Southerland

What the hell was he doing at the end of the game?

It was dumb and classless in a rout. JB spent a few seconds talking to him about it prior to the team handshake

In observing James it seems that his level of maturity and social skills are below average. Oftentimes after he has made a shot or two he acts almost childlike with his glee and it can be noticed in his facial expressions and body language. I don't mean that in a derogatory sense but it's just an observation that I've made over the past several seasons. Not carrying oneself with an appropriate level of maturity can be reflected in the way he relates with his teamates and the way that he is perceived in the eyes of the coaching staff.
Although it's obvious that he has been in a slump shooting the ball from outside the arc, I've noticed a marked improvement when he puts the ball on the floor and drives toward the basket. He has shown what I feel is a surprising handle. I could see him stepping into KJ's role next year if he were to make some progress in the manner in which he carries himself and exuded a more mature and devoted attitude on the court. I don't think there can be any arguement in the fact that he has been blessed with some freakish athletic skills, but as often is the case great players not only are gifted athletically but also possess the ability to communicate, provide leadership, make prudent decisions and exude a certain persona which James has yet to demonstrate he has command over.

I got about half way through this and muttered, "What are you talking about?"

My wife and daughter are staring at me in stunned silence.

I remember when I tried to take a "verbal" poll on when the first meltdown would come. Oddly, I think it's coming after a blowout victory.

Are you kidding?

If anyone can read lips it was clear JB used the phrase "Jackass" when speaking directly to JS... Saying either "Don't be a jackass" or "You can't be a jackass."

Boeheim was bothered by it, and clearly apologized to the SJU staff as he made his was down the handshake line afterwards.

oh, is this your first time watching an SU basketball game? Boeheim is usually a lot more animated if he's upset. yes, he may have said "don't be a jackass" but if you have to resort to "reading his lips" to see if he's upset then he's not that bothered by it. and as I said, there may have been more going on there then we know. it just seems like such a cosmically inconsequential thing to get bothered by when the coach -- and I'll say this again -- was barely bothered by it.

JB was bothered by what James did - it was obvious he gave him a tongue lashing and apologized to SJ's coach. James was wrong. Hmm, however I do wonder if anyone will apologize for the classless signs etc and chants directed by SJU fans though at JB and the team?

Jb not only apologized to the SJU staff, he apologized to the player.

I'd be willing to bet that most of the other guys on the team think that James is a buffoon! You ever hear him in an interview? Sheesh...

It's not a team's right to have the defense stop playing regardless of how much you are down. If you want to run out the clock, dribble the ball and don't assume the other team will quit before the game is over just because you want to. In this game alone Boeheim was upset far more on a number of other plays. He gave JS about as minor an admonishment as he could.

i thought James should not have gone after the ball, but the sju player just kinda put it out there, bad idea but probably just dumb mistake.

... I also thought the sju player took a swing at JS...

Could somebody please share this with "twinight"

Apparently he thinks that unless JB gets demonstrative and goes all "Bobby Knight" while the cameras are on, then he's not upset.

There's no doubt in my mind that Southerland gets an earful away from the cameras and in the privacy of the locker room.

He didn't foul anybody:bang:The SJ Guy wasn't Guarding the Ball TS , He just went after the freaking Ball everybody makes a Big Deal of it.

Syracuse fans, at an away game, started a Let's Go Orange chant after Syracuse threw down 2 or 3 straight dunks to go up by about 3o with 8 minutes left. I think there is some kind of ironic and hypocritical disconnect here if you find the actions of James to be "classless" or "embarassing."

happens. JB handled it. In the grand scheme of things, it means nothing. Move on. People here arent happy unless they can find something to bitch about.

All you guys saying it was no big deal are the first to whine when Rugers' defensive linemen charge forward even though the QB is taking a knee and the offensive line is literally just standing in place.

Can't have it both ways.

St. Johns was admitting defeat and letting the clock expire as quickly as they knew how - by standing pat.

Southerland was in fact a jackass for trying to steal the ball up 25 with less than 3 seconds to go - And JB called him just that.

Stop trying to pretend is wasn't an a*hole move, because it was in every way, shape and form... Just like when Rutgers sends their D-Line full throttle after a QB who's taking a knee.

And what happens if the SJU kid punches Southerland and a brawl ensues... All of a sudden a few of our stars become involved and get injured or suspended?

That's why is was DUMB... you can't put your team in that position and by trying to steal the ball he increased such a possibility exponentially.

For the record, the SJU kid did take a swing (not a punch, but clearly an aggressive push back) at Southerland so my hypothesis isn't as farfetched as it seems.

To steal from David Gilmour...James had a momentary lapse of reason. Nothing more. Not even worth a thread.

It was a jackass move, but a momentarily lapse of judgement. Dirty isn't a dirty player, nothing he has ever shown would lead anyone to believe that. He is a goofball and made a goofy mental mistake. Personally, I'm more upset by the candy cane style black and white striped socks Southerland wore today. Between KJ's blue shoes, Dion's orange and black socks and JS socks today, its almost like the team is trying to one-up each other with the most ridiculous fashion statement.
