Recruiting 2023-2025

Yup I know G-town is and some others have a few players getting them I believe Hopkins, Maryland UNC etc. I do think SU expanding NIL opps for additional lax guys make sense and the NIL fund they announced yesterday should help with that. Every little bit helps though, we've got a lax player coming to our tailgate via an NIL opportunity next Sat, hope more groups take advantage.
I agree, every bit helps. The new set up is sweet. Very easy to donate.

Put me in the concerned camp. With this staff, what are the roles for the recruiting? Who is putting in the time and who has the ability to extend an offer and close? Mediocre classes simply unacceptable given the competition in the ACC.

Have to agree with Jeremy here.. it’s been a slow go this year.. but Hocker committing last night still leaves 16 5 star kids still available, and only one in the top 10 has committed so far..

Khalif Hocker is a really nice pick-up for OSU. They haven't had a 5-star attackman since Jack Myers. They already have Finley Watson committed.
OSU does a very good job recruiting black players and families. They compare their roster with other schools rosters. They say things like “we have more players that look like you here”. Check out their IG. There isn’t a post the doesn’t showcase their target audience. Smart

Plus they get the $5900 and other scholarships that are only given to minority (black) athletes.

hocker was never going anywhere other than ohio state. grew up a big buckeye fan in ohio

Syracuse needs impact players now I see Gait relying more on the portal then recruiting. Jeremy is 100 percent correct 5 star recruits aren’t going to line up for Syracuse until they start going deeper into the playoffs. I do disagree that Petro was Syracuse’s best recruiter while he was committed to it his recruiting at Hopkins was his demise and I didn’t see a huge improvement while he was here

Probably true but still doesn’t take away the fact that OSU does a great job recruiting black players. They currently have 10 black players on the roster and they use that when recruiting. I am close with a player that is there that made his decision based on them selling the fact that they have more players that look like him. Sounded crazy to me that he made his college decision based on the color of the players on the roster but he did.

cuse has a good shot at one of those two. the other is close to making his decision and it's not cuse. i will let you try to figure out which is which ;)
Gosh darnit

I'm going with Raio to Cuse. Merrill to ND.

I think a lot of St. Anthony's kids go to Duke (O'Neil, Danenza McAdory) while a lot of Chaminade kids go to Notre Dame (they currently have 8 alums on the roster). I pegged Merrill to Duke when this list initially came out.

Same, thought Duke was the likely destination

The more big picture concern I have is the percentage of kids coming out of the prep school world. There is likely to be more kids/families with a focus on top academics coming from those schools. It is already a disadvantage that about 90% of the schools we compete with are higher rated academic places, with a good deal being in the very top tier in the country. Does that get worse with seemingly half the name considered elite coming from a prep school and the number only going up?

I think our recent inroads on LI and MIAA will continue to see results. They still populate the top 50 and just 3 or 4 classes ago names from there were few and far between for us. I also have faith in Odierna as a recruiter in LI at the very least.

Good point - the lacrosse landscape has changed a lot over the past 20 or so years. When I first started following things it seemed like all the talent came out of CNY, Long Island or Baltimore (i.e MIAA schools). Syracuse could obviously draw on public school kids from nearby and on the Island. Now it seems like the New England prep schools, in addition to schools like Lawrenceville, Culver and the Hill Academy are really taking over. It's striking that a lot of the CNY kids (I use that term loosely) that are on these recruiting lists now play at prep schools (Kittleberger, Reynolds, Gaylord, Rodriguez, and Swinney).

Even on Long Island it seems like a majority of the talent ends up either at St Anthony's or Chaminade. Remember that stacked Farmingdale team with Danowski and Panarelli? Could that happen now a days? Sometimes I wonder if it's better for kids to be on a team that might help spotlight them a little more, rather than one of these semi-college teams that run second midfield lines and have their own SSDMs.

Syracuse has still be able to draw from those schools, and I give them a ton of credit for changing up their recruiting over the years. Finding kids from Florida (Salcido and IMG, though that didn't work out), getting a foothold back in Long Island, going back up into Canada after years away. Also, just because a kid does go to a prep school doesn't automatically mean they are bound for an Ivy League school. Deere, Kol, Anderson, O'Farrell, Dwan, Hottle, Scott, the St John's kids, etc all came/are coming to SU. The coaches just have to work a little harder than they did back in the day.

Really good points section 3 lacrosse has regressed badly and even worse since Covid there a lot of programs that no longer have JV squads because enrollment is down so badly. I don’t remember Syracuse ever getting away from recruiting Canada just most came from Six Nations or via OCC

I think this is all largely accurate and I have been saying the same for awhile (focus on the second tier prep schools and public where the students are far less likely to gain admission to the Ivys, Duke, ND, UVA, etc.) It goes even deeper than rankings though. I think most of these kids are from a culture where the ultimate payoff is to land in high income jobs (i.e., investment banking, consulting, etc.). Syracuse is not as well situated to offer those kinds of opportunities. I think its why we continue to do better on the women's side for recruiting. This may be an antiquated proposition, but I think young ladies are less focused on these types of careers and therefore strength of academic program in those areas is less of a consideration.

FYI, a lax guy on twitter last night was commenting that a major 5 star had switched commits to a "top School" but would not divulge additional details. I have no heard anything about Anderson switching but something to keep an eye on.

The tweet in question -
