Siena Basketball: GMAC / Blackwell / AO

From another thread, the Lallys are apparently throwing their support around Hop,
And he appears to really want the job.

In the same thread, insiders claim that Gerry has made it known that he doesnt want the SU job now.

Aside from his current situation, I'd guess Gerry would defer if he knows Hop wants it.

Gerry is in a really good situation with Siena.
They love him there, his players love him and he has a good chance to take them to their first NCAAT appearance since 2010.
Great situation for a first time head coach.
I think he could handle the SU job even with the horrific state the team is in but I don't think he wants to step on Red's grave or go against Hop and Melo who clearly want Hop to get the job.
It is just too messy a situation, too much darn drama.
I have no doubt that he will get the chance to be the SU coach one day - just not now.

I know some of you know Gerry on a personal level if you want to give him some unsolicited advice this would be it….. If he wants a long future in coach and work his way up to the highest level he needs to find a real offense guy and get him on the staff. Offense is what is always going to hold JBs tree back and it will be no different from GMac. He has same struggles on that side of the ball as Hopkins and Red did. I think he has good natural instincts as a coach and I have seen him push the right button like JB did but but but but he needs to find an assistant coach and let him control the offense. Like Murray for UConn (clearly he can’t get Murray I am talking like Murray) he needs to find someone ASAP

Doty was… not efficient
Doty was ok 9 for 19 FG with 2 for 6 from three and 7 rebounds, 6-6 ft , 26 points - he’s the only one who played well and is far from a problem. Their 3 point shooter Coyle was 0-6 from 3. Their point guard was 3 for 12 fg and their entire bench was 3 for 12 fg. They also have a real issue with big men - Fairfield had 49 rebounds to Siena’s 24. Doty their 6’5” guard is by far their best rebounder - that’s a huge problem.

I think he needs to recruit better. He needs healthy good big men, a couple of 3 point shooters and a playmaking, driving point guard. When your 6’5” guard is your best rebounder, that’s an issue, You need talent to play a decent offense. When your starting 3 point shooter is shooting 27.5% from 3 for the year, no offensive scheme is going to fix that. When your tallest starter is 6’7” and you get outrebounded 49 to 24, switching up your offense isn’t the answer. GMac needs a recruiting boost and to get better players. It’s actually shocking he’s done this well with such obvious issues.

Getting better players spending more money isn’t the answer to everything. You need to have sound defensive and offensive systems for year after year success. His team gets after it defensively for the most part that is a good sign that he is a good motivator and kids want to play for him. He needs to get an innovative offensive mind on the bench and let him run the offense. Key to being a great coach is evolving and his offense needs to evolve. Red didn’t Hopkins never did. It’s fine you think otherwise we won’t agree just hoping the best for GMac and I feel that an offensive guru is needed for him to take the next level.

Siena just won their 20th game.
Second straight game without their big forward Chandler due to unexplained
NCAA eligibility issue.
Without his presence, they probably won’t get very far in the tournament
Cheers to Gerry - from 4 wins to 20 wins in just 2 years.
A fine achievement 😀
Amazing job by Gerry. He’s done wonders with Siena and has a very bright coaching future. Intensity, leadership and the ability to instill a vision and plan.

Cuse!

Chandler’s eligibility issue might have something to do with this being his 7th year playing college basketball.Just saying!

The team is extremely thin. Gerry only played seven today, but didn't sub in the 2nd half. Chandler was really playing well. Siena could really use his size and experience.

They have five days to figure it out. It's odd that this wasn't all set with the NCAA Clearinghouse and that it would come out so late in the season.
