Recruiting Updates

From what I understand it's looking like this class could round out with either 2 bigs or 1 big and a wing. Hmmmmmm.

2 questions: first come first served?
Any chance we get a Greek center piece?

I have to assume if Jones wants to come, they'd take him.

But with Govan and the Greek Peak II in play, it will be interesting to see which big [or bigs] end up being the ones in contention when the merry go round stops.

Good to see you back. By the way, no more self-bans no matter what you say!

We are only taking one more.

Anyone else here think a '15 class of Franklin Howard, Malachi, Derrick Jones, Lydon and Georgios Papagiannis would be our best yet? I know, dreaming. But still. Maybe we sacrifice a little bit on size and possibly defense at forward, but a ton of scoring options.

Forget Jones not going to happen

I'm confident that we'll get either Bryant or Diagne. Too many question marks on the Greek kid to have a good read on him.

Staff has inquired in on other wings besides Jones. McCullough is coming in with a one and done mindset so the expectations is that the open room will come from there.

I'd much rather Jones than any other option.

Sacrifice size?!? Defence? Lydon's a 6'8" leaper, Jones will likely end up a 6'7"+ leaper. We've always done better with laterally mobile forwards that can amoeba the zone, score and ideally play "point forward". Wes was a tremendous weak side shotblocker and ideal for the zone. Melo and Hak were arguably our best tandem ever (Coleman and Owens on line 1, sir...) and neither was a Thickburger (TM).

All this said, I'm on my 7th (TM) bier (750s of Gulden Draak and Trois Pistoles) in midst of analysis of ASOIAF show v. books so for all I know I might start referencing 80s songs. Relevance be darn darn darn darn darny darn darned.

Curious question. Have you seen Jones play in a full game yet? You seem to be really infatuated with him which there is nothing wrong with but I'm just curious to know if you've really evaluated him fully or just getting hyped off his highlight vids?

I've watched full games of Jones, Bryant, Silva and Howard for this class.

Came to my own conclusion that, besides Howard, Jones could make the biggest impact at Syracuse do to his athleticism and energy. You can't teach above the rim play and athleticism like that. You can however develop a jump shot and zone defense potential.

Edit: Clearly I'm not the basketball/recruiting IQ you are. Just putting out what I feel and studying opposing arguments/criticism.

Agree. We need to land some beef inside. Until Jones can prove that he can knock down an outside shot consistently, I'll pass on a player whose best offensive move is a tip slam.

Coleman and Obokoh should be pretty beefy by 2015

 I stand corrected. :D

I hear that and I respect your opinion.

Plenty of worries about Coleman's knees and Obokoh is a 3 star center that is very raw with limited experience. Not sure that you want to depend on him having a heavy role holding the middle down early in his career.

Francis, think I agree that they will take two by what I read on what JB said in reference to CMaC, but what makes you say they will take 2. Hope you are correct, any idea on the other wings they have reached out to. C Bragg? If we get Diagne, Bryant, Govan, or Jones. Any of those two is a rich mans problem. Greek guy would be great but not much noise on that front sure their is a reason.

There is about 8-10 players left in the 2015 class that the staff still has heavy interest in. I think it's inevitable that somebody will leave after next season whether it's going pro or transferring.

I agree OE , would love to take 2 bigs but someone would have to leave to make that happen. I like McCullough but I still don't think he will be a one and done and I can't see anyone else on roster going early to NBA. With all that talent on the roster I do think we could see someone transfer due to lack of PT.

If nothing else, the end of this past season should be ample evidence that a talent could move on to the NBA.

In my mind, I see the team having 3 players next year who, with the right season, could have the ability to move on. McCullough, Roberson & KJ2.
McCullough, from the beginning, has been thought of as a 1 and done type player. Roberson as a 2-3 year player, and KJ2 as 2-3 year player.
In the right situation, just like this year with Ennis, SU could be seeing more openings.

I truly believe that JB was caught, at least a little bit, off guard by Ennis leaving. I doubt he will ever be caught off guard again. He will want to keep recruiting kids, in the event that more players could leave early.

I am of the opinion that in this era, you take how long you expect a kid to stay, and subtract a year, and that is their likely time frame at SU. There is nothing wrong with that, as long as you make appropriate plans. This is why I am so high on the Lydon commit, because I truly think he will ultimately have a greater impact on the success of SU than McCullough (for example) is likely to have.

This is what happens when super smart people drink too much. It's not a pretty sight. :)

Alcohol, leveling the playing field for thousands of years.
