How Many Times Will We Punch Rhode Island In The Face

Yes, in fact, that statement is being negative. Especially when placed in a thread about an FCS opponent. Pre-season hasn't even started, much less than the actual season. No one knows how much talent the team has at this point. Any statement otherwise is just opinion.

These would be examples of fact.

Fact: Fans haven't seen any SU players on a field in an organized manner since spring ball.
Fact: A majority of players improve year over year.
Fact: There are quite a few new players.
Fact: We have no idea what new players will bring to the team.
Fact: A whole lot of people on this board complain about SU Football way more than they champion SU Football.
ridiculous.

this whole board is nothing but opinions and the only facts seen are stats.

the quote referenced was was a true motivational ploy which weilded an unprecedented and unparalled sucessful sports height for a bunch of in over their heads athletes and used as a general example of what one may read on here.

if you can only interpret that as a negative, then i suggest you read it again and think or leave it alone.

for again, this place is a bar...and if you are not drinking the whisky, then take your milk and well...

imo: the low end of the totem pole is where you find the rah-rah posters. they really add NOTHING to the discussion as they are constantly trying to cheerlead and not engage in football talk.

Oh, really? How do you figure they love Syracuse sports?

Do they do that by saying the coaches should be fired? Does that show they love SU sports?
Do they do that by complaining that the team isn't talented enough? Does that show they love SU sports?
Do they show that by denigrating student athletes who put their entire lives into improving themselves so they can become better players? Does that show they love SU Sports?

I understand that winning seasons have been few and far between in the last 15 years. And it is understandable to become frustrated as a result. It would even be understandable if they said they had enough and they were done with being a fan. But, it would be disingenuous to regularly & continually make statements along those lines, and still consider themselves a fan.
You are being very judgmental. lol

I don't interpret the quote as negative at all. I instead interpret your use of it in connection with a discussion about an upcoming FCS opponent as negative.

Whether you like it or not, the perception is that you are using the quote to imply that SU football players are not talented enough to beat Rhode Island.
Now, if that is not what you intended, I'm sorry that your post was obtuse enough to imply that. Otherwise, you really were just being negative.

Maybe. Fans are fanatics blinded by their loyalty. You go to games because you want to see the kids do their best and give it their all. You want them to succeed. If they fall short so be it. Life is like that and if some need to denigrate their efforts than they are the ones who are lacking something. I know, I played and came up short and am better for trying 60 years ago. Seems like with every generation since my time there has been an evolving need to knock down this quest for success and for rubbing it in on the underdog for coming up fighting after he has been knocked down.

BS. I engage in real discussions all the time. The thing you haven't figured out is that I'm very forthright and honest and objective about the past. I'm just a hopeless optimist about the future. To me - that's the right balance. When I get annoyed is when people project their own negativity or the teams past as a predictor of the future. Add some sarcasm - and bam - you have the worst kind of "prognosticators" of a very loose version of a "fan."

It's just annoying doing the whole reach around thing 4 weeks before the season. It's not negative at all to say that for a good 8 - 10 years we've done these posts about how superior a team we are, how we are going to smack the out of a bunch of smurfs, and then the game happens and it's like What?

More often than not these games lead to either overall disbelief, disappointment, or a feeling of having no idea where the team is at.

I have a real disdain for the negativity on here that gets dressed up as objective discussion. That's baloney and it gets old quickly. That type of "discussion" spreads like a cancer and stifles optimism. Why would any real fan want to stifle optimism? Is there some sort of satisfaction gained if we fail? I just fired a couple of employees for that very reason. They were talented enough but they were starting to affect the moral of our "team". Maybe there was some truth in their complaints but nobody wants to have it pounded into them constantly. Perhaps some of the posters really see themselves as the light of truth and righteousness when it comes to SU sports, but I think most are just loud, insecure, asshats who see themselves as the Howard Stern of SU sports talk. I'll know what the reality is when it happens but I won't need to harp on it if it isn't all I hoped for. Until then, I prefer blind optimism.

I prefer that if someone posts that such and such freakin sucks OR such and such is freakin awesome...to let them explain why they think so.

And if they're an idiot either way, to be taken to task for it.

:noidea:

So much for the 1st Ammendment.

In the Shafer era the Villanova game is the anomaly. Wagner, Tulane, Central Michigan.

Plus - it's just fun. I was making fun of BC and Addazzio moments after they pummeled us.

I'm cool with that. Millhouse, Scooch, etc do a good job of explaining their positions. I can respect that.

It seems to me that every fan should express their fandom as they see fit - or, to use your term, to find the "balance" that feels right to them. Personally, I would very much prefer to see opinions supported by some type of data or coherent analysis. But, that's just my "balance." The question is, why take others to task because they don't share your "hopeless optimism about the future," or your version of how fandom should be expressed?

