In terms of filling out the roster, don’t you think an average player with no shot to play professionally from a school like Marist, or a JUCO wouldn’t come to SU to be a 12th, 13th guy and to get an NIL check?
So this kid from Marist doesn't care at all about actually playing?

Good grief. I just can't even answer a post like that. Kids want money and playing time. There is only so much playing time available. We aren't going to play 12 guys the minutes they want.
When we’ve fallen so far as a program, that the fanbase accepts not filling out a roster with all scholarships used, you know you’re dead as a program. Forget NIL, there are plenty of talented basketball players that would love a free education, food, and housing to play at Syracuse.

You take about NIL here is dumb. We need to find program players still. Take fliers on guys. Having open scholarships is unnaceptable

maybe a senior. gets to go to a Power 5 school , with better education to make some money and maybe play here and there. not too shabby.

Why is it hard to understand that if you use more than 13 scholarships, the tuition must come out of your NIL budget. That’s money you have to take out of the $20.5 million revenue share. Why in the world would you do that AND have to pay the players. That’s the definition of insane. For years JB NEVER used all his scholarships. Those guys aren’t going to see the floor.

I would roll with 8 maybe 9 at most that get paid real money. Get some kids to fill out the roster pay them a few bucks and call it a day
Maybe give those players a chance for free college education like the old days.

JB often didn’t use all 13 scholarships and would reward a walkon.

petar was the 12th schollie player signed last year...so I would aim to fill out the spots 12-15 with players of similar ilk...players who hustle, players who have the requisite size/height, and players who are willing to be at the end of the bench

i would target international players for those slots or low major juco players etc...

duke has a 7 footer from turkey that hasnt played this year, for example

youre not looking for the world to sign up...simply 3 or 4 guys

you never know if you may need an extra 7 footer at some point in the year etc...and you might just luck out and find a guy like marek or maliq who were both examples of lowly/unranked players who did well

might it be slightly difficult? sure...but it is far from impossible
The other factor is that a coach isn’t telling a prospective transfer that he’d be the #15. He’d say he would be one of a group of players competing for a role from 8-12. And, ‘stuff’ happens. People get hurt, either short term or long term and people disappoint and don’t meet expectations. I’m not sure the freshmen are guaranteed a lot of minutes if we’re a good team next year. A transfer ostensibly has strength and experience and could push the frosh down.

I completely agree with this. Being focused on filling up the full roster is a weird thing to be obsessed with right now.

We need better players not more players.

Do we have reason to believe this is a Closing/Confirming visit, or do we have info about him having other visits scheduled?

I know, I find it funny since the excuse for JB’s decline was the scholarship reduction.
There were maybe 1-2 years during sanctions that scholarships #’s were an issue.

It's playing with fire, though.

If you don't have injuries, 10 or 11 is adequate. But have a guy or two get dinged up or sustain an injury that's more severe, and all of the sudden you are significantly compromised. It's like driving without insurance, you cross your fingers -- and sometimes you don't get burned, but sometimes you do.
I'm willing to just accept a lost season if there are that many injuries.

What I am saying is what kind of quality player would come here knowing they weren't going to play? We only have 2 players back. We have 4 frosh coming in. Who is going to come here to be the 12, 13, 14, and 15th player?
Just lie to them. Let's be more like the sec. Cheat, steal, lie, win.
I have a poster telling me that we should be able to bring in 15 good guys. I just don't see that as a possibility. If we can get to 11, I would be very happy with that.
His name is Mr. CardiacCuse. Let's be respectful here.

1-2 years it was an actual issue. Many more years that it was an excuse. ;)

The investigation itself over the number of years it slowly dragged on probably did hurt recruiting but the actual sanction pain from lost scholarships I thought was probably 2 years, however I just researched it and we lost 12 scholarships over 4 years. Yikes. I was wrong (unless google’s AI is wrong) . How many recruits were scared away during the lengthy investigation - who knows? It had to be a deterrent not knowing what future punishments including banning tournament competition would last etc, we were restricted with how many assistants could even go on the road to recruit too. Add in Boeheim and Hop’s involvement with the Olympics during much of that crazy timeframe had to have some effect too. Boeheim suspended for 9 games in 2015-16 and Hop leaving after the 2016-2017 season certainly had to hurt. Not good times.

The video of everybody besides Lampkin was underwhelming, to say the least. Nothing like the video we’re seeing from Kyle and Kingz. Physically, Kyle plays way bigger than his listed 6’9” 230, and Kingz just looks really good, statistically and in his highlights.
Thanks for the response. Sort of how I remember it too but wasn’t sure.

There’s going to be a lot of doubt even if we get top tier portal guys. Rightfully so given the last few years.

Really could use some positive reinforcement that these guys this year are tourney guys compared to last year.

Izzo talked this weekend about how hard it was to play more than 7-8 guys in a rotation. You need complete buy in and guys understanding not every game would be equal.

But is our head coach, who is on the hot seat, and needs to succeed next year or lose his job?
