Red's Postgame Presser | Colgate

Somebody had to say something to him right after the game because he started that presser aggressive. I'm also not sure I'm bragging up our rebounding numbers against a team with one big guy who got one of the more least friendly whistles I've seen in a while (if the officiated our big like that this board would have been on fire).

As I commented in another post - Texas is a huge game - for Red, the team and our fanbase - we cannot afford another 20 plus point non-competitive beat down.
I'm being serious with this comment. I'd sign up for a 10pt loss right now. Unless what I'm seeing is wrong we might get destroyed.

Not that I want Red to fail, but if he truly isn't good enough for the job, it might as well start to unravel now.

I fear the Texas and Tennessee games will be very lopsided affairs.

Lampkin probably has a bad back because he’s carrying too much weight.
As a bigger dude, I don't think people understand how little 40lbs looks like but the effect it has on your back and knees. I hope this isn't an all season thing but if it's a weight thing, probably will be...

Red came into the presser salty. I wonder what caused that. I'm also not sure why getting more possessions was what he led with.
I'd love to know why an athlete like JJ is such a poor defender. He still is a disaster defending against screens. Guys blow by him. Same with Carlos who came with a good defensive reputation as the defender of the year last year in his conference.
Also in the exhibition games we didn't see guys jogging back on defense like we did last night. How Red addresses that issue will say a great deal about him as a coach.
Is JJ that athletic? I don't think I've ever seen him on the floor and was wowed by his athleticism. I can't imagine he's in the upper half of athleticism for guards in the ACC. I don't know what you guys are watching.

But I mean come on, there are certainly less athletic guards than him all around the country who play serviceable or even good defense - his woes on that end of the floor aren't about athleticism

All I'm saying is that i think he's probably has average athleticism at best and a poor reaction time and this is the result.

This was warned ALL OFFSEASON as people talked about how great it’d be that we wouldn’t have an unsized center and a guy who wouldn’t get backed down.

He’s going to be put in the spin cycle in every acc game

Bingo. Over and over we heard this even though it was clear as day he was going to be a liability on the defensive end.

And, while he's good on O, he's not an efficiency machine, nor is he capable of playing 37mpg if we really need him out there.

He's an ok player. Does some stuff well. Has a lot of limitations.

But you are right, they are going to put him into action morning, noon and night.

I agree to some extent but like these guys have been playing basketball for their entire life at the highest level. I think there’s some thought that they should know how to play man to man defense at this stage of their life. Eddie was spinning around in circles with screens yesterday. Like what is that. Should there have been clear messaging about going above screens ? Sure but we don’t know that Red didn’t convey that. We’ll see on Saturday what product shows up on defensive end. If there’s anything I’m “mad” at it was the softness of everything. You gonna let someone drive by you then whatever, but foul them. Make them earn it. Show you care. And I didn’t see that once yesterday from JJ and a few others.
Eddie wants to be a guard so bad.

M2M isn't a monolith.

To your point, I don't know where the blame pie lies in terms of coaching vs players. But I can say, Eddie was never going to be a defensive force. Ever.

The blow bys and the lack of rotations are a major concern because that is extremely basic in any version of M2M.

However, there were guys that when there was a screen where we had both guys go with the ball handler and no one stayed with the roll guy and it was not due to a blitz and there was no rotating coverage on the roll man. It was an error. Now, that may be communication mishap, forgetting the D strat or it may just be bad coaching.

I don't know. But it is a mess and Red need to put the fear or god into them and make sure guys that play, play D with effort and a moderate level of competence. And if he can't even do that, that's a much bigger issue.

Or it gets progressively worse.
Or maybe it gets better. And when it gets better, he gets his conditioning to a level where he is able to play the type of minutes he did last season.

Maybe, but I'd never bet against a bad back.

Let's face it. We don't have one guy that would start for a team that is top 5 in the ACC.
So revise expectations accordingly.

Through 2 games we're ranked in the top 25% of teams in offensive rebounding percentage and 14th overall in defensive rebounding percentage. Some regression is expected against the bigger teams we'll face in Brooklyn but so far it's been a strength, as has our ability to hold onto the ball and not get shots blocked, both traits that last year's team had as well. If one of your criticisms of this team is the lack of "identity", there it is - Shot volume.

We all know the defense isn't where it needs to be, but at least we're getting a shot up nearly every time down, often multiple. If you can't find positives you're just setting yourself up for a miserable four months.
I thought we looked a little bit like the sort annoying "dump and chase" Georgetown and Pitt teams from the late Big East years... Minus the tenacious defense, of course.

Davis and Lampkin seem to be a lot to handle on the boards... For mid major programs.

One benefit of Texas is that Lampkin will have about 50 pounds on their biggest player. Then they have a bunch of 6'6" - 6'7" guys playing forward, and a ton of quick guards.

Texas's best player so far has been Tre Johnson, 6'6" guard averaging 25 points on 58% shooting of threes, through 3 games. Carlos guarding a guy that accurate who is 8 inches taller might become hard to watch. Maybe they put Bell on him, and let Carlos guard their waterbug guards.

Our inside rebounding and size advantage might be enough if we can figure out how to slow down dribble penetration to the rim. The results haven't been stellar so far, but with Lampkin we can look forward to physical mismatches almost every single game. Texas is no different.

Might be a spicy take but I think in a game of horrific defending I saw a lot of physicality and speed with Lucas Taylor.

Assuming Johnson torches the starters in wouldn't be opposed to see Taylor get a few mins guarding him.
