I might do that if I'm JB. He's going to be a great player for us, but he's the 5th guard. Lot of potential as a junior once he learns the zone. I think he can be better than Rautins was for SU.

Who was the last kid we redshirted that was healthy?

A few years back we were so thin at guard that walk ons got playing time. Now we go a legit 5-6 deep.

Matt Gorman, because he wasn't going to get minutes during Warrick's senior year. I like the idea (not necessarily for Coony, but for one of the five).

He's likely the 5 guy in a 6 guard cluster, where the 3 of the four guys ahead of him will see significant PT. He might even be 6th behind Mookie. I don't see JB going much beyond 3...4 guys at the most between the two guard spots. That's not his style.

Unless none of the Triche, Scoop, Waiters combo plus Southerland can find range behind the arc, I don't see him playing this year. Just my opinion.

So redshirt? Yeah I think it has to be an option.

NO.
Only if he or the coaches feel its a better move then playing. I felt he had the best three of the scrimmage, but will withold that as a definite until watching again.

I'm sure there are posters out there that know this question ... When was the last time that JB red shirted anyone for anything other than injury? I can't remember (my age I guess). I don't see Cooney red shirting ... he's a 3-point shooter and Scoop and BT can be somewhat erratic a shooting the 3 ... So you need 3-point shooters? Bring in Cooney and Dirty. BTW ... what are we going to call Cooney?

More than you think. I'm not going to be specific, but some of the "injuries" that resulted in redshirts were, lets just say "suspect". It was more about spreading out positions and classes or time to put weight on a kid or let them mature otherwise.

We're not that unlucky. Devo and Rautins injuries were legit - and totally unexpected.

what are we going to call Cooney?

Obviously "The Coon"

Tangent: I love how we can call him "White Hot" as a play on his race, and no one bats an eyelash. How come I could never get away with nicknaming Mookie Jones "Black Hole", which totally fits just as well?

(ba-dum CHING!)

(DISCLAIMER: this is a joke. please try not to get offended.)

Well, because the "black hole" thing, isn't a play on race, it is about how the ball, once trapped in his gravitational pull, cannot escape (until he shoots a three)

No kidding? interesting

Jim Boeheim always said he wished he redshirted Damone Brown. Just saying

Coon dog Cooney?
Tom Cooney, the former LeMoyne's Men's then Women's coach was nicknamed Coon Dog when he coached my friends and I in baseball when we were kids.
