SU Human Resource Complaint Towards Heather Lyke

I don't know that KS was power hungry but clearly mostly an academic type who wasn't experienced enough in running a business, which a university is. As dasher described to us in his posts awhile back about his attempt to get KS and AW together, it isn't clear that KS actually does anything himself. For example others screen his calls and email. As I believe llandz said awhile back after meeting with KS, he said he doesn't decide what to do, others decide that for him. Or something like that. I've been told the same thing by people I know who have had interactions with him. I have a sense that Haynie will operate very differently. As a Ph.D. and professor in entrepreneurship (sp?) I expect he won't have things decided for him but will run his own ship. He'll be making decisions a directing actions I suspect. In fact in one of his interviews he said he answers his own emails and attempts to get back to people within 24 hours. A breath of fresh air.
That is NOT what I said. He is told which people to visit with when he is travelling out of town. It is based on who is important to have a visit. He is not told what to do. That is not true at all.

You guys have to read between the lines…”she would not discuss her candidacy” = she knows she’s not getting the job.
So who’s her audience for this article? Is she just putting this out there to get another AD job? Why would or should the Syracuse community care if she knows she’s out of contention? Just very strange to me.

They were doing the article already. So she participated in an interview. If she hadn’t participated, they probably focus more on the issues at Pitt vs what she had been doing at Syracuse.

Are they serious? We are giving this clown a platform to campaign for the job? GTFOH
She walked in the Post Standard to defend herself. What bothers me is why Syracuse University helped her to do this. The paper was 100% correct in writing her story. I just hope (really hope) that this was just an attempt to help her save her career by the school rather than greasing any skids.

Sorry. I mis-remembered. But when I read it I thought it was consistent with what I'd otherwise heard about how he operated.

100%. I would add Herm into the mix of being forced out as well. He originally was only supposed to be here for 3 years. That turned into 15. He poured a lot to the university and dealt with a lot of BS behind the scenes. He could have very easily said it im out like Coyle..

One thing that does give me solace is there seems to be some familiarity with Hodgson and Carparelli.

I think Kent is a power hungry dork and I’m glad to see him leave.
Herm was planning to retire. The only issue was he wanted to retire July 1. He wasn't alowed to do that.

But it’s just HER SIDE of the story. Every ambiguity is resolved in her favor. They allowed her to take credit for the success of the minor sports. Rooster-sunrise. Apparently did not press on how she was fired. “Why do you think Pitt president lost confidence in your leadership?” “Why did you raise only 5% of the cost of your ambitious athletic facility? Why did you extend Capel at a premium? The female students said you heard the complaints against the coach; are they lying?
Really a disgraceful effort by Donna. By hey guuurl power.

Really hope Haynie doesn't stumble thru these easy hurdles out of the gate and faceplant by hiring her as AD.

It would be proof-positive of tone deafness in his Chancellor's office and BOT towards the fans and a big red X on Haynie's tenure from the get-go, IMHO. (along with being a really dumb hiring move .)

Would be a TERRIBLE first decision on the job to hire her as AD. Hopefully he's smart enough to sidestep an unforced error of this magnitude (especially with the much better candidates that have already interviewed.) If he's not, good Lord ...

I will take the word of what has been reported the past couple of days. She may still have a position in the athletic department but it won’t be AD. Maybe Herm’s old position.

I’ll be absolutely stunned if she’s still in Syracuse in July. In fact, I’m VERY confident she won’t be.

She’s completely radioactive. Good riddance

“A December human resources complaint alleged Heather Lyke, a high-ranking advisor and candidate for Syracuse University’s next director of athletics, directed “employees to disregard instructions given by our department’s top leader” and overstepped “the appropriate boundaries of her role.”

Let the games begin…

Forgive me if this article was already posted.

Is there a reason why you are even bringing this up? I thought all of our insiders had indicated Nick is the guy. Are you suddenly hearing different?

She’s an employee of SU? Was she fired? Should they not defend her.

This school is something

I just worried...

I hope it's Carparelli, of course, but never say never until it's announced.

The dysfunction on the hill is known.

Why is the administration propping her up and Donna doing a pro-Lyke piece this weekend ?? (with the AD announcement coming Mon or Tues.)

Yes, I am concerned and will be until Carparelli is announced.

From what I've read on a couple of social media sites, there will be a lot of unhappy alumni if she gets the job. Way above my pay grade to figure this stuff out but from what I've been reading, hiring her would be a big mistake...but what do I know.

Ive lost much respect for donna

The more I see how JW’s “retirement” unfolded the more it reveals just how dysfunctional Kent’s leadership team and the whole university is/was.

Not totally surprising because universities are generally a groupthink mess where typical top down decision making is circumvented. Having said that two things just completely jump out at me.

Coyle definitely jumped ship because he realized that he didn’t really control areas that should have been in his control. Especially the replacement of JB. Which leads me to the second point…

The hiring of Red involved many more people than people in athletics. I think JW’s original intent was to do a full blown search, but he quickly realized that was not going to be the case. His messaging to boosters changed to support the inevitable “internal hire”. I honestly don’t think he had much decision making power here at all. But JW loves the school, loves its athletics and spent ten years trying to position it the best he could. Now he’s being forced out.

I wish Carparelli the best. It looks like the pieces are falling into place for what seems to be a series of solid decisions. But I caution that it also appears the choice of Head BB coach is being made for him…just something I’d keep an eye on..,
As you note, the dysfunction is not just on the athletic side. I've shared some stories with people and they don't even believe they could be true (but they are). Look at how many provosts (chief academic officers) there have been in the past 10 years - that's not normal. That's why it's odd they elevate the #2 in a dysfunctional organization to #1. Hoping for the best, but concerned.
