Syracuse football defensive tackle Steven Clark's career put in jeopardy by blood clots

Looks like the Michigan newspapers. So basically our guys say blood thinners and that's the DQ and WMU says no? I don't follow the Miami Heat, how similar is this to Chris Bosh?
Yeah. DiFino had stated that Steven should be on Xarelto for an extended period of time. Years, basically. Ewing, Stucky, Kouides, the specialist in Kalamazoo, and the WMU docs said nope. DiFino changed his mind once he'd consulted with Kouides.

Anyways, bottom line is that Steven is NOT on an anticoagulant.

From what I understand he was initially put on blood thinners by the SU doctors. Then was taken off of them. Worked out during the Spring, no blood thinners. Then when he went in for a subsequent follow up he was told he should go on them again. He isn't on blood thinners.
Yep.

Gotcha, thanks for the clarification. And that's one of those deals where once you're off its off I would think.

The Syracuse.com article yesterday in a different thread said Steven is on blood thinners. Is that true? Doesn't take much of a search to see the precautions taken if so.

Athletes and Blood Clots

That is an interesting article. Especially as it seems to imply that there is no reason that an athlete can't go back to playing after having a blood clot.

From the text message you posted, it seemed that Difino saw evidence that there was still a clot in Steven's system, and he wanted him to continue the blood thinners for 9-12 more months. Kouides disagreed with the treatment and felt the clot would dissolve on its' own without blood thinners.

Am I interpreting this correctly?

Just saw your question as to how similar this is to Chris Bosh's situation. I have no idea. It seems like Bosh's clots are unprovoked; I'm basing this on what little I've read about his situation. Steven's was provoked by the brace.

So WMU's head physician reviewed over 250 pages of medical documents from appropriate "specialists" regarding Steven's condition and decided to clear Steven to play based on the "testimony", "evidence" and "diagnosis" of medical experts?

So our glorious family practioner who misdiagnosed & mistreated Steven (along with De Fino) said he needed to be on blood thinners for the rest of his life (wrong), Tucker treats him with a too small of a brace (wrong) and didn't take into account the over 250 pages of expert medical opinions of well known specialists (wrong). I guess 3 wrongs dont make a right either...

How can any naysayer on this Board who has come out and publically supported Tucker and/or SU/SUAD over what Bcubs & his son along with mishandling of other athletes has gone through continue to support Tucker needs to stop looking through your Orange colored glasses and call a spade a spade.

What a "CLOWN SHOW" of a med program we have here at SU...simply embarrassing.

The official logo of the Syracuse University medical team.
Kaiser would also call this logo of the BC Eagles.

Only because I have seen this written a couple times over the last couple days by different people...

I believe BCubs said that Dr. Tucker (nor anyone else from the medical staff) did not put the brace on Steven. This was done by someone on the trainer's staff.

Not a knock on you Chakka since i feel you are pretty plugged in on this and I agree with all you have written about this issue since it began.

Denny Kellington applied the knee brace. Tucker had nothing to do with it.

Kellington is no longer employed by SU. He's now on the training staff of the Buffalo Bills.

Not entirely. The text message you're referring to pertains to the course of treatment between November 2016 and April 2017. In April, there was still some clotting. Dr Kouides stated in that text message that a small amount of clotting remaining at the 6 month point was to be expected, and that it did not warrant continuation of an anticoagulant.

When Dr. Kouides performed the doppler ultrasound in July, the clot was gone. According to Dr Kouides, scar tissue remained, not a clot.

Great piece, that makes you angry, yet excited for Steven.

I hate how this went down, and will continue to be pissed while hoping for a change in our process. This is going to linger for a long time with how it was handled. Regardless of what anyone says, it was a joke.

Still, I'm glad he gets to play, and it's a great landing spot. Hopefully he gets to play this year. If not, then a year to get even better, and I believe help bcubs wallet out, as he mentioned, hah.

Have a number two in CFB, and CBB now. WMU, and UW, so that makes things more interesting. Of course, they are enemy number one when playing the Cuse.

Depends on the what caused the clot. Was it external causes, as seems to be the case with SC, or was it unprovoked during the course of normal activity.

So in a nutshell, the only doctor that agreed and executed the DQ was Tucker.

EVERY other doctor now has the opinion that Stephen can play ball...even DiFino who made the initial recommendation to Tucker.

Makes it even more ridiculous. Sounds like it's Tucker's world and the University is just living in it.

Yes.

Now you understand why we got SO pissed off and went public.

Many people here and in the other thread aren't helping the program. And I say that sincerely.
I know you give money to the school as well but when I give money and I don't give more than four figures a year but still I want a commitment to the players and fans.

This situation has disgusted me to the highest degree. If the school wants to cash the checks they can take reasonable criticism. My post may go too far for you I disagree. I have actually received feedback from someone higher up about my post.

A commitment to a small minority of fans to fire a team doctor? In what way is this a realistic expectation?

When change happens AND ITS GOING to happen posts like this will be really annoying.

Change is going to occur and you wont give any credit to Clark speaking up and people sending letters to the AD.

No, because apparently the "issue" was identified under Coyle. Clark speaking up and people sending letters to the AD make the school look bad and hurt the perception of the program, whether it helps change or not. That's what people aren't recognizing.

So you wouldn't be ok with drtmustgo.com?

:p

I sure as hell hope that we at least get a written policy out of this, like we have seen for other schools.

Tucker and the med staff made THEMSELVES look bad. I didn't force him to pull that crap. That's solely on him.

Coyle was in the process of making a change.
The new AD wasn't in the process of following thru and obviously didn't think similarly.

When change happens it will likely be the work of Clark going public and people sending letters.
