Class of 2024 SG Gavin Doty (NY) Portal from Siena

I understand. I will support Gerry, but I was hoping for an outside hire. My thoughts on the roster are just that it’s hard to completely flip a roster. I would hope that we recruit over all of the Siena and retained Syracuse players. May the best players earn playing time.
I still don’t get this inside hire vs. outside hire nonsense. Did everyone read Chris Carlson’s article today? Gerry certainly used some of what he learned as an assistant here (shorter, more intense practices) but much more if his coaching style developed in the two years he has been gone. He seems to have gleaned a lot from Beaury too. I am fine with those who say they would have preferred someone with success at a higher level that the MAAC, but the fact that GMac has a Syracuse connection on his resume should not be seen as a negative in my mind. Quite the opposite!

People are afraid of the offensive design. That's the concern with the Syracuse connection.

Understood. But read the Carlson article that talks about how GMac’s offensive design is based on efficiency metrics and the right players taking the right shots at the right times. That’s my point. It’s markedly different from what we have seen the last few years under JB and then Red.

Agreed. I think people saying that really haven’t watched Siena play. I’ll say the one thing that concerns me is the slow pace. Not that it’s not effective, but it can be boring. I really don’t want to be TB Virginia lite.

One thing that’s interesting is Illinois is 296 in tempo vs Siena at 321. Oddly while they are deliberate they don’t play a boring brand of basketball nor does UConn who ranked 319 this year in Kpom basically playing the same pace as Siena.

He was a frosh, probably should have played less, but not the guy who cost us most. He has to learn some things but has potential. We have had frosh that never saw the court or looked useless when they did who became ley figures later in their careers. So maybe you should give him a little more run before castigating him.
he isnt wrong though, he probably isn't brought back if his last name is smith

You can SAY your offense is based on this, that, and the other thing.

But where the rubber met the court, it was pretty underwhelming.
Siena's O metrics were... meh.

Not unlike Red saying how great our Level 5 D was going to be, because we were going to play VERY HARD!!!!
And we did, for a handful of games.
And then we didn't anymore.

All of which is why sooooo many fans were clamoring for an outside hire -
somebody with PROVEN offense systems that actually showed it on the court.
aka - Hodgson & Schertz, and maybe Murray (if we went the route of a non-HC).

Gerry had the
/ checks notes
// NINTH best season in Siena history. THIRD place in the MAAC.

They got BLOWN OUT by a crap Indiana team.
Lost to powerhouse programs like: Iona, Merrimack 2x, Sacred Heart, Quinnipiac, Fairfield.

If not for going on a nice run in the MAAC tournament, and then giving Dook a run for 3/4 of that NCAAT game, would anybody anywhere in P4 have been looking at the coach who had that record in a low-low-low major conference??

GMac has not SHOWN to do anything special on O, over 2 seasons of results.

So yeah - he can talk about what they want to do, how they want to do it, yada yada yada -
but I'll remain skeptical to, at best, cautiously optimistic - until I see it on the floor in games that count.

Do think the success for is due to the players they recruit or the coaches scheme or “system”. Do you think GMAC will be able to recruit more talented players at SU vs Sienna? GMAC was not playing in the game so how could he do anything special? Special players make that happen, not coaches. My guess is Jimmy/Joes account for 90% + of a coaches success.

I get that Moesch is likely coming here because of the whole local/GMac thing. However, the MVC was the 9th highest NET ranked conference. The MAAC was 25th.

I have it on good authority Doty was offered by at least 1 team still playing, and the offer was significantly better than what I would ever imagine. So, some other teams think quite highly of him too.

Not shocked. GMAC is not overrated at talent evaluation and development. My guess is Illinois sees there Keaton Wagler replacement. But certainly has the work ethic for UConn as well.

UConn?

Ducks.
Like Koroma who played for LeMoyne last year and transferred to Yukon. Hardly plays, makes decent coin and is going to the Final Four. Everyone has different priorities. And he helps fill out Hurley's roster with a very good player.

I should remember that people don't read what other posters are responding to. The post I responded to was not about Doty. It was about the idea of three or four Siena players coming to Syracuse. I have no problem with Doty as an option. Even considering three or four Siena transfers would have been a laughable idea in the last 50 years of Syracuse basketball.
