SU Athletic Director Candidates

As another POV I actually think that can be a good thing in leadership (as someone who has been in executive leadership roles for awhile now). Having concrete plans sometimes puts us in a box and forces us to want to be right rather than DO right (if that makes sense). Having a good plan but willing to listen to changes and updates is a positive... but again just a rosy colored POV lol. Being a true leader is about listening first.
I recently accepted a new position within my company managing hundreds of people. I have no plan yet. Looking for guidance from my direct reports to determine what our priorities need to be. Just because someone is an internal hire it doesn't mean they are aware of everything yet.

We should all watch closely today if Ditota, Waters, Axe, or even Paulie and Stevie bring up the DO article on Lykes. It's concerning to me that I have not heard a peep from any of them on Lyke even from a scandal at Pitt perspective even before this article, maybe I've missed some but you all can correct me.

I'm not even saying they need to give some expert opinion or we should care that much about what they think but no mention at all or silence just is very worrisome.

That tells me they're worried about pissing off Lyke or Haynie which in turn prob means that they really think there is chance Lykes could be the new AD.

If Lykes was really not in contention I would think some or all them would be piling on her like we're doing now to get her out, but I haven't seen that yet.

Yea, this is a problem.

Has anyone bothered to elbow Carlson or any of the writers directly? Gotta love a newspaper that only reports news when it is convenient or self-serving.

Edit: also why in an era of budget cuts and declining enrollment is academia adding extra layers of high paid bureaucracy?
A friend of mine was in an admin position at one of the schools at SU and was privy to some salaries. It was eye opening at how cavalier some people were with money for their staff, quite a few "do little, paid a lot" jobs.

Yep which is exactly why I was wondering about the context of the comment. Anyone whose been in a similar position goes through that transition be it internally or moving to an external opportunity.

Academia seems more and more like a jobs program for champagne socialists with stupid majors and limited skills.

Yeah, it was more so a "I will be coming into this role listening, first"

I don't think so but gotta be honest I was surprised he admitted that he doesn't have a concrete plan on dealing with some of the issues SU is facing.

EDit

Good point - took that nugget from dot com.

Article said something like no specific plans on addressing those issues yet. Strategic plan will be developed.
He said he wants to listen to all interested groups in the next few months to determine what direction THEY think the University should go. He’s a true leader.

There is a whole ecosystem built around students that become Grad students then Grad assistants and then doctorates and then professors and then deans and then administrators.

Some of them never having actually had a real job in the world.

And in my experience dealing with them, they also tend to think they're the smartest people in every room. This is obviously overgeneralization, but this stereotype has a hint of truth.

TBH I haven't even thought about this angle. We all know that Syr dot com loves to bash the SU athletic department, and that they haven't taken the opportunity yet, which in this case does seem worrisome. Some in the know here have hinted she's no longer the hire, but I need to see it with my own eyes. Dino burned me with his belief without evidence speeches.

Or, they have higher journalistic standards, and need to confirm with more sources before publishing. They also probably are trying to get quotes and more usable information so they're no regurgitating the same article that the Daily Orange wrote.

It's pretty clear to me that this was an intentional leak straight to the DO for that reason.

Nothing more insufferable than a conversation with a PHD student in one of the Liberal Arts - Philosophy, Classics, etc.

Had one at my home over the holidays - nobody else got a word in ha.

Agree. Let's see how it plays out...

Well stated. For the grief that both Mike and Donna get, they really are excellent at their jobs. True professionals. They will always vet and double vet before they publish a story. It’s their reputations on the line. And it’s the absolute right thing to do. Far easier to publish potentially questionable content when you are a student newspaper than when you are the published news source of an entire region.

This is a pretty ill-informed comment. Administrative bloat is real at universities, that’s very true, but that’s connected to the intrusion of corporate values into the academic space. There are fewer actual teachers, academics and researchers than ever before if you know the data. Fewer tenure track positions and more adjuncts teaching students than ever. Universities are supposed to be about learning.

Okay. The Post Standard had the story. But it was sent anonymously and the allegations against Lyke were also sent anonymously. That doesn't reach the journalistic standards of any newspaper. The Daily Orange decided to go with the story regardless of that. Fact. They are not in the least worried about pissing off anyone at Syracuse University. You might not have been around for the out of bounds series they ran back in the early 90's. It set our program back. If they have the goods, they will print and not think twice about who doesn't like it.

I worked with an IT person that demanded to be called Doctor on all their meetings because they had 12 years of IT schooling. They didn't last long and that was even before AI would've for sure erased their job.

High School Principal got his "Doctorate" at a now defunct mail order degree joint. Insisted that everyone call him Dr. Pompous A--.

They reported on the existence of a complaint and the outcome of it. Given she's a candidate in a high profile AD search and she was just named in another lawsuit involving her role as an AD, seems relevant to me. Even HR (which exists to protect a business or a school, not aid the person complaining) determined there was merit in speaking with HL about her behavior.

The real story to me is what was going on that you had two people basically playing the role of AD -- strikes me as incompetence on the part of the chancellor to do this.

If anything JW is looking like someone that was dealt a bad hand...How much worse things could've been if JW wasn't here blocking whatever Kent full agenda was is a great question.

The problem is her law school classmate from the ultra prestigious University of of Akron law school. That’s the link to the cronyism
I’m afraid Syracuse Law is now ranked similar to Akron Law. What a disgrace

Thanks Richmond was responding the same.

I actually don't think it's incompetence from Kent, I think it's just plain ego and cronyism like someone said above.

Dude is pushing 70, was in power for 12 years at SU and now was trying to make the cards fall right for Lyke. Thought he could just set up his successors everywhere prob before he left.

AND he's not even retiring, onto Michigan ha. I don't know what it is with that generation, they just want to stay in a position of power until they're dead.
