Rickie Collins

I think watching the game you see why he was highly recruited but you also see why LSU didn't give him a chance and Pena left. He's an athlete but not a running QB. Every fifth pass is wildly off target. He has a low trajectory on his throws, which works for Lamar Jackson but because he's not a running threat, it just means his passes get batted down.

1st game so gotta cut him some slack. but you gotta make your reads and not lock in .
Hopefully he can watch film and see other wrs open and go thru his reads .. but may be too ingrained instinct to not lock on first

Because some posters whole schtick is to constantly talk about how dumb the board is.
He is literally 5 plus weeks behind in terms of reps. I know we do not have that amount of time, I however hope he can get coached up without losing his heart. That will be his and the coach's jobs. Everything went wrong in this game, everything went right in the Clemson game. I suspect if Ricky comes around and is serviceable where we are able to run a little bit more of a possession type offense like last year while incorporating the running game to a greater degree. We were very much like a possession passing team last year, a lot like the Patriots schematically. We will also certainly need to stop the run with greater effectiveness, I feel if this occurs schematically we will still go to a bowl game. If they give him some time and are able to run the ball I think he's going to be OK. We will see. Certainly a big if

Carney is quite small. He was warming up today and honestly I don’t know how he can see over the OL. But I know the kid can sling it and run. Can he do that in a game ? Not sure. But Rickie was unfortunately so terrible that I couldn’t believe it
He’s listed at 6’2”. If they are lying about his height that is one thing, but there’s multiple HOF QB’s that have been that height or shorter.

Yep had the same thought, I’d be giving both him AND Williams a look see sooner vs later

Not sure if the listed height is puffing or it's just an illusion since the rest of this team is gigantic, but I had the same 'smaller than I thought' impression today.

That said, it's not something I'll ever worry about. If Kyler Murray can get it done then size isn't going to stop Carney. We're not talking about an Eli Manning type that sees what can be seen from the pocket and that's it.

It's definitely an in case of emergency break glass scenario.

But, QB1 going down, QB2 looking rough... I've got to think they're thinking really hard about what they can get out of Carney's 4 games (he has 3 more to go to keep his redshirt).

If they think he can help them win, I think they'd want to get him in quickly. There are 7 games left. It'll be pretty dumb to blow his redshirt on 5 games, where one of them was a game he played one snap in. I think you can make the year worth it if he appears on at least 6.

And the bowl game.
He could play the rest of the year and red shirt next year when Steve comes back. With Steve having at least 1 year to play, possibly 2 with a medical waiver, Carney isn't really at risk of "blowing his red shirt". So that shouldn't really be a factor. If Carney shows something they should let the kid cook.

I'm certain the staff is thinking and talking through just these kinds of scenarios.

I’ll ask a sincere question… who can name an SU QB who’s had this rocky of a start to his career here that turned out to be good?

At this point, Collins’ resume includes being benched after his first series vs Colgate, struggling in the 4th quarter against Clemson, and today’s disaster.

I don’t want to say the guy is unsalvageable. But I’m racking my brain to think of someone who was this lousy to begin his time at SU yet ended up being a good starter.

I just hope that if Collins doesn't get the offense going in the first half at SMU, the staff pulls the plug and goes with one of the youngsters.
Won’t happen. I suspect we will have to go 0-3 for a change to happen.
