Honestly this one isnt about money. We just whiffed on our evaluation of Collins. It happens. We paid two QBs well. Just one isn’t working out.

Based on the two series he played, Carney just didn't seem to have that "it" factor. Let's stick with Rickie the rest of the way and hope for the best.

I am still in the camp that Rickie, sadly, gives us the best chance of winning... but how can you say the kid does not have the "it" factor. He looked very composed. Even on that terrible snap, he remained focused. I think when they say he cannot run the entire offense, they mean that they do not trust him on the deeper passes. So we would be limited to runs and a short passing game. At the same time, Rickie can hit the deep passes... but they are rarely completed, intercepted equally as much, and frequently incomplete anyway.

Even more so... him on a team with a clear #1 WR to try to force the ball to, like the kid from UConn. 30 passes, with 15 of them intended for Skyler Bell. That way, progressions do not mean as much. In contrast, with our system and depth/quantity of receivers, we benefit most when we are getting all of them the ball to keep defenses guessing (and keep them all happy).

Reality? All of these folks, adult-athletes, etc. have to be literally pinching themselves in the dream the collegiate revenue sport(s) have become nowadays for them.

Imagine, being in the business world (which what this now so definitively is) where an entity and/or one runs a multi-multi million dollar business, where you get your customers (whom are already paying for your product) to also pay (directly) a part of your overhead to boot. Providing salaries, bonuses, and the like, and, even better, you the owner get to keep 100% of the profits! What a world!

I continue to remain completely dumbfounded on this existing model where there's this type of success. Yet somehow, someway, so many voluntarily allowing themselves to be herded like sheep to such a place. Truly amazing!

It is coaching malpractice to not have a QB#2 that can run a 3rd and 9 play? I could see if we did not have a 3rd and 19 play for him. But given that two dropped passes is a 3rd and 10, I think we need a QB#2 that can run at least ONE play in that situation. What if Collins get hurt?????

That is not a good statement, Rickie had first team reps for at least 3 weeks not counting last week and you were coming off a bye week. If he didn't have the offense down, the 4th week wasn't going to help.
And that showed on the field. They should have given Luke 2/3 of the reps last week to get him ready.

They didn't b work Carney as much to provide proper snaps to No. 1 and No. 2. If Carney can learn more of the playbook, he is probably starting in a couple games. As one (or more) posters commented, they want Collins to start against GATech and Carney ready for UNC. That may be the plan.

Regardless, I believe The staff has adjusted the plan and are implementing it, it's just not as quick as any of us (staff, team, fans) want.

Those are the words he used in the PC. But, I'm not sure how much of that we should take at face value. His ownership of the punt return debacle at the end of the half was another example of him taking all the heat when clearly he was upset at the decisions being made.

His MO is to deflect blame away from the players AND his staff. Everything he says pubically should be viewed against that backdrop. I find it hard to believe that the "call sheet" or Carney's developmental readiness to face a basic 3rd and 9 play call had much to do with the decisions that were being made.

I agree, but Carney was not No. 2 until four weeks ago. Just a guess, but I think they want to build Carney up before throwing him to the wolves with full responsibility, he is a true freshman.

If Collins gets hurt, I promise you we will end up with lots of 3rd downs. Some of them less than 9, some of them more. Carney needed to get reps before Duke and SMU, much less during the bye week. C'mon. If Collins gets hurt, Carney is going to see some 3rd downs eventually.

Rickie's not good enough but seems personal for some.

It may be but I do not feel that is the case. Fans want to win. We have seen the Ricky experiment and it is not working. I’m sure he is not happy with his play but you do not keep playing someone or keep someone in any position that keeps failing. It’s time to move on. Will things improve with a change? Who knows but if we continue to do the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is crazy.
I know Fran wants to say Ricky has not really played since high school but the same could be said for Angeli. He did start in a bowl game and did play when Leonard (sp) was banged up but it was not a McCord situation.
Also Ricky was named the starter after spring which you would think he got a lot of run with the ones. Also for part of camp until Angeli won the job.
Now after four weeks and three games as the starter we continue to see the same problems. When a reporter asked Fran are you trying to run plays to Ricky’s strengths Fran said “who said we’re not.”. If that is the case more reason to change.

No one is expecting two stellar QBs. We just want/need a semi functional QB2. The fact that we did not have that last year, do not have that this year, and may not have that next year should be on Fran.

He had a crap QB room last year behind McCord. Not all Fran's fault as he wasn't left with much. Thank goodness we had an outlier season and kept QB1 healthy the entire year.

But knowing you have a bare cupboard, he needed to bring in a HS kid who could be QB2 for this season and failed to get a Top 100 QB.

For now he has failed to bring in a Top 75 HS kid for next season.

Fran has been great recruiting overall but his QB plan has stunk. Either he naively doesn't think we need a decent QB2, or he has failed to get who he has targeted. Either way it needs to change ASAP.

Why would anyone over pay for a hs recruit. We would be dumb to pay 3 to 4 million for a top ten high school recruit. How many top ten freshmen are playing and leading their teams. Ricky has been a bust so far. It happens. The issue is that Fran continues to stick with Ricky. Most schools that loose their starter have issues. Kids are not staying if they even think they may be the backup qb that has any other real options.
We did go get a second qb with high measureables it just did not translate to the field. I think Fran realized that and got Angeli but you were never getting two potential starters in the spring portal.
I think people act like we can just offer and a player automatically comes. We brought in a number of qbs in December to evaluate but you cannot make a player come.

As a dude who sees the QBs' facial expressions when they're reviewing tape, "he gets paid so I can boo" doesn't just lack empathy it lacks context.

We're there because we're fans. We're the 12th man and support our team. We scream like lunatics to mess with the other teams' offense, and for "medium" sized crowd are pretty darn successful with it.

And then we watch Rickie--who is often regarded as having issues developing confidence--and when he fails to make a play, we publicly and dramatically work to lower his confidence further? I think Rickie is in over his head as much as anybody, but booing him is bullshit and Pitt should thank us for doing so.

Maybe im a bad person but i pay to watch football, not crap. Fandom is not unconditional, it comes with expectations of success and thus value for our money. If you want to just be told you’re doing great all the time then stick to rec soccer

Why would you coach a guy to play but not have a single play that can be run on 3rd on 9? What happens if Rickie got injured, we just hope to never have a time where we need to call a pass play on 3rd down? Thats a stupid excuse.
