I met Scott Drew in the security line at the Columbus airport years ago. I asked what he was in town for and he mentioned they had played a scrimmage against OSU. I can’t remember if he called it closed or secret.

Had some recruits on campus today and witnessed UAlbany and Colgate having a secret scrimmage in our gymnasium. Was an interesting watch for 15 minutes.
Which campus location

Some interesting and good matchups. I wonder if we should be doing this rather than exhibition games vs. D2. What do we really learn vs. outmatched, undersized teams except maybe a false sense of security. I remember Kaleb Joseph and Jalen Carey looking really good in these exhibitions and we know how they turned out. These "scrimmages" are actually games with the clocks, scoreboards and college referees. There is no crowd and some of them are actually held in teams' home arenas. It is like a game during Covid. Seems like it would be more beneficial than beating up on the equivalent of a JV team.

It seems like the secret scrimmages allow you to see where you stand against better competition without the concerns of a loss hurting your tourney resume.

Hypothetically yes although a number of these have been very controlled vs a true scrimmage. So I think that's certainly somewhat true but with an asterisk

I would think the coaches must think that's a beneficial way to organize them in those cases. Like getting an extra practice against other good players since it doesn't have to be fan or TV friendly.

read what the Minute Man had to say, but this wasn't so secret, they had fans and reporters, how did they manage that, because it was a game benefiting a charity?
Yes if all the proceeds go to charity, it can be open to the public. That's how the Iowa and DePaul women were able to play in Kinnick Stadium last weekend.

Exhibition games don’t go on your resume
