Syracuse football not planning any MetLife Stadium games after 2016, according to official (PS)

Who s saying Rutgers is moving games to Giants Stadium??

They sell out their 56k or whatever site nicely and regularly. They don't need a gimmick like SU does.

If Syracuse isn't playing there, nd, Michigan & Ohio St will find somebody else to play there.

NOT GOOD.

I think the fact Rutgers has joined the BiG means teams like PSU, Michigan and Ohio State won't feel the need to schedule games at MetLife.

As a matter of fact, I think the BiG 9 game schedule and Rutgers joining actually makes the games less attractive to both MetLife and SU since when they originally extended the deal they were probably thinking SU could attract those BiG teams with 1-1-1 type deals.

With MetLife games against SU being less attractive to those teams and with ND now having the schedule agreement with the ACC, at best MetLife becomes a one-off possibility once a decade or so for something truly unique and special.

Cheers,
Neil

I'm guessing we had 30k there, easily.

Yes, it is sad the Syracuse can no longer be counted on to compete with nd, ped st, Ohio St and Michigan.

Sadder that every agrees with this and has their panties all up in a wad over not getting pummeled in the Dome in front of the same 30k.

I won't miss these games replacing home games, but the timing of this was very strange. Gross/Giansante hammered the MetLife games as being so great for the program that I was shocked to read the story tonight.

Makes me think MetLife is the side that's revisiting the deal...
Not with 76,000 last night.

I'm not so sure this isn't just renegotiating posturing at the moment. They leak the Yankee Stadium negotiations and then leak this. If Yankee Stadium threw their hat in the ring (and remember YS is actually in NYS) then SU may be in a good position. If it is all about money, I don't know which one would win.

I prefer YS to MetLife as it is so much easier to get to and from. Playing Army, UCONN and Rutgirls as a neutral site would make sense to many.

75K of tickets at more than $100 a ticket so probably almost 10 million in ticket sales. how much did they make in Ad money?

$30 a car, and $90 a bus. How much did they make in parking fees?

If the attendance was 71k I am sorry there is no chance Syracuse fans made up more than 25k and that is being generous. I looked at pictures and talked to friends who were there. They said it was a sea of green, gold, and blue.
Listen I hope we are able to find teams to play neutral site games in the NYC area. We were already admitting we are smaller than Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame when we agreed to play our "home" games 300 miles from our campus against Notre Dame rather than refuse their offer to play.

25,000 SU fans.

I was there.

If Notre Dame played in the Dome it would have been sold out and loud like an SU home game should be.

Good.

Playing there made sense when our conference schedule was littered with USFs, Uconns, and Cincinnatis.

No need now.

I do expect us to play some games at Yankee Stadium, but if those are against metro NYC teams that's better for us. Crowd will be even. We draw 25K every time we play in NYC no matter what the venue, so doing that in a baseball stadium is for the best.

25,000 SU fans.

I was there.

I was there and would have estimated about the same. My wife bought me a captain and coke and a Bud Light aluminum bottle and the bill was $23. I almost spit my drink out on the people in front of me but I didn't want to waste the most expensive captain and coke I ever bought.

With 20k nd fans instead of 40k.

possibly, there were a lot of Duke fans at the SU basketball game in February too. I hate the MetLife games. I think it further cheapens the product, especially when we haven't won any of the three we've played and our fans have been outnumbered by the opposing team fans. These games are nothing other than to be the whipping boy product that the big time teams schedule, a guaranteed win. And I'm sick to death of people bitching about the fans not showing up at the Dome. Field a winning team and you'll get the bandwagon fans. In the meantime take care of the diehards so you don't lose them too.

I just would love to know who is canceling this deal. If its SU/Dr.Gross he should take some credit and say so. Nobody knows if its MetLife pulling out if it is them then I guess we our fanbase didn't deliver. MetLife games as neutral site games are awesome but if we are a major program and not mid-major then he should never play a home game 300 miles away.

The opinions seem to fall into the following categories.
  • Are OK because
they give the NYC fan base an opportunity to see the team play
they make SU a lot of money
they give us national TV exposure
they help SU in recruiting
they give NYC area players families a chance to see them play
they allow SU to schedule teams that would not go to the Dome
if they are not home games
  • Are not OK
under any circumstances
if they are not home games because it reduces the number of home games
we don't need the money anymore
we always lose
there are too many opponents fans there
it cheapens the product (???)
we really don't get any recruits from them
they (somehow) screw loyal season ticket holders
Many of these don't seem to amount to much more than rationalization of an opinion. It all seems to come down to locals vs New Yorkers. That being the case, the Yankee Stadium deal would seem to be a good compromise.

30k easily. Your seats were too good to see. The upper decks had a ton of cheapass SU folk. I know a bunch who sat up there, lots of orange.

Two media types tweeted during game. One said 2/3-1/3 ND. The other said 70%-30% ND.

I know this, when we had third and short...it was Damn loud in there.

I guess a lot depends on where you were sitting because it is hard to see the sections above you, but I highly doubt that split based on crowd noise alone. At KO I even commented that I thought the Orange were well represented based on what I could see and everyone agreed.

25,000 people can make a lot of noise.

yes it cheapens the product when you become known as the team that will play a home game anywhere. Home being the key word. Do you see any other team doing the same thing? Any team? It's football with a limited amount of games, having the home field advantage does make a difference and the whole point of it is to win games. How about we revisit the discussion when SU actually wins a game there?

Prolly because it's the bridge and tunnel version of ND fans but on TV it looked like a neutral site game. Either orange or random people in the crowd.
