First question I have is: can they shoot? Looking at their stats, only 3 guys have made a 3 on the season.

Ron Harper Jr: 6-16. Last year was 38-109.
Jacob Young: 3-7. Last year was 18-65.
Montez Mathis: 2-10. Last year was 19-64.
Edit: missed one - they have a freshman who is 1-3.

Nobody else on the team has made a 3. They’ve made 12 in 3 games. We made 12 in the first half yesterday.

They don’t seem to even attempt that many 3s. Are they one of these disciplined teams that will be able to hold the ball for 30 seconds and slow the pace to crawl, while working the zone and using the short corner and ending each possesion with a layup? If that’s their style, seems that it may be tougher to execute that this early in the season in their first real test. Also, usually those teams who hurt us in that way are conference teams that see us twice a year. The zone historically has often completely flummoxed out of conference teams, especially early in the season - when we play it well.

I believe their coach has a rep as a strong defensive coach and they only gave up 62 ppg last year. It will be interesting to see how our man to man offense flows against a good defensive team. We know we can light up any zones, but we haven’t really been challenged by a team that can play a solid man to man yet. Kadary will be big here IMO. We will need his ability to go by people and stress a defense. And Guerrier is a tough matchup for a lot of teams, so I’m interested to see how they handle him.

So glad we have a game against a decent team to anticipate these kinds of things again. It’s been a long 9 months. Cannot wait for Tuesday.

They are not a great shooting team. Harper is their best shooter, but he’s more of an all around scorer. Their bread and butter is getting to the basket and scoring in transition to take advantage of their athleticism. This will be a big test for Quincy and Griffin. Can they continue to rebound like they have against the tomato cans.

Good analysis and insights.

Thanks. I should add that I absolutely haven’t watched them play this year and maybe not even last year either...I’m strictly going off numbers and what I’ve heard/read for them.

They can’t shoot but they have a top ten defense. Not having Sidibe will really hurt. Rutgers has two really good 5s. Omoruyi will start but Myles Johnson is the better of the two. He had a propensity to get dumb fouls so he doesn’t start games.

Griffin played RU twice last season and was shut down both times (1/9 and 3/11 respectively).

RUs strategy on offense will to get out in transition and if they can’t then they will keep 6’6” PG Mulcahy in the center of the zone to look for dishes. He’s an true PG and good rebounder but rarely ever looks to score himself.

Rutgers plays very physical MSU style foul you every time down the court defense. It’s hard to out tough Rutgers but that’s how you beat them. Outrebound them or get hot from 3

First team to 60 wins imo

This is a good write up on Rutgers. If we can rebound this sounds like your typical team that would struggle against the zone...

Based on that report, it would appear that Rutgers' strength is at center, in which case, we can expect them to try to get Marek in foul trouble early on. Seems like a game where we're gonna want to see Frank in there kind of early, to see how he will fare against their "two near seven footers who can defend the rim and patrol the glass at near elite levels." Should be an interesting match up...

I suppose if we beat them, we should be ranked thereafter, eh?

Hmmmm, very interesting. Wondering if that is due to them having very good 3 point defense overall or were they maybe concentrating on Griffin.

will be all about how we shoot. I dont think we do much inside in the half court set

Griffin led Illinois in scoring in the second game last year vs RU and shot 3-6 from 3 in the loss.

In the first game he struggled to shoot but had 8 boards in Illinois 3 pt win.

They play exclusively man defense, right?
So here's a game where Marek at the 5 will benefit us against their 5s, at least offensively. Play Marek primarily out/away from the basket in his distributor/drive capacity - hope to see alot of that

Agreed. He needs to avoid any dumb fouls though. By dumb, I mean like diving into the guys legs trying to get the ball back after missing a shot he could’ve made, or something insane like that, that he has had a 3 year habit of doing. He can’t afford to pick up any of those so that he can protect the rim more aggressively. Seems we’ll need one of the young C’s to come through for us at least for a stretch.

Good stuff.
Should be an interesting game. Will they be affected by a 9 day layoff?

I am most worried about Marek and Kadary getting in foul trouble. With Bourama and Buddy out, if either of those guys get in foul trouble, we are in a pickle.

Their coach is the only reasonably successful protege of Calhoun and I expect he will play the same physical, extended in your face man defense JC was known for. A lot of bumping, holding and shoving. Perfect fit for the B1G.

This will be a great test for JGIII and Kadary. Can they pressure the pressure, bumping, pushing and holding? I suspect the reason Joe spent so much time in the weight room in the off season was to prepare himself for the pounding the Rutgers kids will put on him. Even though Kadary is from NYC and played for the best prep school in the country, I suspect it will be a shock for him too. Quincy and Alan are going to have to step up and battle down low for position. If we can rebound and defend in the paint decently, we will win because we have a massive advantage in terms of shooting, passing and overall skill.

So much will depend on the refs and how closely they call the game. If they let the Rutgers kids bang and pound and do not call fouls, we are in a world of trouble.

Id rather shoot a three than drive into Quincy, AG and Frank.

need Marek to play tougher, our guards are soft on the perimeter with buddy back.

Buddy isn’t playing and I’m willing to bet Frank really doesn’t play much at all unless Marek is in foul trouble.

Marek’s been stout so far, interested to see how he looks vs a p5.

Didn’t realize buddy’s still out

I think Kadary and Buddy will prove otherwise when they’re in there together.

It’s mainly talked about on the offensive end, but Kadary can be the type of defender who makes his teammates better. Buddy has the height and experience to do his job, when he’s playing next to a defensive dynamo.

This is a game that has a short JB rotation written all over it. I think we play 7, but really 6.5. Newton will be the first guy off the bench.

IF we lose, *I can’t wait for the dead serious takes that “we looked so good against Rider when we went deep, why didn’t we do the same against Rutgers? Let teh kiDz playyyy!”

*That part was sarcasm.

Yeah. We haven’t seen anything from Braswell or Edwards that show the can be successful against a physical power 5 team. You can talk me into Frank playing, but he will be the 7th guy. I think we can play 9 this year comfortably, but two of those guys aren’t available this game.
