Shafer

I have heard many a podcast where Julian Whigham is not very complimentary regarding his former coach Scott Shafer. I have also heard from many former players regarding Shafer's outbursts at practices with language that would make a Marine DI blush and blaming players after loses that their play was going to cost him his job. Then of course there is the whole Dabo Swinney thing. Glad we have Dino Babers and Scott Shafer is long in the rear view mirror. Go Orange!!!!!!!

Did he ever light one up after a Syracuse victory? Don't remember that, which is why it understandably burns some people.

I was crushed that his team beat mine that day, but it didn’t bother me a bit that he celebrated his success with a cigar.

He coached a great game that day.

And, he embraced the players he brought to Syracuse before and after the game.

He didn’t leave Syracuse University - he was fired.

I wish him well.

I don’t dislike him for his time at SU. He did the best he could. Wasn’t his fault he was in over his head. And he was a good DC.

I do, however, think it was quite childish and in poor taste to light up a victory cigar while walking through the concourse after a game at SU.

Good luck to him, but not going to root for him.
Thought it showed no class. Cuse gave him a shot at being a head coach (likely his only shot). He failed and rightfully was fired. But at least respect the place that thought enough of him to give him his shot. No need to show up Cuse in that situation.

Over his head is the best thing I can say about his tenure as HC at SU.

In his last two years as head coach, we had 3 wins over Power 5 teams -- including 2 over Wake Forest.

We went to double overtime against a 1-AA school and should have lost if not for fake FG and a missed XP.

What about that doesn't scream "in over your head"? Outside of the result-based evidence, my eyes told me we were unprepared on many occasions and recruited at a level one tier below what we needed to in the ACC.

The resources he was afforded may not have been what, in turn, have been given to Dino Babers. But he certainly did not earn anything beyond what he got, which was a shot.

He took us to a bowl win his first year.

He was not over his head that season.

He had horrible luck with QBs the next two seasons - our first seasons in the ACC.

Plus, Doug Marrone did not leave the cupboard full of talent when he left.

I recall disagreeing with some of Scott Shafer’s decisions toward the end, but I didn’t ever feel that he was over his head.

all he did was show up his former players. Coyle never liked him. Coyle was the guy who canned him. Where was Coyle that day? In his second year as Minnesota AD, he could have cared less that MTSU beat us. Shafer acted like a douche

He was given three years. Most coaches are given more time than that.

He was fired because a new AD wanted his own guy.

I don’t recall him bad mouthing the University the day his team came to the Dome and whipped us.

The loss hurt a lot. But the cigar meant nothing to me.

56-0 L's don't happen often -- much less against a team that is at the same level as you (GT finished 7-6 in 2013).

He was not a good head coach. Overmatched in a lot of ways. Decision making was atrocious and his recruiting of undersized guys all over the secondary was really, really poor.

Horrible luck with QB's? Yes. But Babers didn't exactly have great luck his first two years, either, but found a way to beat two ranked teams -- including the #1 team in the country.

You are in the minority here.

The decision at the end of this drive told everyone what type of coach Shafer.

No HC trying to win the game would do what Shafer did. The team was 3-8 and he wouldn’t play to try and win the season was over anyway.

Shafer should have never been hired.

A more pressing concern than a coach who has been gone for 4 years would be the current coach who has 1 winning season mostly as a of the QB who the much maligned previous coach recruited and 3, 4-8 seasons and many colossal blow outs on his watch.

A more Pressing concern would be a poster who can’t see when a legacy recruit gets recruited as a favor to an alum when that recruit wasn’t getting any division 1 offers and that poster just completely ignores that to post idealistic opinions.

Shafer was a terrible hire.
Babers did a terrible job in 2019.
He deserves some criticism.
His hiring wasn’t a problem though. He was the type of hire Syracuse football should aspire for.

I also give Dino a bigger slack because he inherited a mess from Scott Shafer. He now owns the mess but he didn’t inherit what Shafer inherited.

This post is dead on.

