Syracuse football projected depth chart (defense): who will seize 7 starting jobs on defense?

Me I am actually very excited about our defense next season. We have so many athletic, fast, dynamic guys on this defense and some of them are out to have breakout seasons so I am just Very excited!!!
I think this will be one of our best defenses in years. Of course you know having a new defensive coordinator coming in may slow things down a bit but maybe not depends on the continuity But on that note I was very happy to see Brian Ward go just because I hated the Tampa 2 defense. It’s not a good defense for college from what I hear and I saw firsthand gave up way too many big plays. So the clothes I think we have pretty much a budding superstar on every single unit. What do you think about that LOL

I think some of our de recruits players may shift to linebacker (linton, kensler, gelbron (sp) Richards) along with Cantu, Jones, wallace. This will give us speed, size and depth at linebacker and allow them to attack the line of scrimmage and fill gaps. With Jonathan, black, Williams and players that redshirted at dt we will have depth for a three man front with rotation. We can also go to the transfer portal for nt if necessary.
I think trill and iffy are the corners. Safety is Cisco, coley with trotter or Clarke. There are a number of options at the safety position. There is also carter or labrose.
Just my two cents.
Agree. Can't see guys like Kinsley, Goulbourne ever playing DE in this defense. Truthfully, with how light each of them are, they would have had to gain a ton to even play DE in our old Defense. This defense could get them on the field a bit quicker at LB.

Kingsley is our best returning dlinemen bye a good amount. He will start at end easily. Maybe some others move but he will not.

Seems pretty straightforward that up front will be Kingsley, Bear and Black. Other than Harper, depth behind them will be interesting to see what happens.
It also seems certain that the back five will be the returning core of Cisco, Iffy and Trill and I think the only variable will be where Cisco and Trill line up. Iffy seems a lock at boundary corner. Can see either Cisco or Trill at the hybrid/star position. Can see Cisco staying at safety and Trill at field corner, but have no idea how it will shake out. Who fills the other two spots and where will be interesting to see. Depth behind those guys is also a toss up, and there's virtually no scenario where we dont have some really young guys in the two-deep.
The most intriguing question, to me, is what happens at linebacker. Jones seems the only certainty, but what role in the stack is anyone's guess if you ask me. I also think they've got to get Richards on the field, the kid is just too dynamic of an athlete to use in the limited role he had as a third down specialist under Ward. I think he would be perfect to use as a strong side backer that would rotate down to the edge and bring pressure or have edge responsibilities against the run. Who fills the third spot and in what role? No idea. Do we see any rotations or different packages where we have two rush ends in and a five down front or swap an lb for a db in a traditional dime look? Will be interesting to see.

Think Trotter emerges this season in the LB/S hybrid.

Cisco has to get better with his tackling if he wants to play S/LB. He's not physical enough for me. He's a great free safety. Trill is ideal. Not sure if you take him away from CB if we dont have enough there. I would like to know whats going on with Cam Jones. He can be that 5th DB who can be physical on run but can drop back in zone. Is Stritz physical enough? I don't know. Do you keep him at CB if he's one of the best?. Also Clarke isn't afraid to tackle. They may look at him there. This defense is tailor made for Richards. If he doesnt start its on him. There is no excuse. OLB in this scheme allows him to do exactly whats he's been asked to do the last couple years.

We need to keep focusing on finding big boys. Same old song and dance

I agree. If it were my call I definitely put Trill at star as he is the most versatile and physical db on the roster, imo. I think there is more you can do to mitigate a weakness at corner when you can match Trill up more freely. I think Stritz would be solid there but not quite as fluid against skilled route runners. No matter what happens some younger guys are going to have to step up and play some big time ball in order for this all to work out.
I thought not getting Richards onto the field in a more prominent role was one of Ward's biggest failures. The kid is big, fast and aggressive and I can't understand how you have a player like him and don't ask him to do way more for you. I agree this scheme is tailor made for his skill set and if he doesn't find a big role rushing the quarterback and blowing up outside runs it will be to our detriment.

Right on. Younger guys have to step up.

I might be going overboard a little bit but my gut actually tells me I think we possibly could have maybe 4 to 5 all ACC 1st to 3rd all ACC teams on their defense next season and I don’t mean that honorable mention crap LOL

Also we need to enjoy Andre Cisco’s final season watching Andre Cisco Has Been a privilege,go to the NFL get that money. I think will be our first 1st rounder since whoever it was the offensive lineman during Doug Marone era.

We need to get some guys to the pros. IMO Trill is an NFL athlete. Put him where he can best develop into an NFL player
Oh yeah I might a true Williams to the list of leaving early. I really think with the right coordinator and Scheme our defense could be really special

Pugh

Coley, Richards and Cantin

the boom’s coming in 2020, can potentially throw Clarke in there too

I think we need to hold our opponents to less points then our offense scores. If we do that I predict we we will win games.

What do you think about possible roles for Nunn in this scheme?

Im not totally sure what to expect from him after redshirting. I kinda like Nunn as a CB or Nickel. Im sure he will get a lot of reps and be in the mix for playing time. Safety is a possibility too. Can he beat out the experience of Coley?
