RIP Devante McFarlane

Anybody who has bad anxiety knows that the attacks can be crippling. Absolutely brutal. Between that and depression, much tougher issues to deal with than I think someone who hasn't experienced it can thoroughly understand.

The fact that he's moved past medication and can tackle it head on is fantastic, learning to cope is difficult.

So happy for him being in a good place now, all the best to a great young man!

Well said!

I'd also like to give a shout out to HCSS and the entire staff for the way they handled DM's situation. This is a perfect example of the "family atmosphere" that so many of the recruits mention after their visits. Kudos.

After reading that, I want to say that he is my new favorite player. But, I can't. He is among my favorite players, but there are just so many guys to root for on this team and for a wide range of reasons. I am not saying every one of these kids is perfect, but they seem to be a great bunch that are building a legacy at Syracuse and, along with the players of the past few years, are creating a definition of what it is to be a Syracuse Football player. If Devante gets to read this thread, I think he is going to find that he has many more people pulling for him, both on and off the field, than he ever imagined.

Yet anther case where you shouldn't ever judge a book by it's cover. Hope folks on here before they criticize individual players think about this situation. You never know what is happening behind the scenes (i.e. Injuries, family situations, other personal issues) that might affect these players. God bless you Devante, I also know from personal experience how debilitating this illness can be and will be praying for your continued success in managing this.

Excellent point. Many people call out players with all sorts of adjectives. Some even publish articles about it. Hint-hint, nudge-nudge. But somehow in this new world of ours all "sensitivity" and "compassion" goes out the window when it comes to sports ... and other subjects too.

Very well said. I was just going to post something to this effect but you said it much better.

I cannot even begin to imagine growing up in the conditions he was forced to grow up in...where he is today is simply a success story including first talking to his teamates about it and now publicly...as CL says a must read.

And this is the reason I posted last season that "there's things going on outside of football" with him. People were questioning everything about him in a football aspect, that's only half of what these kids deal with. They're still young adults dealing with plenty of young adult things that have 0 to do with football.

Devante,

Good stuff young man. We're proud of you.

Best,

I am very proud of Devante but I am also proud of Morris. It is not an easy situation for anyone, kid or adult, to be living with someone who is suffering from depression.Kudos to him for being a supportive team mate, friend and roomie.

As we see time after time after time with so many of these kids - it can be extraordinarily difficult to raise oneself up by the bootstrap from the environment or circumstances in which they were raised. My hat is off to each and every one of them. A lesson worth learning for those who may otherwise be a bit strapped in the empathy department.

As someone who has seen firsthand the debilitating effects of serious clinical depression, I am overjoyed by the way this young man has fought to come back. I can't imagine trying to balance school, athletics, and this awful disease all at the same time.

Kudos, Devante. Here's to your continued health and well-being. And LGO!!!

Just saw Citizen Kane last night on TVM and saw that scene.

"I get to go to school for free. I get to see all the girls. All this is free."

Magical. Glad he has overcome these challenges to have that perspective of his current situation.
