Spring 2018 Depth Chart

I think you’re right.

But I don’t think it’s strange to move Cordy at all. He made it tough on both staffs to keep him off the field - but make no mistake - his size is a huge detriment. Getting injured helps in that they can move him for another legit reason.

The players taking his spot are bigger and more prototypical for the position in any D1 system - much less the system we run. We did the best with Martin back there (rangy and tall).
No doubt. Before he was injured, Martin was a difference maker - fast enough to help on deep routes and athletic enough to disrupt the play. Invaluable, but also gone.

So as excited as I am to see Cordy catching passes, the bigger question is ... will his FS replacement (Andre "thong" Cisco, Devon Clarke?) be good enough to keep him in the slot?

Babers seemed, I don't know, not all that committed to the idea of another grad transfer. I know he keeps everything close to the chest, but I got the vibe that they're going to go with what they got this year. I have nothing to base this on, just gut reaction.
The roster stands at 80, I believe, including the 2 transfers who can't play in 2018, so basically 78 scholarship players. Not ideal. There are obvious positions that could use help if the next Etta-Tawo or Jordan Martin is out there, and interested.
My gut reaction (and based on what happened in the last cycle) is the staff is evaluating and reaching out, depending on who wants to come here. And they won't talk about it at all until there is something definite.

I still haven’t seen that buttgers all big ten safety kit heater has found a home.

Having only 80 players isn’t good but I also wouldn’t want to fill the gaps with blisters. short timers
would be better.

I don't agree with that at all. If I'm a DB, I'm either getting blocked by that WR or I'm running down a lane with him. Unless that DB is involved in the tackle, then the contact is even.

Wide receivers don't play in run support. They don't blitz and get hit by 300 pound linemen.

Unfortunately whether or not they can play the roster is at 80. Plus now that there is no backdating and it appears that Ellis and Welch were part of the 2018 class there are only three open scholarship spots. If they want to bring in more players, besides those three spots, it would have to be grad transfers or walk ons.

Lots of ways to fill those 5 spots. Grad transfers obviously, and March-April is the time for that. Prospects who were not "recruited athletes" by SU in this cycle (the way they landed Ellis & Welch last year, nominally as PWOs). Jucos who might still be available -- counting against the 25 limit.

This staff is resourceful. In the last cycle, after signing day, they found jucos ( Berry and Robinson at DE) and grad transfers (Valdez, Martin). Those four moved into the two deep, and Robinson emerged as an impact defender.

So, those 5 spots provide a significant opportunity.
