Richie Incognito suspended by team for bullying

Unfortunately in the NFL toughness gets miscontrued to be what Richie Incognito represents.
Thing that I just can't wrap my head around - how exactly was this stuff supposed to make Martin tougher?

Well, that'd be great. But it's not going to happen.

You know how many times I've been called a n-bomb while playing basketball, mostly with teenage/young black adults? Too many to count.
Infinity more times than me, apparently!

you know what else ain't gonna happen? changing society to steer richie incognitos into being more in touch with his feelings

the best we can do is lock people like him up. the problem is he hasn't broken any laws. football is an outlet for his craziness

i think when all is said and done, incognito is not going to be the worse offender in this.

hes certainly the 'face' of it now, but something doesnt seem right.

tannehill describes richie & martins relationship as big bro/lil bro. hartline said martin laughed about it.

coaching staff clammed up, which means its either code red guilty, or guilty of jumping the gun and leaving incognito out to dry.

i dont know what is going on, but im telling ya...its odd.

martin may be batshit crazy. and it may be independent of all this nonsense.

I love how the Golic's of the world said "Omg, he played the voicemail for his teammates and they laughed about it!" Clearly that means it didnt bother Martin at all. Maybe, just maybe, Martin was trying to fit in and alleviate some of this by playing the voicemail and laughing about it with his teammates.

The account they read on Mike and Mike of a former Dolphins lineman who witnessed this was somewhat telling. The meathead group will take it as Martin overreacted. The rest of us will look at it as over the line and there's no place for that in sports/workplace/life.

Basically he described a big brother/little brother relationship in which Incognito encouraged him but went off on Martin if he wasn't trying hard enough or performing well enough. He also said this goes on all the time but that some players know the line they can't cross with certain players and for Incognito, he wasn't able to recognize that line.

Take that as you will.

so youre saying that after a public airing, where everyone laughed at it, including martin...he then when back home and said...'no, hes serious. im in danger!!'

im not buying that.

if so, then martin=batshit crazy.

hes likely bipolar or something.

its sad situation for sure, but the lynch mob here may need to put down the pitchforks for a second and take a deep breath.

too many micro people, not enough (none) macro.

who knows....

I read this article on MMQB by the ex Dolphins O Lineman.

Martin could be crazy or whatever...my comment isn't in relation to this case...but I always get a kick out of this:

"Playing football is a man’s job"

Is it? Sounds like a child's job to me. Playing a game with wacky antics, locker room hijinx, and pranks. Trips to Vegas with the buddies.

Yeah, real serious stuff, MAN stuff.

maybe martin thought 'playing football is a mans job'...and he didnt want to play any more.

so he decided this was a great out.

maybe hes not batshit crazy.

maybe hes a diabolical genious.

stanford educated. son of 2 harvard lawyers...

hes going to be the face of anti-bullying. hes going to be Mr Freakin Kumbaya in the lockerroom.

appointment to the Presidents anti-bullying council.

be like one of those other crazy liberals and set up a not-for-profit Anti Bullying Public Group or whatever...pay yourself a million a year off donations.

get hired by the NCAA, the NFL, MLB etc...

im not rushing to judgement anymore. im changing my tune till we hear more.

im going full anti-martin now.

incognito was the weak one here, his background was too perfect to pin this on.

incgonito was set up.

You might be 100% right...but I would guess his thoughts weren't "playing football is a man's job", but rather playing football is a dumb man's job and I'm not dumb like these guys.

i agree. i guess what i was trying to say was that just walking away and quitting looks bad and is not 'manly'.

but if he does so under these circumstances...and launches a national platform for himself, where he is King....thats genious.

Ha love that scenario. More likely though...

- Incognito is a douche, but is also a total scapegoat. I mean...he is now responsible for rookies across the league having to pick up tabs for the last 40 years? And yeah the vmail sounds bad but honestly in isolation it doesn't mean shiit. I have probably received a thousand vmails\texts\etc that started with something like "hey you ...etcetc." Not sure anyone has ever threatened to s... in my mouth though...
- The coaches told a guy who, based on his history, can be described as a borderline sociopath to "toughen Martin up", and that if Martin didn't like it he should punch Richie in the face. At best that is horrific judgment.
- I think the way Martin handled it is incredibly immature. I haven't heard anything yet to suggest that he asked Incognito to stop, or that he went to the coaches, or anyone else on the team. And then right before a game he leaves the team, and in the aftermath has totally screwed over 50 of his teammates?? I'm not blaming him for the hazing exactly, but I definitely think there were far better ways to handle it.

Lol what?

Lol what?
what, what??

i think every voicemail i leave, i start 'hey jackass...'

and the ones left on mine are usually worse.

lets get back on point here, martin is the bad guy.

I honestly can't listen to Golic anymore.. Real nice influence on our youth, NFL. We have enough inner city kids dying in the streets without their role models reinforcing that "to be a man" you must stand up and fight in all situations. Unlike the big bad NFL, when you do this in real life you face legal prosecution and retaliation. In the NFL no one is going to find you walking down the street and end your life because you beat up their brother. I guess it makes you tough to bully someone in a situation in which you know there's no repercussions and somehow the guy who walks away from the apparent societal cesspool that is the NFL locker room is viewed as less of a man. It's easy to be tough when you know nothing can happen to you...
Intercity kids are dying because NFL bowling in the locker room. The dying because the disintegration of the family unit, the promotion of the single parent family, and the erosion of the role of a father in children's lives. Men are now seen in many circumstances as merely an economic contributor to children's lives rather than a parenting resource.
That's the issue, not bullying in the NFL locker room.

I have so much to say here I could write a book. I really no longer like football It used to be my favorite sport. I can not believe the things I am hearing from all of the players who are defending this jerk Incognito. First of all there is no way that Martin got to where he is in the NFL because he is too "soft". He played for a top and tough college team, and it was his 2nd year in the NFL. I think he put up with a lot of this in his first year, even though he did not like it. But this was his 2nd year, and it was suppose to be over for him, and they should have moved on to the new guys. But they didn't. Yes he may have some mental health issues floating around. Do you not think out of all of the players in the NFL that some do not suffer from depression, anxiety or some other mental illness like the rest of the world does ? Is there something magical about football players that make them different? So last year Martin made it through, and I am sure it was very tough for him. When people say that he laughed at some of this stuff, laughing is a way that someone who is nervous or uncomfortable often reacts. That does not mean that he liked it. It was how he coped and tried to fit in.
So Incognito was like a big brother to him? Do brothers always get along? Do family members not sometimes abuse other family members? This may have made it even harder for Martin to tell someone.
What so disturbs me today is some of the comments from other NFL players. He should "man up," He should have "fought" with him. I have heard it said that he was "too smart". I have heard one player describe that Incognito was more "black" than Martin because he was one of the "brothers". Uh how is a white person more black than a bi-racial person? This is so disgusting, and I have learned today that the football culture is sickening, and they are so removed from any type of reality. No wonder a gay athlete can not "come out".
And yes, Incognito is being painted as the bad guy, and I am sure he is one of many bad guys. He is getting the brunt of this because he ended up in this situation. I am sure there are many others in the league just like him, and many rookies who are uncomfortable going to practice everyday. Why should anyone be afraid to go to work? Some of these guys dreamed about this for a lifetime, and woke up in a nightmare. Imagine what you would feel like if that happened to you.
And that is the end of my rant. Like it or not.

In no way did I say NFL bullying is the number one contributing factor. It is however, not the greatest example to set for impressionable youth who are already shown negative role model after negative role model.
