Southerland

And what happens if the SJU kid punches Southerland and a brawl ensues... All of a sudden a few of our stars get involved and get injured or suspended?
.

Classless sure. But it was still a basketball play in regulation. If that kid decides to react and start a brawl that is on him, not James.

tell that to all the whiners in here next time 'Cuse football takes a knee against Rutgers.

All you guys saying it was no big deal are the first to whine when Rugers' lineman charge forward even though the QB is taking a knee and the offensive line is literally just standing in place.

Can't have it both ways.

St. Johns was admitting defeat and letting the clock expire as quickly as they knew how - by standing pat.

Southerland was in fact a jackass for trying to steal the ball up 25 with less than 3 seconds to go - And JB called him just that.

Stop trying to pretend is wasn't an a*hole move, because it was in every way, shape and form... Just like when Rutgers sends their D-Line full throttle after a QB who's taking a knee.

That's why is was DUMB... you can't put your team in that position and by trying to steal the ball he increased such a possibility exponentially.

For the record, the SJU kid did take a swing as Southerland so my hypothesis isn't as farfetched as it seems.

It took 4 pages in this thread to find the winner. I agree completely. A huge deal? Perhaps not, but a j@&ass move under any definition. More importantly, I am in the minority here, but I do not think Southerland is very good. He is a designated shooter who really does not shoot that well, and a great athlete who is not quick and coordinated enough to use that athleticism to his advantage. I am glad he on the team and there is still upside, but if someone is going to fall out of the rotation I think it should be him.

Now imagine it was Louisville beating us 95-70...Scoop is holding the ball there to end the game...and a LVille guy knocks the ball out like that with 0.8 left... he would be public enemy #1 here for life.

To steal from David Gilmour...James had a momentary lapse of reason. Nothing more. Not even worth a thread.

A Pink Floyd mention was the only thing that made this thread tolerable. I can't believe a meltdown of this magnitude after a win, especially regarding something so minor. The only person at fault was the SJU player, who could have been called for a technical. I can't believe there's a 4 page thread trying to bury a guy for playing clean defense.

it is unbelievable how biased people are...it was clearly unsportsman-like, 5th graders would know that is a wrong thing to do up 25 with 3 seconds left...a big deal? no...but there is no reason to act like it wasn't bad etiquette...technically you can shout during someones back swing in golf with no penalty, yet everyone understands its something you don't do

Wow, how can you even see through those orange glasses?? The SJU player was at fault? They had conceded the game and were dribbling out the clock for 24 seconds... JSouth decides to snipe at the ball with 1 second left up 25 points?? Why didnt he make the play 8 seconds earlier as he was standing there, hands on hips? Its bushleague... know when to admit an SU player is in the wrong. Its ok and doesnt make you a bad fan.

what's all this blather and bluster about some cockamamie concept called good sportsmanship?

People are reacting like we just beat an 0-23 Towson...We just took a fairly decent (and hard playing) team to the woodshed. We play like we did today in March and we are going to win a title.

you realize there's a smidge of difference between a football play and a basketball play, yes?

Maybe with you. I wouldn't care about someone trying to take a ball away. I'd be more concerned with the 25 point loss.

Or jack up a 3

I love Scoop-a-loop. I love everything he has meant to our program. I love the leader and teammate he has become. Really what is not to like? Everything I say about him is just in jest...

huh? jb barely seemed bothered by it at all. perhaps... and I know this is hard for some on this board to believe... we don't know the whole story from our vantage point?
That's right, we don't know the whole story. There's no way to know what was being said on the court or what may have happened previously involving Southerland.

Until I hear otherwise, I'll give Southerland a pass as the incident seemed completely out of character for him.

Watch the replay... He clearly called him a jackass.

There's no mistaking "jackass" with "good effort" or any other compliment.

In observing James it seems that his level of maturity and social skills are below average. Oftentimes after he has made a shot or two he acts almost childlike with his glee and it can be noticed in his facial expressions and body language. I don't mean that in a derogatory sense but it's just an observation that I've made over the past several seasons. Not carrying oneself with an appropriate level of maturity can be reflected in the way he relates with his teamates and the way that he is perceived in the eyes of the coaching staff.
Although it's obvious that he has been in a slump shooting the ball from outside the arc, I've noticed a marked improvement when he puts the ball on the floor and drives toward the basket. He has shown what I feel is a surprising handle. I could see him stepping into KJ's role next year if he were to make some progress in the manner in which he carries himself and exuded a more mature and devoted attitude on the court. I don't think there can be any arguement in the fact that he has been blessed with some freakish athletic skills, but as often is the case great players not only are gifted athletically but also possess the ability to communicate, provide leadership, make prudent decisions and exude a certain persona which James has yet to demonstrate he has command over.
Thank you, Doctor Phil.

I really can't believe this is being dissected in such a way. wow

I would like to dissect if further, as in, how the heck did James not even come away with that ball? Are his hands covered in vaseline?

Not the end of the world but he clearly looked very foolish. It's funny, the walk-ons knew enough to lay back.

Neither here nor there but I don't understand why teams don't keep playing in the last 30 seconds of a blowout. That's usually walk-on time and you end up taking away from their brief chance at getting some action.

You missed the closeup on television when JB was in his face. Not going nuclear, but letting him know he wasn't a big fan of the move.

I just saw the game highlights on ESPN and I can't believe they didn't show this! I would have thought any play that generates a 70 post thread would be important enough to make the highlights. Oh wait...

I missed what happened? Can someone explain?

As SJU (Harrison, I believe) was running out the clock around mid court, Southerland stepped in as he was about to hand the ball to the ref with 1 second life trying to steal it. Harrison pushed him out of the way, rightfully so, and the refs blew the whistle to settle the minor "dispute" briefly.

Just a stupid play by Southerland, and everyone here knows it.

If it was Harrison who did that to Triche, people here would be saying how classless it was. Just like if Dominique Jones threw down a windmill at the end of the game instead of Flynn when we played USF. Everyone read Otto's post--he is spot on here.

And of course if an opposing player did it then it would have generated 270 posts. He's not going to be brought up on charges but he looked foolish. Watch a replay on it and he's drifting over as if he's disinterested then tries to steal the ball. Awesome effort by SU today. That's clearly the main story. But I betcha you never see JS or any other current SU player try that again.
