Rickie Collins

As the new football beat writer said on Axe's podcast, "money don't ride the bench." Not that I think it was the deciding factor, but the fact that they went out, spent a decent chunk of change and brought this kid in with the intention of starting, it had to at least play some role.

I don’t think it was really that close. I don’t believe we get much coach speak from Fran but this might be one scenario where he strategically says something in hopes that his backup will stay. He however also mentioned that he realizes the reality he may lose guys in the portal.
Think this is more likely the case than not. He's not going to say something bad about a kid who competed hard and may end up portalling either. He's big on loyalty. He may also know Jakari is going to stay and wants to motivate him that way too.

Considering Rickie has been in College significantly longer than Jakhari, it seems like odd logic to me. Why not give it more time and let it play out if it's even?
If it’s even and one guy has been in the program over a year less than the other, then it’s not really even is it?

I think Fran was saying Collins has gotten up to speed with the O while having sent much less time learning it than Jakari. Jackari’s primary advantage was his institutional knowledge of our O and personnel.

Sounds like Ricky has overcome that by learning everything in a shorter timeframe.

6 months ago this forum was singing his praises and saying how good he is. Collins was brought in for depth. It just shows how little we all know what actually is going on behind the scenes. For him to pick Collins this early is telling of how good Jakari is.

It's not telling at all. Fran said a week ago they were going to choose a starting QB quickly.

All it tells us is right now Collins is playing at a higher level than Jakhari. Doesn't mean Jakhari is bad.

Collins was set to be in competition for the third string spot this season at LSU slated behind Garrett Nussmeier and transfer Michael Van Buren.

and your point is? Probably the reason he transferred one would imagine. Do you think the starting QB at LSU is going to transfer to Syracuse? You do realize that Van Buren transferred to LSU after Collins left.

Nobody knows what Collins will do this year as a starter but where he stands on the 2025 LSU depth chart ( a team where he was never on the roster) doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot now. Many also have Nussmeier as the first QB drafted in the draft in 26

They entered the portal around the same time. The writing was on the wall for Rickie. We tried to sign Van Buren out of HS. He was a priority recruit. He'd be starting for us this year if he came, and he'd be backing up Nussmeier ahead of Collins if Collins stayed at LSU.

Ever heard of Arch Manning?

Who thought Collins was coming here for depth?

I don’t think people thought Collins was just a depth piece. It was pretty clear he would be competing to start.

still don't see any relevance to this with regard to his position at Syracuse.

I think he is saying Collins isn’t a savior, which isn’t a huge revelation. Doesn’t mean he’s not the best guy at the moment.
Yeah, He's a wait and see type for sure. Nobody knows how good the kid will be.

Always have to remember that McCord came here because Fran had known him for 15 years. He wasn't coming here without that personal connection. Those don't come along that often

Collins was going to get a very strong chance to start at LSU if Nussmeier had gone into the draft.

How does he know if Collins will be a savior or not? Time will tell but his view isn’t any more valid than someone saying Collins will be the next great Cuse quarterback. Also, this isn’t a knock on you. I just find his definitive tone questionable.
