We are barely even talking about the joy of college football here. So much soap opera dynamics. Not accusing anyone of anything. It's just the state of the program and it sucks. That non-performance at the Rutgers game really took the wind out of my SU sails.
I'd rather we were enthusiastically discussing how Alford catches anything thrown near him, or Gadsden always gets in space or Tucker might go for 200 on Sat. or some recruit who's interested in us cuz we're winning.
Nope. Instead we've got a great kid in TD who for whatever reason is not a DI-A gamer. We look askance at our coach for his dubious schemes/calls/recruiting. It's just the way it is right now, but it's been too long and seems hardly necessary.
The Rant:
Should never have fired Coach P, but aspirational Gross had visions of grandeur he was going to self-create. We were going to be USC East and involved in the "National" conversation. Coach P was so established with HS coaches (we had Ray Rice till they fired him). It's been a dismal run of bad luck. Hiring a guy (Robinson) who was out of his depth as a HC, the good and seemingly long term hire of Marrone dashed by his wife's dislike of CNY and NFL non-recruiting, Shafer (was supposed to be like the Coach P ascension) and then we land HCDB who appears to be on his way to something beyond adequate and somehow the keys are given to promising, but woefully underachieving QB - remember when TD threw that INT against Clemson in the Dome deep in Clemson territory right after Trill intercepted that pass to give us momentum before a full house. What was that and many other moments (the Maryland game that year?). Yes, much of this is self-inflicted and not all on TD. Plenty of dysfunction to go around. But from a long time fan's perspective this is simply rotten. Jake Crouthamel knew what he was doing. And yes, it was a different landscape then and maybe easier to navigate.
Remember when it was 3rd and long and you could anticipate a valiant and exciting attempt at making the first down, w/hungry, motivated and dynamic players? Now its all route tree business and check downs and uninspired attempts to achieve the objective of a first down. Hey, run around and play some ball out there.
Winning changes everything. I might think about a new hobby, cuz this is painful and kinda stupid. That not going for it on 4th down against Rutgers, just speaks volumes about faith in players, mindset of coaches and football as game to be clinically managed rather than a game to be riverboat gambled on occasion. Jesus, we were on Rutgers 42 yd line I think. Where's the advantage in gaining 18 yards and surrendering up the ball?
I liked it better when Coach Mac wore a suit and tie on the side lines. Oh wah. Thanks for the whine y'all.
