Spring 2018 Depth Chart

I like that the spring depth chart allows us to talk about the upcoming season, BUT I believe most of us are reading way into a basically meaningless depth chart (myself included lol).

Josh Black is pulling his car AND Shamarko Thomas's car.

When I was a student I used to watch Tebucky Jones ride his bicycle up the East Adams St hill up to Thorndon Park and this brought back memories. Incredible leg strength and conditioning. Love these kinds of tidbits.

Cordy was going to be the punt returner last year. a lot easier to be that guy from the WR spot than it is our safety running the D. Hope it works out,

How is it easier?

also WR much less physical position.. on D you have contact almost every play.

If you're a WR, you're coming off of a break. If you're a DB you stay on the field to return the punt.

Ok, so which is easier? I'm confused. Upper stated it was easier for the WR to come back on the field and get lined up rather than the DB/Safety to peddle back.

I don't agree with that at all. If I'm a DB, I'm either getting blocked by that WR or I'm running down a lane with him. Unless that DB is involved in the tackle, then the contact is even.

If you told me yesterday that a true freshman would show up as a first stringer on defense in the Spring chart, I would have bet my house that it was Trill Williams and not Andre Cisco.

I'm all in on Trill Williams. I think the reason Cordy moved is because of the young talent we have coming up behind him. Obviously, from a physical standpoint, and the length that is needed for this defense played a role, but I truly believe Trill is going to play and possibly even start from day 1. The kid has the size (after seeing him in person I was really impressed for a HS DB), and the athleticism. It will come down to him getting the defense down, which is something I don't see having a problem. I really think they are clearing the way for Trill. The athleticism and size a Trill/Foster secondary gives us is pretty exciting.

he is a safety not a corner.

True , this chart is set up to motivate and send a message to alot of players telling them that the coaches will play Santa Claus if necessary. I like the DC. never thought cordy was an ACC safety and hope he excels in the slot.

Doesn't Cordy have 2 years left, he was injured early the last 2 years...?

Am I nuts?

I think he does , hell, lets make like BYU and start playing 25 yos

I will need to see Foster improve about 40 pecent. Im more worried about him than Trill.

Interesting metric, how will you determine what the actual % is?
No idea but he definitely needs to drastically fix his angle tackling. He also isn’t a heat seaking missile nor a ball hawk with a innate ability to jump the ball. I see someone robotic in his process of where to be and what to do. I would love whighams opinion on him. Don’t get me wrong I heard he is a good kid. He isn’t a natural safety so far. That’s why I came up with 40 percent better. Hoping he surprises us.

He played well until he Got dinged and slowed up the last few games.. I agree though he took some bad angles that really hurt him on some plays

Linebacker sure looks strange.

Maybe they shifted Cordy to receiver to keep him healthy. Did Dino really say that he hit too hard to play defense?

Tyrone Perkins at safety?

Lost the entire second unit of DBs to transfer -- had to move Perkins (and Stritzinger) to have enough DBs for Spring practice. Perkins wasn't going to see the field at RB or in the slot, so this gives him an opportunity.

Yes -- Dino said Cordy had a better chance of staying healthy at receiver. Have to see if Cisco and Clarke can handle the safety spot (or a grad transfer?).

Linebacker -- what is strange? Guthrie was an inside LB in jucos; Armstrong worked at the Wil last season; Whitner moved to LB last season. Put the 3 upperclassmen in the top spots, let the competition play out.

What I meant by 'strange', (probably the wrong word), was it was strange not to see the guys who have manned those positions the last few years there. I know why they aren't there. It's just all the new faces after that had been the most stable unit on the team.

What is strange is to move your best DB over to offense when we lost the entire second unit of DB's to transfer. it will be interesting to see how long the Cordy to offense experiment lasts.

I guess it all comes under the heading of transforming the depth chart with the guys Babers has recruited to play his system. I hope it works- it's got to.

I think you’re right.

But I don’t think it’s strange to move Cordy at all. He made it tough on both staffs to keep him off the field - but make no mistake - his size is a huge detriment. Getting injured helps in that they can move him for another legit reason.

The players taking his spot are bigger and more prototypical for the position in any D1 system - much less the system we run. We did the best with Martin back there (rangy and tall).

Babers seemed, I don't know, not all that committed to the idea of another grad transfer. I know he keeps everything close to the chest, but I got the vibe that they're going to go with what they got this year. I have nothing to base this on, just gut reaction.
