Class of 2020 SG/SF Nate Kingz (OR) TRANSFERRING TO SYRACUSE (4/2/25)

Team Lefty Honorable mention, Jimmy Boeheim
How crafty, you ask? He seemed ambidextrous finishing in the lane.
How sneaky good? I could swear he sometimes took shots with his right hand.
How tricky? People often went up to him and asked, "are you righty...or are you lefty?"
How much of a puzzle was he? I'm still trying to figure out if he's on the all righty or all lefty team.
Eric devensorf has entered the chat. I’m almost positive he made a left handed jumper to force it vs manhattan in his first game. He was so good with his left. JJ should watch his tape.

I’m happy we got kings and this isn’t a direct response to this as I believe he’ll be a good piece and a good upgrade from bell. It’s more just a general thing I’ve noticed the last few weeks but no offense to you and some others, why is the response always “well it can’t be any worse than last year” like yeah that’s the point if we’re even close to anything last year it’s going to be a disaster. I don’t want “any worse than last year” we want and NEED to be significantly better.
No worse sets a floor that kinda assumes better. But I agree with your point, and think that Kingz will be a significant improvement.

So what do we expect the plan to be here? 3 guard starting lineup? JJ at PG, Kingz SG? Kingz off the bench?

If we're starting him as the defacto SF and see that lineup 20+ minutes per, I think we're going to get in trouble on the boards/defensively...
Kings as a G/, with JJ at the 2.

I'm not sure where the idea started that Kingz is a SF. Based on his actual height and game tape, this guy is a guard of some kind. I'd guess he's a 3rd guard in a small ball lineup and that he and Kiyan split the available minutes for that role.

It appears we also are making a big effort to upgrade the size and athleticism of our forwards. Personally, I think we are moving away from the traditional center because we don't have the massive NIL required to get a good one.

Did some additional digging on Nate. He went by Nate Meithof prior to last year. Played at a prep school for one year then at Juco powerhouse College of Southern Idaho for a season. Looks like he was hurt for a year before transferring to Oregon State. Has definitely improved his outside shoot each year. Also has good rebounding stats. This might have been a diamond in the rough pickup. I think he definitely starts at SF. Might see a 3 man rotation between SG and SF with him, JJ and Kiyan with Womack getting some occasional time in mop up.

this article is really good...(though i dont have access now due to subscription issues) really makes me root for Kingz to make his dreams come true...he's been through a lot.

Personality-wise, I think that explains his low volume last season with Oregon State. I hope the coaches can find a way to get him more shots...and pray they dont stick him in the corner like they did Bell because he is capable of much more.

Baseline, right

He's not coming here to sit, when he was a starter at OSU.

People get too hung up on positions. We'll start three guards, then.

That's how I see it as well. Kingz is a starting player. He is not a PG and neither is JJ (who we also know is a starter). Which leads me to:

PG: ? / (JJ) / Fennel
SG: JJ / (Kingz) / Kiyan
SG: Kingz / Kiyan / Womack
PF: Kyle or White
PF: Freeman / ?

C: Not a starter - A defensive specialist who gets minutes when playing a team with a dominant center.

I think there's a lot of validity to that projection.

If we land someone like Claude, that's four solid scorers and more firepower than we had last year. In that lineup, I could see someone like Kyle starting at the 5, rebounding / playing defense / setting screens and clearing out. There's only 1 basketball, so a role player would fit in that kind of lineup.

Obviously, I hope we upgrade at center, too, but I could see a lineup like that with the four you have projected + Claude.

Y

JJ is playing more than 25 mpg. We may not like it but it’s happening.
While past history would dictate that that’s likely true, if we have five guards who can play, and JJ is perhaps the third leading scorer behind Freeman and Kingz, there may not be the need to have him out there on the days his shot is not falling.