He was the greatest coach ever until he wasn’t. This forum has an incredibly selective memory and a raging inferiority complex.
I don't remember anyone thinking he was a great coach. I think we were hoping he was a good coach. His first year was okay. And he did bring in a great QB. Something that Marrone didn't do and the jury is still out on Dino. But some of his game decisions were horrible. And I will never miss his rants about how we weren't looking for 4 star kids. we were looking for 2 star kids like Chandler Jones, Nassib, etc. That just drove me crazy. It's next to impossible to be smarter than everyone else long term. You need the players.

I don't know that is true. It's not like Shafer inherited the '85 Bears. Marrone didn't recruit a D-1 QB and that is what Shafer was dealt. Dino inherited ED from Shafer. What NFL players did Shafer inherit from Marrone.

Shafer was hired as a continuation of Marrone.
Not to rebuild the program.
If the cupboard was bare that is on Shafer. He was with Marrone. Marrone wasn’t a good recruiter however Marrone was a top Notch game planner and always had the team ready to play with a good plan.

That should have been expected from Shafer. Shafer was awful at game planning and preparation. He was predictable.

Shafer doesn’t get any benefit of the doubt. Again he was hired to continue what Marrone did. His hiring should have never occurred. If Dr. Gross wasn’t trying to keep spending down because he wasn’t being audited the football decision likely gets a better candidate.

2019 Dino deserves criticism. I will his recruiting this offseason does appear better and the 2018 season may be helping with some of These recruits were are getting a year later than expected.

Would you say to CO, if you were to meet him in person, that he is only only the team because of his father? Because that is basically what your doing by posting it on social media. I'm not being idealistic, I just don't see any reason to throw shade on a young person for no reason at all.

No no. that isn't what you said or what is reality. Recruiting is on the Head Coach. Period. On every team. And the recruiting under Marrone was not good. Maybe not as good as G-rob if you look back at it. That isn't on Shafer. So just stop it with that. The buck stops at the top. I'm certainly not defending Shafer as a coach. But he left Dino with a D-1 QB. As did G-Rob did with Marrone. Of the three, only Marrone didn't leave a D-1 QB in his wake. And you can't win in football at really any level, without a good QB.

How many people get jobs because of connections?
If you don’t think that type of stuff doesn’t happen in all forms of Life I can’t help you.
I am proud of Jim Boeheim taking care of an alum’s son who was outstanding for him and the school.
He had the spot and used it.

You think it’s demeaning to say that I don’t.
If I got into Harvard law because of a connection and I graduate from Harvard law school what do they call me? A Harvard law graduate.

What was Terrell Hunt?
2013 we were successful because Marrone left a solid OL, solid stable of RBs and Terrel Hunt.

I don't want to knock the kid but he wasn't very good. And we both know that. What ACC team could he start at this year? Come on. Certainly not as good as Nassib or Eric.
Marrone left an ACC level OL and running game.
Our running game was top notch. With Hunt we had a serviceable QB.

Shafer went away from the running game in 2014 that is on him.

Babers has more to crow about than any coach since P... and it’s not much of a discussion either.

Shafer is the 2nd worst since P.

Feel like that was the era of once promising offensive players getting worse over the course of their careers. George Morris, Devante McFarland, Ashton Broyld come to mind.

You mean the 2013 team that Shafer led to a bowl win against a B1g team? Not to mention that Hunt got hurt I believe on this first play of the game in game one of those years. But Marrone left with a full cup board. We ended up with a walk on QB during that time. Yeah, that roster was just chalf full of NFL types. How many were drafted? How many of them stuck in the NFL. The cupboard was bare. I was around when we had talent. We haven't had that in a long time. I hope we can win 5 or 6 games this year. But we sure didn't have it at the start of Shafers tenure. Didn't have it when he left either. Except for the most part Eric Dungey.

Yeah. But it isn't exactly a high bar.

Red lit many a cigar in the War Memorial, Old Armory and State Fair arena where the Nats originally played, Smoking used to be allowed even in theatres back in the day. In the great Nat Knick rivalry the NY sports writers used to complain that every man, woman and child smoked to befuddle the Knicks. (Don't ask me to explain this) And that the fans tugged on the wires supporting the basket when the Knicks were shooting fouls.
Oh, and Red once knocked his son over backwards when the kid drew a T for taunting a ref. Don't think he lit one after that game.
Let me just say - Red Auerbach.
