Rick Pitino

Schadenfreude is lame and embarrassing when your own team is a laughingstock.

I gotta disagree there. Reveling in somebody else’s misfortune from on high is considerably more embarrassing than from the gutter.

I also disagree with the premise that you can’t criticize someone/something because the thing you like is worse or as bad. Like, if you have an ugly wife, you can still take note of somebody else’s ugly wife. Your wife’s ugliness doesn’t make the other one less ugly.

I was at the other end of this. I loved the way they played. Relentless for 40. Offensively limited but damn…wanted them to beat Calipari.
Yeah. Calipari has always struck me as a used car salesman. Pitino may have some sleaze in him, but when he talks, I feel like he's being genuine, and I love the intensity his teams have.

I recall Pitino’s L’ville teams sometimes underperforming in the tournament because of the way he coaches defense. It works during the regular season very well when refs are more likely to swallow their whistles. The ‘foul constantly because they can’t call them all’ strategy doesn’t work as well with the way games are officiated in the NCAAT.

Also, holy crap St. John’s is bad at putting the ball in the hoop.
Eh, you might want to fact check this. I think he was upset by forehead st once but otherwise had 6 elite 8s, 3 final fours.

Ummm. Shocked that anyone would differentiate their personalities. It was like twins coaching against themselves today. Calipari has always just been younger Pitino in my eyes.

Yes and Pitino never let it go that he helped Calipari get his first head coaching job at UMass. Pitino had the big $ by 1988 having coached at Boston U, been an asst’t for the Knick’s, HC at Providence and was then currently the Knicks head coach when Calipari was a candidate vying for the UMass job. Pitino was a UMass grad and a booster, who was called by the AD etc to get his thoughts on Calipari. Pitino claims he even gave some $ to help get Calipari for UMass. They don’t get along obviously and Pitino jokes that the story irks Calipari - so here he was repeating to a tv reporter in 2025 when I heard it. I think of them as ying and yang. Bet there are some great stories behind the scenes when Calipari was at Kentucky and Pitino was at Louisville.

Fair. I didn’t mean to imply they were 2/10 equivalent upsets.

I guess this might rephrase my statement as, Pitino’s L’ville teams didn’t beat baseline expectations often in the NCAAT (due to play style incompatibility with the officiating, as I recall it). He finished the tournament within a game in either direction of what you’d expect all but 3 times; 2 good, 1 bad. He had 2 F4’s as a 4 and and a 2nd round loss as a 2. Maybe that says something or maybe it doesn’t. Idk, honestly,

Because I hate Rick Pitino and St Johns with a passion and love seeing them lose? Idk figured most SU fans would feel the same way
Wow, I thought I was the only one who hated this jerk. He’s been canonized on this board as the 2nd coming. Glad to have you on this side.

It's actually insane. He's probably my most hated coach ever. And people desperately wanted him here.

Some must forget Louisville fired him. Like do they realize how awful of a guy you must be to actually have a place like Lville feel like they have to axe you!?

The St, John’s hype train went from cute to insufferable pretty quickly. I’m glad they’re out and I hope Rick is miserable.
Just shocked anyone here would pull for them. It’s a step below rooting for UConn or Georgetown in my eyes. Basically like pulling for Nova. I want every other NE school to lose.

Old habits die hard.

I admit to having a certain nostalgia for the old Big East schools. Particularly since we suck and our current conference is irrelevant these days.

I also never had the disdain for St. John's back in the day that I did for other rivals.

But the Pitino love fest got way out of hand. He's a great college coach and had a good season. Then he lost. /scene.

I always root against Georgetown and UConn…but the other NE Big East schools (Nova, Hall, Providence, St Johns) I’m ok seeing them win. Out of all of them, St John’s is the only one that’s been a very strong program historically with no banner to show for it. Having been there for a long time ourselves - I’d be happy for St John’s if they won an NCAA Championship.

And honestly - rooting against Big East teams as the SEC and Big Ten actively work to destroy college athletics feels less like “old habits die hard” than “refusal to get with the times”. As long as the champ isn’t SEC or Big Ten - I’ll be thrilled.

How about Richard? Would he come to Syracuse?

pitino envy is a thing. He is instant coffee success and we have a cup of cold day old coffee running the program.

Well, Pitino is the only coach who had a good season. So clearly we should only obsessively talk about him and his kid.

It’s remarkable how so many folks here get tunnel vision about guys they know. Pitino coached here FIVE DECADES ago.

I can see that. I suppose it's just my perception. Calipari has always rubbed me the wrong way in a way Pitino hasn't. Calipari feels like a poser to me.

Are you related to Rick? Not sure why you're glazing an adulterous homewrecker so hard.

He's had his 45 seconds on this board. Time to move on.
Someone remind me. How many times has JB been married? How many sanctions? Anyone know who introduced him to Julie?
