Recruiting

. . . . the timing being good for SU football right now. But I'm not sure of two things:

-- Playing freshmen equates to this team being any better than it is

or

-- the notion that a win makes a huge difference in our overall recruiting efforts. I mean, we just signed our "best class" (I'm fairly skeptical of really judging this today, but it at least seems like our best class), much of which signed on during our 5-7 season. We're off to a very solid start this year and that's in the wake of the dismal season and now an 0-2 start.

... DM is pretty likely to be here a year, maybe even two years from today and, in that view, he's better off redshirting.
I agree with your point that BC and Pitt can rebound pretty quickly. Pitt will benefit from the woes of PSU in recruiting Pennsylvania -- likely more than we will. BC and Pitt have the same ACC advantage that we do versus UConn & Rutgers. Sure, we should be on the upswing, but the impact on recruiting will be incremental and the coaches still need to build the positive buzz about our program (negatives about rivals won't close many deals).
We have a solid start to recruiting this year -- but candidly, we still need a strong close in November - January.
As to playing true freshmen, haven't seen anyone suggest why "seize the moment" means that Marrone should do something different (in going after wins, or deciding which frosh should play, focus on recruiting better prospects) than he would always do. Except for that suggestion about using negatives about rivals -- fine, but kids already know about the ACC, PSU and Pitt's slow start.

exactlyand I posed this on the recruiting board once but there are 3 Penn State commits (and 2 lineman) that we should be pressing hard right now to flip - at least try to coax visits out them. If we're not trying with these kids because of the Marrone/Obrien relationship then as a fan I'd be pissed about that.

Brandon Bell LB – Mays Landing, NJ
Brendan Mahon OL – Randolph, NJ
Andrew Nelson OL – Hershey, PA
I agree that the O-line needs fortification. As it stands,if I can go from memory only we have Foy, Trudo, Emerich, Robinson,Palmer and Knapp coming back I gotta be forgetting someone in there but its still not enough in numbers or quality. I don't care if its a JC kid of worth. Give him two and recruit some more. Oh yeah Hickey for one more. He has been around so long ,I think of him as a senior.:p

Pugh is still eligible for another year, as is Macky.
