Recruiting 2023-2025

The timing of these posts, two minutes apart, is priceless.

Think you have my posts mixed up, your likely talking about the one where I mentioned other top teams.

No, that’s the one I meant. I read your post as, everything is fine, it’s early, give the coaches a chance. I was like, yeah, he’s right. Let’s let this play out. Then bam, UVA nabs a 5-star.

Not a jab at you, Jeremy, by any stretch. I was uplifted by your optimism. And then, boom, frickin’ Virginia strikes again.
And that’s all I’m saying. I’m not totally pressing the panic button. But while we sit here and bring in 3 stars. The teams we play every year in the ACC bring in high 4’s and 5’s. Can’t expect to compete without the talent. It’s just a matter of fact

LOL true but that's what UVA does unfortunately they Duke were bound to start getting some big time players or at least highly rated ones. Just have to get our share as well and hopefully we get some good news over the next week or so.

Talent is always a concern but SU has brought in a ton of 4 stars the last 2 classes, your concern would have more validity if it was Oct 12th and SU had nothing but 3 stars. Even the all mighty Duke and UVA have classes with 3 star players.

And then there’s that.

Good pickup for Duke. NJ has seen a fair amount of high end commits so far with zero going to Rutty. That transfer strategy is definitely not working with HS recruits.

Have to keep some expectations, SU landed one 5 star last year in Anderson and lost their best recruiter in Petro a month and half before the recruiting season opened. The 2022 class was an outlier, SU isn't gonna recruit like that regularly until they get back to the post-season and make a deep run. Gotta give the staff more then 12 days before we can make a determination on where we are at.
I am not expecting much of a dip at all on at least the offensive end due to Petro leaving. Think we will get our guys there eventually. We have a distinct style on offense and I think guys will want to be a part of that. We were certainly able to land a bunch of quality offensive guys through the portal these past two seasons and I don't think Petro is the main reason for that. Give it time and Im sure we get some top names, or at least the right ones (once again not a lot of canadians in the top 50).

The more big picture concern I have is the percentage of kids coming out of the prep school world. There is likely to be more kids/families with a focus on top academics coming from those schools. It is already a disadvantage that about 90% of the schools we compete with are higher rated academic places, with a good deal being in the very top tier in the country. Does that get worse with seemingly half the name considered elite coming from a prep school and the number only going up?

I think our recent inroads on LI and MIAA will continue to see results. They still populate the top 50 and just 3 or 4 classes ago names from there were few and far between for us. I also have faith in Odierna as a recruiter in LI at the very least.

There were 5 and 4 star MIAA and LI recruits on campus this past weekend. Everything is going to be fine.

Right now something like 35 of the top 50 players are uncommitted. There are over 100 five and four star recruits that are currently uncommitted. Like Jeremey said, this story is far from being finished. I think the last two years are what we should hope for/expect - two top 50 players per class (Deere, Scott and Anderson McIntee), rounded out with a bunch of four star players. Right now that end result is still in the cards.

Not entirely sure why D'Agonstino wasn't ranked more highly, as being a starter as a sophomore for a team like Chaminade is pretty impressive. I think the LSMs and defenders that Ty and the NLF guys focus on are usually the guys who are over 6'2 and run like the wind. D'Agonstino is only 5'10 so I'm guessing that has something to do with it. I thought his tape was pretty impressive, very physical and seem to have a bull dog mentality. I'll take players like any day.

Number 30 goals is Josh Marcus, his dad I believed played for Hopkins. Figured he would end up there in this process. Ranked higher by NLF.

Probably both viewpoints are true - it's not time to panic...but it's also not going well.

Yes, Duke just got their first recruit, but everyone realized 8 of the top 10 kids were considering them. And ND is no doubt going to surge with some recruits that historically would not want to go that far from home.

The selling message right now for SU is probably tough. 2-10 in conference the past two years, so they are selling (1) history of Cuse and (2) be part of restoring glory. That may resonate with some recruits, but it's gotta be tough. And then, as mentioned, the academics compared to the rest of the ACC are not overly favoarable.

Reality is that over 25% of the ideal targets (top 50) are committed. So while that means there are still plenty of targets left, the early signals are that they have their eyes elsewhere. And don't discount that these things tend to operate on inertia - kids tend to want to play with other great kids.

It just may have to be the case that they need to demonstrate on-field success before recruits put them in the consideration set. That means relying on the transfer portal for the next couple years to supplement recruiting.

But it could turn in a moment.

If we want to start competing with UVA, Duke and ND for recruits we better raise our NIL foot print. The great 22 class has one guy getting endorsements. Not saying he isn’t worthy but others are too. That goes for the other sports too.

I believe SU has multiple current players receiving NIL payments. Joey is the only one getting multiple or I think any endorsement deals but I am not aware of multiple players on Maryland or UVA or Duke or any of the Ivy's with endorsement deals.

It’s an opportunity to separate us from the others.

Agreed but it's gonna be hard to convince most businesses to go with a lax guy outside of the Spallinas, O'Neils etc. There just not that well known to the general public. NIL deals themselves are more likely

To add some are getting the $5900 payment from the school. Many BIG10 rosters are getting the funds.

I dunno - I think the experience from college football is not necessarily positive - think A&M. They have in essence bought their team, and by all accounts, the locker room has deteriorated and performance similarly has shown ill effects. But Colorado may be the counter example.

However, I worry about players only coming because of an NIL deal. It just doesn't seem durable, especially for the lax community that tends to be relatively financially stable.

Not sure if they are getting endorsement or NIL money for this, but that’s Mason Kohn, Jake Spallina and John Mullen with Joey Spallina (and TD Ierlan, a Gait Lacrosse endorsed athlete). Might just be a one time photo shoot or something but curious if Gait Lax is sponsoring more athletes.

Yup I know G-town is and some others have a few players getting them I believe Hopkins, Maryland UNC etc. I do think SU expanding NIL opps for additional lax guys make sense and the NIL fund they announced yesterday should help with that. Every little bit helps though, we've got a lax player coming to our tailgate via an NIL opportunity next Sat, hope more groups take advantage.
