The idea of giving this program something to chew on by scheduling some OOC teams before getting into our ACC opponents I believe is a great idea. Give the new recruits who become starters a chance to jell, find us some experience after camp and to know who has your back, find out who is reliable and who you go to when passing short and long, get to know each other as a team both on offense and defense, play some teams who are beatable to get the experience playing together.

JB has had every year cupcakes since I can remember because it works - although those teams are getting tougher now. JB will tell you that it takes a year, (when we played in the BE except for a one and done player like Carmelo), for a very good freshman player(s) to get their legs and understand what basketball is at this level - even more now that we are in the best conference there is.

IMO the same thing could be said of SS. Build the program up in the future with a schedule like: Colgate, Army, Stony Brook and Akron. All but one are NYS schools. So, we get exposure with these teams coming into the Dome and give the team confidence. Should we start of with this kind of schedule and go 4-0 it would be a hell of a lot better than having LSU in and possibly having the crowd watch another defeat of SU.

Instead of having RI, WF, CM, and LSU start with the schedule above or some other mix that would achieve a goal of beating teams and having a record we are proud of. We cannot start out playing a Ohio State or LSU just to see the team in the Dome. That kind of schedule looks good but cheats the team. Start slowly and build over the years to come. 4-0 is better than 1-3 which could be a possibility. It would go a long way in seeing this teams player and program development.

No way we can schedule both Colgate and Stony Brook, most importantly because we need wins that will actually count toward bowl eligibility and only one of those would.

I think our current schedule to start off the year is fine. Three very winnable games (SHOULD be 3-0), and then a big challenge in LSU. I'm anticipating 3-1 if things go as I expect, and I think most of us would be very happy with 3-1 to start the year.

If you think that Rhode Island, Wake Forrest and Central Michigan are too tough, we might as well pack the whole thing in.

Agreed. Honestly, Army/Akron would probably be tougher than Wake most years.

If we start 1-3 I'm probably donating my tickets to the children's hospital or something. We were horrible last year and still pasted CMU at their house 40-3!! We also beat Wake on the road 30-7. Even a 2-2 start will give me serious heartburn and indigestion.

Honestly, I dont think they could've done better with the schedule this year. I think it ramps up nicely. The only change I would make is to flip flop WF and CMU. Follow that with a marquee non-conference like LSU in the dome (then followed by USF, by all accounts a very winnable game) and you've got a hell of a slate to propel you into conference play.

This type of schedule should be the outline for any given season IMO.

I'm on board with this non-conference schedule... is what I would say if we were having this conversation in 1940 and Army was a national power. The Dome would be a morgue for all those games.

We need a showcase non-conference game to be excited about (and to sell recruits on), and LSU is just that. If we're 3-0 going into that game, the atmosphere will be absolutely electric.

I think that's true if we're 3 and 0 and playing well. If we white knuckle our way to 3 and 0 it's hard to say.

I'm expecting we'll start the way we're all hoping, but if we do rally the fans we can't kick them in the nuts again vs LSU. We can lose that one, but it's got to be fun, and we've got to have a reason to believe. Florida State last season was the right kind of loss in that regard.

Maybe we'll get steamrolled, maybe we'll win, I have no idea. But if someone doesn't at least want the opportunity to play a national power on their home field in front of a packed crowd, I don't understand why they even like sports to begin with.

I agree with that.

Why would you do that to those poor kids?

I would love to play 2 NY teams every year. With one of Cornell/Stony Brook/Colgate and Buffalo/Army (any other NY D1 teams?) every other year. Another MAC/AAC-level team and one bigger name.

If there is a 4-0 start it will be significantly more exciting than any 20-0 start we've had or could have in basketball.

I thought this was going to be a post about 1991.

That was a fun year in the student section.

I'm all for scheduling what should be 4 OOC wins, at this point. In the "new Big East" after Miami and VT left, I can see why we had to schedule major conference OOC opponents because we had almost nobody(WVU the exception) the fans cared about on the conference schedule.

But now we've got FSU and Clemson every year. At some point we'll get Miami or VT again. We need W's. As long as they count towards a bowl, I don't care who they're against.

Losing a hard fought 20-17 game to a Minnesota or Penn State does nothing for us. And let's face it...we almost NEVER win these games...PSU, ND, USC, Minnesota, Northwestern, etc. Our record in these games is horrendous the last decade.

I am perfectly fine following the Baylor formula.

Other than our ACC schedule we should only play that teams that we can beat and offer some recruiting exposure. I like playing Buffalo as the Western part of the state produces some decent talent and we would also get exposure in Rochester. I like playing Army because it provides downstate and National exposure would most likely be TV. I think that playing Maine or RI is also a good bet as again we get New England exposure.
