SU vs UAlbany (70-73): Wed Nov 20, 7 PM

She has been screaming to all who will listen that she needs NIL support. I imagine she’s frustrated by that, but it’s going to be very hard for schools like SU to compete across the board anymore, as there are only so many donors and a lot of sports to support. That said, it still is a bad thing to say publicly.

I casually follow the team and won’t comment on coaching or player effort since I didn’t watch but what I will say is I’m concerned about Women’s sports within the NIL landscape. I’m sure that they will be left behind unfortunately. I’ll be interested to see how Title IX impacts the equality of NIL when it’s brought in house. If it does at all. Sadly NIL dollars will go where the most eyes are focused on which is Football and men’s hoops. Right or wrong, that’s where the focus needs to be over the next 5 years. Things are changing, we need to make our best effort in improving those sports to get the next seat at the table if it’s even possible. I understand FLJ is frustrated, but taking it out on fans never ends well.

This is a very relevant article regarding attendance that was just posted 10 days ago. Gives good context on the matter of how SU fan support compares to other ACC teams. Shows that, with all thing equal regarding stadium size, we're right in the middle of the conference. The problem being that we play in a massive (even for MBB) arena. I love FLJ and have gone to many games, but she's just dead wrong here. How did she expect the attendance would look after the season starting out how it has? MBB is no different, the fan support for them has been bad for their standards.

While I believe her when she says that they can't complete with NIL, there's no excuse for her to not be able to put out at least an adequate product. Do we really believe that outside of the biggest WBB programs, all these programs are spending big on players? I'm sure without adequate NIL funding we're unlikely to be a contender, but she should still be able to field a good team. In a sport that is not known to be a high priority to boosters, I refuse to believe all these other schools players are all getting paid big.

Eh, never good when you start criticizing fans. I know she is frustrated but this is definitely a surprise at her reaction. Be better than that. Maybe it was to try to light a spark under her team. This team just isnt very good and last night there were some questionable coaching decisions that were made.

The dome is an awful arena for the women to play in. Zero home court advantage. I wish they kept manley and made it their own. The game was on a Wed night against Albany. It does not scream must go up there.

Hopefully she apologizes to the fan base who actually supports them.

That's a good example but even Indiana took time to build and get the crowds. From a March 2024 article I just googled:

"Attendance has grown substantially under Teri Moren. In her first season at IU in 2014, the average attendance per game was 2,609.

By the 2021-22 season, IU moved up to an average of 4,726 fans per game, and a year ago that average jumped to 8,104."
Right. Winning matters.

Always hated when coaches come after fans for not showing up. It’s hard and expensive to come to games. She had 2,000 fans there last night (likely less with seasons included) but that’s not nothing. While I understand her frustration don’t think the message is right.
Actually women’s tickets are quite inexpensive. General admission season tickets are $99 and the lowest courtside ones are $200.

Wednesdays night, non-conference game, school tryouts and practices began this week. Seems like a strange night to be mad about attendance.

This hasn't gone unheard by the powers that be. There are some big donors that have stepped up in recent weeks for the women's hoops team, it just doesn't get publicized. It won't help this year's team, however.
Very good to hear. I like FLJ a lot. I hope she gets her help. I have contributed to her team personally as well.

Love the fight from FLJ in the press conference and telling it like it is. She has to apologize for nothing. Guess what people are talking about the program today that weren’t yesterday. That’s what she needs to do to wake up the fan base and get support. The harsh truth is that the momentum on the football side may have indirectly hurt any momentum FLJ could’ve had this past offseason with fundraising and getting someone that can replace Fair production.

I still can’t believe she went there.

They played ALBANY. If we played UConn and had a 12-0 record with 400 fans… fine. But midweek Albany around Thanksgiving week? Give me a break.

All the more reason to shut up. If anything, her comment is the “Get A Life” moment for me. Tough to come back from.

I’ll add that there is ZERO excuse to lose to Albany. Zero. In any sport SU plays outside of MLAX and even then there’s zero excuse. Look in the mirror Coach.

Good article and thoughts.

The other issue I think that Coach Jack is missing is that she's pinning for support and attendance that has never existed in the first place. I know she's frustrated about the lack of NIL and I get that 100% but women's bball has always had niche support at best. It's not like SU was drawing 10-12K fans for a game a decade ago. I get she wants a lot more fans attending but the problem is those "fans" don't exist at least not currently.

Good points. When I was at SU, literally nobody went to anything other than men’s basketball, football and men’s lacrosse.

What is the team doing to help the situation? Are they getting out on campus promoting their games to students? Are they showing support for all other sports like soccer and field hockey, to get them to come to their games?

Rhetorical questions - they may be doing these things. But if they’re not, I’m not sure why she’s so upset.

I dont live up there so dont go to womens games. But do they actually offer the whole 30K in seating capacity like they do for mens?

If so, wonder if they would consider only selling a smaller area? 2K is not enough but if they can get to the 5-6k range, and compress that on the 1st level seats, may feel a lot more robust

No, lower level is the only level open. I was there with my daughter last night it felt super dead. Midweek game against what should be an inferior opponent will never draw well. Hopefully they get a nice crowd for Notre Dame and the Kayla Alexander ceremony, but that game may be real ugly.

The point is that those fans don't exist not because there aren't plenty of Syracuse fans or even Syracuse basketball fans specifically - it's that the majority of fans take men's basketball seriously and do not do the same for women's, despite them being level in terms of results for quite some time now. I know it's not something anyone wants to hear, least of all on the fan messageboard populated by the few people actually paying attention, but there's an element of misogyny at play there. People look for reasons to tune out from the women's team, while they give the men's team a far larger benefit of the doubt. "That sucked, see you next game lol" vs "That sucked, I'll watch when they actually show something."

And before anyone says that it's the shorter height and lack of dunks in the women's game - I don't think lowering the rim to 9' would suddenly see the teams drawing equal crowds.

I'm sorry, but FLJ is a passionate coach and had some choice words on the court during the game. This team has some issues but should not have lost to Albany or St. Joe's. I truly believe she's looking to light a fire under someone's ass but it's not the fans who show up. A frustrating loss for her and her team, I believe she's trying to wake up some folks but lost her cool during the presser. She gets a pass as one should, especially someone that cares so deeply about the team and what they produce on the court.

I'll give her a pass -- and I do think her frustration with the team, which is clearly better than losing to Albany (St. Joe's is legit good), boiled over.

The Athletic Department needs to rent the Onondaga War Memorial for the women’s hoops team. Having attended hundreds of Syracuse Crunch games this venue would give the team a great hold court advantage. If they only draw 3000 fans a game there would be 3000 empty seats not 39,000.

Another option would be to play at the Expo Center at the NYS Fairgrounds.

War Memorial over the Expo Center, there is nothing out there in State Fair land. At least with the War Memorial you have the downtown venues.
