The FSU game is clearly one of the most important games in recent memory. A win results in a presumptive bowl appearence, more national coverage, additional recruiting “buzz”, increased attendance and great forward momentum.

At the same time, there are no such things as “must-win” games. A former coach once gave me great advice about these types of games - “don’t win because we need to, win because we CAN”. We all know that Syracuse can win this game - now it is time to deliver and get back on the national radar.

Couple of quick notes:

- This is going to be a tough game for FSU, playing at noon in the Carrier Dome, with a new coaching staff and defensive coordinator. Playing in their third game under the new FSU staff and clearly still getting used to a new defensive scheme, expect Dino to use the ultra-tempo, multiple formations and lots of misdirection to take advantage of the lack of general gap discipline in the FSU defense. This is where the 3rd year in the system and senior QB plays MAJOR dividends.

- I expect a fair amount of quick screens to open up seam passes to Ravian Pierce - which thus far has not been a large part of the offense.

- I doubt that Willie Taggart believes he can materially slow down the Syracuse offense. I expect him to fling the ball deep (and even force the ball deep) fairly often and then mix in well-timed of HB screen passes as the safeties over-compensate to maintain proper depth to rectify the issues on 9-routes we saw at WMU. LB’s must focus very closely on their keys in this game or you will see BIG gains in the screen game.

- Really excited to see what Custis can do against FSU. When you go against really fast corners, those big guys that can catch the ball when covered are so valuable. I expect Nykeim Johnson to play a big role in this game at some point in the screen game and on reverses.

- One thing that makes me feel good about this game is the special teams play. Typically, the speed and depth on special teams is skewed greatly in favor of FSU. Not sure that this is the case this year, as Custis, Cullen and L. Williams among others are as good as it gets at their roles. Have been really impressed in this area. Cullen in particular - JR Johnson part 2.

- I expect a lot of Dungey runs. Lots of mid-line zone reads and read-options to set up the RPO.

- I also expect a LOT out of the D-Line. We know these guys can get after it when the adrenaline hits and they are playing in the Dome and on turf (ask Kelly Bryant from Clemson).

- The defense has to play extremely discliplined and passive. Strong gap-control and zone discipline to force FSU to sustain drives and give the front-four time to get after Francois. To me, the LBs will have a major impact on SU’s ability to win this game as they are going to have to control the run game without a ton of safety support.

Finally, we know that Syracuse under Dino has been able to RISE UP in these big games. I expect Dungey to will Syracuse to victory behind a very strong offensive showing that ultimately showcases the Babers offense in full.

Looking forward to Saturday.

You think Pierce’s limited involvement vs WMU and Wagner was by design? Maybe saving him as an under the radar attacker over the middle for FSU? Just not sure why he’s recieved so few looks this season other than the fumble

Great post. Here are 5 of my big items for tomorrow, in no order.

1. Limit FSU big plays especially early. Seems obvious right? That's the plan every game, but we have a knack especially in these big home games, of destroying our crowd early on. Can't happen.

2. Line of scrimmage. FSU o-line is banged up. We need a consistent pass rush. On the other side, we need our line to do enough to allow Dungey time, and the backs some room to get positive yards as much as possible.

3. Special teams. SU has a big advantage here. FSU kicking game is struggling. Need this to continue, any game can come down to a simple (easy for me to say) FG.

4. Eric Dungey intensity. We need it, but as always, must be careful with anything over the top. Such a weapon... the team simply feeds off of it. Rest up tonight my friend. We need A+ Eric out there.

5. The crowd. Rock that place!

Not worried about that. Death, taxes, and Dungey kneeing defenders in the face. It is known.

Spot on about special teams. Per ESPN efficiency ratings (only after 2 games, so take it with a giant pinch of salt) has us:

Offense: #31
Defense: #76
ST: #2

FSU
Offense: #117
Defense: #42
ST: #127

Our D vs their O is the classic resistible force vs moveable object battle - let’s hope we’re the less bad of those 2 things tomorrow.

Yup, and it's not just early in the game that matters. How we come out after halftime is going to be big too.

100% yes.

I can’t imagine this not being the case after rewatching his useage, while Dungey was in, vs WMU.

He’s that potential “best player on the field” often and we have him by the collar right now. He’s the most undervalued card from the clemson games winning hand.

#1 Key, 60 minute game.

Up 17-0 on USF, lost 45-3 the rest of the way.

Up 38-21 on Wake last year, lost 43-5 the rest of the way.

Up 35-7 on WMich, outscored 35-21 the rest of the way.

Getting up big early is NO guarantee of a win with the pace of this offense. Just like conservative punt fest is seen as a way of keeping both teams in it, no lead is safe with the pace of this offense if it doesn't finish drives.

#2, keep Dungy clean.

When I start to feel good about the game, I remember that every Syracuse player will be matched up against someone who was more highly recruited. I recognize that there is far more to college football than recruiting talent, but it’s still a sobering thought.

This is my new favorite weekly segment.

I really hope we can stay upright for the season. A season ending good BC against good Syracuse is a great thing for the ACC and northeast football. Brings back the good memories.

Pierce has not been a featured part of the game plan in either of the first two games. He had opportunities in the initial 2 games but not as a first option - and because the progressions never needed to develop (because initial options were generally open) - he did not get any touches.

I think it's also important how we finish each half... and how we play in between the starts and finishes.

My only concern is that Willie torched us with USF a few years ago
