Marrone could be the next viable candidate...

As glad as I am that Strong stuck with Lville, I would much rather that job close up ASAP.

You think TN is getting a reality check this week. They have been turned down by what, 3 coaches publicly? You aren't who you think you are.

No need to worry!! Doug will lead us into the ACC and prob be around for at least the next 8 years.. That's how I see it.

Tennesee can't pay as much as they want to. They owe $5mil to Dooley for his buy out and $4mil more for buyouts for his assistants. They can't afford another long term high money contract. Guarantee that is why that job is not filled yet. No money give these guys.

i dont know if thats true that they dont have money to give these guys. they offered strong 3.5 million.

It's nice to see a "heavy weight" get a reality check as to how much weight they don't have to throw around.

isn't this exactly how they ended up with Dooley the last time? whiffs on multiple big name coaches before settling...

don't see Marrone coming to the rescue for them - and even if he did their fans likely wouldn't be impressed based on his resume at SU so far

I have zero concern, and I honestly don't understand people's hand wringing. I guess Marrone might have been lying when he said that his guiding thought, when he took a job at Cortland all those years ago, was about how to get back to be head coach at Syracuse University. Maybe he really is a duplicitous schemer and had us all fooled these 4 years.

In addition to the above reasons that Tennessee has little cash to work with, Syracuse will enter the ACC and will increase their budget by roughly $10-$15MM. Doug and staff should all be getting raises even if there is no attempt to lure him elsewhere. Gross has been very good overall to Syracuse athletics and I don't think he lets HCDM and crew walk without putting forth a competitive offer. Besides, DM has it made here as long as he wins. Much like Boeheim, he is an SU product, loves the school has loyalty to the school and being at a private school (not named ND or USC - real, not imagined) there is no expectation of a national championship year in and year out. SEC schools expect a title contender annually, that does not work well for job security.

After everything Marrone has said about this being his dream job, if he left he'd be dead to SU.

Could not have said that better myself. And I will add that, when asked about Marrone's extension, Gross said something to the effect that Marrone appreciates the appreciation that the athletic department/Gross has shown him. That clearly says to me that Marrone is now, or will be soon, making more money than the original contract called for. Couple that statement with the fact that Syracuse will now be making at least $17 million in the ACC and you can bet your bottom dollar Marrone is making a competitive salary at Cuse.

They may also still be paying Fulmer's buyout.

no offense, but you are either truly delusional or just dont understand econmonics or the football culture if you think there is ZERO chance he leaves Syracuse.

a. his wife's family is from knoxville and they own land there
b. no matter how "cash strapped" tenn is, they have A LOT more money than syracuse. A LOT more money.
c. Coaches lie.

None of this means I THINK he is leaving. But I certainly want Tenn to fill its vacancy fast because if there is ever a job that COULD have mutual interest, this is it.

They should bring Fullmer back.
Just like the band Cinderella says, "don't know what ya got 'til it's gone."

In Fullmer's last 4 years (which includes his 2 only losing seasons), they went 29-21.
Since Fullmer's departure, they have gone 22-27 and had to face possible sanctions, thanks to Lane Kiffin.

After all the good Fulmer did there, he should have been given the chance to right the ship.

I probably fall closer to the delusional side. :)

Item (a) has nothing to do with football culture or economics, but it is the only thing I could see swaying Marrone. But by doing so, he would be admitting that he can't have his dream job because his wife won't let him.

I don't see either (b) or (c) as being possibilities and am confident enough that I would put money on it. Which means nothing because it's a useless wager.

Whenever somebody brings up his wife's family I have to laugh. BFD about that. It totally discounts where Marrone himself is from. Is Boots mad that he can't walk across the street to see his grandchildren? They are smart enough to know that if Marrone doesn't win enough to be able to coach there until he dies, he'll be moving back out of Knoxville within 3/4 years anyhow.

Money ain't everything to everybody and the Marrone's have plenty of money. And it sure doesn't seem like it's in Marrone's fiber to be chasing $$ signs.

Lying would also go against EVERYTHING Marrone stands for. There are two things in life most people hate - it's Liars and Thieves.

I dont think that Doug will leave as he just completed an extension. However if he was to leave it would be because of his wife. As we all know family is a huge draw and if Doug were to leave Tenn would be a fantastic fit for him. I dont see it but if he wants to or needs to put his wife above Syracuse i would support him 100%. Also Syracuse would be just fine. Sure it would be a blow but going to the ACC with a cupboard that is much more full than the waste land that Doug took over would be attractive to many coaches. It wouldnt shock me to see Shafer elevated. Either way we will be fine

Yes, the family aspect makes little sense to me. The chances of any coach being another Paterno, Bowden, Boeheim, Coach K, where they are lifers at a school are gone. So if he took the job he would be close to her family long enough for him to go 6-6 in his 3rd year and be fired.

I believe she's from Nashville, not Knoxville. It may be nitpicking but there's a pretty big difference.
