Espn is as much of the story. Mark s had quite a line about having no responsibility...

'journalists do not have the same responsibiliy to turn over evidence' ... yada yada yada

I think we found ESPN / PS / Mark Schwarz defense

ESPN isn't as much the story, its a small tangent part of the story.

The main story is still a grown man in a position of power touching young kids. That will always be the center of the story

Sonny Hustin pressed it further as well, in the round table with Cooper. Hopefully that side of the story has some legs.

To play devils advocate, ESPN has the Post Standard to fall back on. The PS had the same tape at the same time ESPN did and they did nothing either. They didn't put it out at all not even yesterday. So if you go after ESPN then you must go after the Post Standard!

Of course. So what. Schwartz used the same "necessarily" language as the espn vp. Clearly they received some talking points as espn goes in defense mode. I just wish ac had asked one more question - but are you saying the decision to air and the decision to alert authorities is judged by the same standard?

The difference is the PS never used it in a story. So they can still say they doubted it's authenticity. ESPN put it on the air...which means either they believe it now, or they chose to play an incriminating tape that They still believe is a forgery. ESPN really has no direction to turn to justify their (in)actions.

Agree with you that this is basically a side story...but honestly I'm hoping that it causes ESPN to tone down a little and be less sensationalistic and more, well, journalistic in their presentation.

I just meant that particular cnn segment . Wasnt clear, sorry

The Post-Standard and the SPD refusing to talk probably makes this thing have the appearance of big school with too much influence in small town to outsiders.

I guess I can understand ESPN and the P-S's reasoning - right or wrong- regarding releasing the tape in 2003 but why didn't they release it at the same time they broke the Lang accusation 2 weeks ago? Why wait even then? Supposedly they withheld it because there was a lack of corroboration - well they found enough to disclose the issue after Lang yet didn't release the tape at the same time? Maybe I'm a cynic but their piecemeal disclosure of information sure seems to be deliberate and for reasons other than finding the truth.

Are you kidding me - who looked bad in this story was CNN - that was an embarrassing report by a bunch of people who had not spent much time at all looking into the matter before discussing it on national TV! If this is the way they do most of their reporting, I don't know how anyone could watch another story of theirs without a great deal of skepticism.

They asked a number of questions out loud that already have answers to them. Such as why SU did not know about the tape - Davis has already said he did not give it to them. The reporter did not know if the Fines were divorced?! And on and on. AC did not own Schwarz but he ought to own up to the fact that his program reported this story incredibly poorly.

By the way, I'm still waiting for someone to hold Schwarz and ESPN accountable for not including the tape in their initial report. I read what ESPN said about that earlier but I would love for some journalist to press Schwarz hard on live TV about that subject. AC did not come close to that tonight because he knows far less about the case than the people on this board.

i can say this, I have spoke to people at the Post Standard who would not have wanted to go with the story when the second accuser turned out to be hius step brother.

They wanted to create multiple news cycles...they're really milking this story.

People are going to question why the PS and ESPN didn't show the tape earlier.
For all we know holding the tape could come down to syracuse connections on both ends.

big east , they are talking to their audience, not us. Most people don't know those facts.

I think their lack of knowledge on the story was actually to Syracuse's benefit. They barely brought up Jim Boeheim's name. Only to mention that he lived across the street from the Fines. Any story that veers away from JB and Syracuse University is a good story.

Completely agree. And Fitzpatrick's public temper tantrum last week makes local the CNY law enforcement agencies look even more mickey mouse.

You're right dash but CNN as a supposedly journalistic organization has a responsibility to know and seek out the facts. That they did so little to ascertain the facts is evident.

I agree, the report didn't impress me and I thought they didn't research nor know the facts for a nationally televised segment. I wonder if Laurie Fine thankfully backing out of the interview left them unprepared (they should have been prepared with facts for the interview one would think though) to discuss the issue.

I also liked how they talked about jb driving off quickly when we could all see him driving slow. Its like that correspondent thought he was on the radio.
