. That team would have easily beaten the 2009 team. Not even debatable.

'89 team was filthy. They averaged 103 pts per game throughout their non-conf schedule, and 90 pts overall all year.

Could you imagine the frontcourt matchup vs. this 2011 team? Coleman/Owens vs. Melo/Xmas.

Thank you. My point exactly

Lost both first round games in BET and to lowly Richmond in NCAA. 2 top players and the rest were average. The are nowhere in the discussion.

If they won it all this year, I would put them at #3. #1 would be '03 and #2 would be '96. Both those teams were not highly ranked/regarded early in the season and just kept gelling as the season went on and into the post season with exhilatering tourney runs...

My biggest problem with the '89 team was their 10-6 big east record. I know they had some injuries and some close losses, but they still gotta take a hit for that conference record. From '86-'91, when they had powerhouse teams every year, the '89 team had the worst conference record of all those teams.

And i dont think its fair to penalize the 2010 team by saying the competition wasnt as good as it was in '89. Maybe so, but the big east was still pretty damn good in 2010 (8 tourny teams, 11 nba draft picks), and we steamrolled through it. WHen that team was clicking (carolina at msg, gtown and nova at the dome, gonzaga in the tourny even without ao) they could go toe to toe with any cuse team in history, no doubt in my mind. They were THAT good.

'89 team margin of victory throughout their non-conference schedule was 24 points.

2010? 26 points

Yeah but the 89 teams coach doesn' t have nearly as much experience as the 2010 teams coach. The 2010 team coach probably has forgot more basketball then the 89 teams coach ever learned.

Then again the 2010 teams coach was so stubborn he wouldn't play any man to man. Just ask BlueCurtain. One loss to a Division two team and he becomes as stubborn as a goat.
:D

Team finished the regular season 26-4, ranked 6th in the country. They were 8-2 against ranked opponents. Was one of only two SU teams ever to win the regular season BE championship outright. But for the first round loss to Nova in the BET they very likely would have been only our second (at the time) #1 seed. Had two of our top 15 all time career point scorers.

They didn't perform in the post season no question, but if the answer to this question were based on post season performance it would be a very easy ranking to conduct.
