And that Statement sums up GMAC and why he was such a great hire for Siena, and why SU should have at least considered him when they chose to hire Red.
And here we are 2 years later - Red about to be fired after his second losing season, Gerry taking a 4 win Siena team in 2 years to the MAAC championship game and 22 wins and counting.

Does anyone think Red could have done this at Siena? Anyone?
My guess is he would crow about going from 4 wins to 12 wins and saying we are making progress.

True winners have the "IT" factor and never say die attitude.
Red doesn't have it to be sure.
 
I recently re-watched that 2003 retrospective video from the PS, and you can tell from GMAC’s commentary that he has the toughness, tactics, and leadership our program is lacking. He will end up a major head coach. I hope we don’t miss our chance. We may not be present for the interviews, but just watching him in that documentary shows he has all the tools to succeed. Zero reservations about Gerry and whether he is ready for a major p4 job.

Who was your biggest overachiever on the court? Gerry McNamara.

If you were in a foxhole and your life was on the line, who would you want in the foxhole with you?
Gerry McNamara, the toughest guy that I have ever met.

You read my mind (or I read yours). I was just about to repost this.

A reminder of what Jim Boeheim thought of GMac and possibly why some have said JB favored Gerry to be his replacement. This is from 2013.

 
I was actually told by 2 people supposedly in the know that JB advocated strongly for GMAC to get the job.
He really believed he had the mental fortitude and never give up factor that good head coaches need.
What I was told is that Gerry had proven to JB that he was a winner through and through and that he would battle to the end to get the program back to where it was.

Now, those 2 people might have been talking crap to me. One never truly knows.
 
Things can change at a moments notice. Especially with a trip to the tournament and a run. But sounds like Gerry will do 1 more year at Siena before leaving.

interesting. maybe things AA has shown he may not have.

He should have made him lead assistant then instead of Red.

So, I am now thoroughly confused.

If you read Jake's post (FWIW, I believe Jake's posts are reasoned, thoughtful, informed and well-written, ergo, his posts are must-see TV for me) from 3/7 @ 7:27 AM, he states that JW intended to do a full blown search for a new HC but quickly realized that that was not going to be the case.

You state, and others have also posted - you are not the only one, that JB advocated strongly for GMAC.

Jake also posted, without specifiying who, that the hiring of Red involved, "many more people than people in athletics".

So, my question is: If JW wanted to do a full blown search, implying that he did not want to hire Red, and JB did not want JW to hire Red, then who was it that had more power than both the AD and the iconic coach combined to dictate that - I don't care what the AD and JB think is right, we are going to hire Red as our next head coach????

If I had to guess, the chancellor and the BOT just wanted to move on and put the whole distasteful ending of JB's tenure in the rear view mirror. The way JB left looked bad and disrespectful to the public at large and throwing his most experienced assistant into the job was their way to say - nothing else to look at here.

JW was right, there should have been a national search.
JB was right, GMAC was a much better candidate than Red.

But a national search would have taken time they were not willing to take.
And giving the head coaching job to GMAC instead of Red would have looked like JB got to pick his successor. Being annoyed that he held on for so long, I imagine that was the last thing they wanted to do.
 
Didn’t even see that Merrimack beat Marist by 1. Wow. Kind of a bad break for Siena. They woulda smacked Marist for a 3rd time
