he wasn’t top 150. 4 stars happen but they’re not always elite
True. In fact, DeVito wasn’t even our top target that year. He was a fallback after we missed out on others.

I believe that HCFB is attempting to to develop a team through recruiting High School talent, that takes time…
Can’t be overly reliant on high school. We were scratching our heads wondering why the portal wasn’t used more to bolster the defense and this is the end result.

He was the number 8 pro style quarterback in the nation...and the number #136 ESPN Recruit...

just going to leave this here for all the doubters he was not a top end QB recruit.

If your paying attention, HCFB is using the portal to fill needed players…

Portal is an expensive way to fill gaps and can't fill every hole
ok what is your point, IMO, HCFB is mostly building from high quality High School players…some of them will be as costly as the portal guys; the difference is they are unproven on the college level.

I won’t argue hard about this but espn was a massive outlier Considering rivals had him ~840 and the composite on 247 had him north of 300

Are you sure you arent looking at his transfer recruiting information vs his HS?

It just makes me laugh how quickly we went from "a scholarship is fair compensation" to "you need millions to get top portal or high school QBs."
The only people invested in as sholaship is fair compensation were the people who weren't really compensating.

The “I’m 19 “ explains a lot.

You mean, like the 53-0 loss at GA Tech. ;)
Hah yes. One could argue if Shafer actually kept his defense identity that game instead reworking the entire scheme to some weird 8-2-1 or whatever the heck it was we might have done better

The weather here does suck. The amount of snow Syracuse gets is a turnoff for many recruits. Sure Madison/Ann Arbor are cold but they aren't in snow belts the way that Syracuse is. Ann Arbor gets 1/2 the snow we do...1/2.

Syracuse sucks as a town. There's not much here to lure recruits in terms of city life. Everything is closed by 9:00pm.

We also have clean air, minimal traffic (even during 81 it’s better than many cities regular traffic), four seasons, lakes, parks, golf, snowmobiling, etc. For sporty types it’s a nice place to be. I went to SU and stayed in the city.

Yeah there’s bad stuff living here but everywhere has bad stuff. If that’s all we ever talk about then “recruits won’t come here” is self-fulfilling prophecy.

Stop playing true freshman. This isn't NCAA '26. They are undersized, have not adjusted to the speed of the game at this level, learning to read a completely different level of defense and make adjustments, and are also trying to learn how to be away from home for the first time. They are easily rattled. So either you promise them playing time and don't follow through which will turn off recruits. OR you play them when they aren't ready, ruin their careers and parents won't send them here anymore. Playing true freshman as your preferred strategy is ridiculous and unsustainable. Once you recruit the first one then what do you promise the rest to keep them coming?
In this day and age i think you have to play true freshman and ignore redshirting kids all together. I think the percentage of kids that stay their whole career , including a RS season, is getting lower and lower each season. Find a way to capitalize on what you can as a freshman or another HC is going to reap the rewards of a RS down the road. That would be my philosophy and another reason why i wouldn’t 100% commit to developing HS recruits. There should be a steady mix of player development and 1-2 year portal plugs.

Look at the schools who are having success in this new era out of no where. Indiana, Texas Tech, SMU, Nebraska. Look at some of the programs that relied on developing HS commits that are now struggling. Clemson, Michigan St, Virginia Tech, etc. I think we are starting to have enough data to show what works best.