I agree that you are mostly objective about the past. But, for me anyway, being hopelessly optimistic about the future (as it pertains to SU football, not a life view) does not make you a better (or worse) fan. It makes you...you.

I've tried to not generalize (though it's tough). I try to hold people that offer negative comments with no analysis accountable. "Tell me why you feel that way" or "explain yourself" ... I can disagree with a well thought out negative opinion. Or sometimes just nod and am like "good point."

The problem with unchecked negativity is that it affects the people here and the fans they come in contact with. And has been stated before - parents of recruits, possible donors, etc.

It appears to me that your stance has more to due with your own proclamation that negativity annoys you and conflicts with your belief that hopeless optimism makes you a better fan. But, if you are also protecting the greater good of other fans, parents of recruits, and possible donors (might have gone a little overboard there), then I guess we are lucky to have you.

I just don't see the rampant, unchecked negativity. Is there some? Absolutely - just like every other fan board that I have ever seen. Is some of that negativity justified by the quality of play over the past 15 years or so? Isn't the answer to that question up to the individual to decide? Is it possible that you are underestimating the ability of the recruits, their parents, and other fans here to see through what is and is not BS?

Look - people can say what they want. If it's just negative (with no facts to back it up) - I'll call it out. Just like those same posters do when I post ra-ra stuff with no facts or reasoned argument.

I don't think I'm a better fan - I just think the team, players, and this site benefit from a "hopeful about the future" attitude rather than "hopeless about the future" attitude. And that's how I post.

As for parents of recruits - no and if it's honest it's not BS. I have DM's from some saying the appreciate the optimism. And they note how negative it can be around here.

I'm not single handedly trying to eradicate negativity from the board. I'm just trying to be myself - which is what I think you've been advocating. Just sarcasm? - lame. Just blasting on the coaches with no facts? - lamer.

I've gained respect for those who post negative arguments that are well thought out.

That's what I don't believe.

And you have changed your stance in things, but regardless this place is more fun since you've stopped lurking.

Thick skin, I think you've slipped maybe 2 or 3x and just hurled a direct insult out.

Your opinion is needed.

I need A beer.....fast.

founders it is. Session ale.

Tomorrow the " GLEN" will put me into tailgating drinking mode...

Got it. Believe it or not, I sincerely hope you continue to post exactly as you have been. I am with Kaiser on this one, your opinion is needed.

Thanks.

I may not say it but I have grown to appreciate near everyone here. I can disagree (and I've stopped posting about uni's) and move on now.

My stance has changed on some things because I've listened to the opposing side of arguments some and get closer to what they are advocating. Like with Millhouse talking about punting too much. I get his argument fully and wish the coaches adopt a more stats based approach. But I think I see Shafer's actions and get them too ("with a offense this bad...").

I've been trying to be less annoying about the negative stuff. A.) it's gotten better and B.) people who are here alot know my take. Of course - the "seasonal" fans haven't stopped by for game day yet :/

a fan is by definition a person who is enthusiastically devoted to Syracuse sports.

All of you on this board can feel free to feel superior to me, or tear this post apart, but what you really need to think about, is how often do you post something positive? How often do you post something negative? If a majority of your posts are of a negative nature, you are not by definition, a fan. You are a troll. Maybe you have become too emotionally involved and you really need to just step away.

This is just before practice starts. It should be the point where hope and faith are highest. I don't see it, and honestly, that is such a sad commentary on the state of this board!

I used to really enjoy this board, but I have to say that I understand why so many people have started stepping away from this particular board.[/QUOT

you have many good posts, but more often than not a personal tone is often judgemental

what annoys me are posters who are sarcastic, judgmental when someone posts an opinion that differs from their own, or the post suggests reality may not be the same koolaid that they drink. i am one of those ---if reality has been negative so be it. i take a wait and see approach after all these years ----if that is negative then so be it . unfortunately, many think they are forthright and are not, arrogant and sometimes hostile would be a better description of some.

Rhode Island. You're named Rhode Island despite the fact that you aren't actually an island. You should feel bad

The state actually was named after an island. The mainland of the state was "Providence Plantations" but for some reason when they merged the island got top billing in the name.

Kind of like John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown band.

And to be clear, I'm not "negative". I'm always very hopeful. Why the heck else would I spend time posting here if I didn't believe that this program can, and will, be successful?

But this is a discussion board and that's what I do. Discuss.

Some people don't understand how to differentiate between discussion and...well...whatever it is they think it is.

You're cool though.

Long time ago, I lost a trivial pursuit game on the question what state has the longest name.

Never would have guessed Rhode Island and Providence Plantations was the answer as I tried to count letters in Miss and Mass.

Haven't forgotten it since.
