Syracuse hiring Alex Kline as GM

"If a guy shoots 20% from the 3-point line, he is pretty much a 20% 3-point shooter."
What insight.
Ok it's obvious you don't like Alex because you totally embarrassed yourself thinking his role was exactly like an NBA GM without doing any research.

Maybe give him one offseason when you really see the results of his actual job to see if the roster improves? If it doesn't, go crazy. Lay into him and I'll be right there with you.

I was surprised at that number. I'm right there with you that I knew there weren't as many as some of the board seemed to think, but I would have guessed more in the ACC.

Kline is also working to identify what players may enter the portal and building relationships with players ahead of time. He’s a relationship guy. He has been going back to HS. The thought here is he gives us a head start with some guys. I’m not advocating keeping Red, but hopefully this gets fans to understand who Kline is and what his strengths are.
Exactly. We can thank Klein, in part, for finding and identifying Fennell. That’s my understanding at least.

correct and he's pretty high on him. but they're not going all in on Fennell either.

The portal targets are in the hundreds.
I'm hoping/assuming they've built out player profiles by position. For Center they're looking for xyz statistical attributes etc.

Portal money doesn't guarantee success but it probably means a much better season than what we just saw.

The difference being that, as stated in the article, SU has one of smallest staffs in the league. Those other programs could task their additional assistants with some of those duties that Kline is now performing. In SU's case they had a small staff AND no GM, which certainly hamstrung them.

They don’t have Klines background at all.

If the targets weren't in the hundreds I'd be seriously concerned.

My biggest red flag in that article is that "agents are reaching out to them to give them the scoop on their players". If they're reaching out to us, they're reaching out to everyone else. We need to be prepared for bidding wars. Let's hope we are.

I prefer younger players, maybe in their 20's. But, if Alex thinks hundreds are better, I'm in!!! And, it's KLINE not KLEIN...come on people.

A very informative article in the Louisville courier-journal recently
that went into a lot of detail about their NIL situation, how the coaching change was a big factor, what kind of $$ they had to spend, and how the recent success has reenergized the base and gotten supporters to up the ante. I can't bring it up here (computer illiterate) but it's worth reading

no doubt. you use the agents to find out who is willing to move. but for every guy an agent is talking about, that kid may also stay home because they used you for leverage...or they're using you for leverage somewhere else. I suspect he's being coy and they've talked with more folks than just agents to have priority targets in mind who they know are interested.

This one?

Good article. This line stood out, “At the College of Charleston, Kelsey fundraised more than $1 million, helping athletes secure NIL deals and helping himself land one of the best mid-major recruiting classes in the country.”

That effort sounds a lot like a football coach we know and love; taking it upon himself to secure NIL dollars.

That's the one. The thing that also makes it interesting is how similar the Louisville and Syracuse demographics are. Both communities where college athletics are king, not huge metropolitan locations, competing for the same pool of players, long history of success, etc, etc. NIL and the portal are yearly challenges with no guaranteed results, but Louisville seems to have it's act together this year.

One thing seems to be missing in the comments put out on the board so far this seaon.
That is credit to GM Alex Kline for focusing on the array of skilled players the Orange have this year.
-Autry: Freeman and retaining Freeman / George / Recruiting Sadiq / Fennell
-Kline: Kyle / Kingz / Betsey / Zephir
-Melo: Kiyan :)

Credit to Kline for finding great pieces. However I think the #1 prize goes to Autry for keeping Freeman here. Imagine we have to watch him put up 20 and 10 against us at some other school.

If Kiyans success keeps rolling and translates to better competition… Melo once again jumps near the top ;). Against the cupcakes he has been pretty much unguardable when determined to go get his own… will be interesting to see. The last guard right off the bench who was like that was Dion and he was a problem and a spark most every game when he came in.

Good article but hard to read as a longtime cbb fan in general . Everything talking about roster building magnifies the new reality we are win. It has eliminated college sports as its own category of sport and just created another pro league alternative.

For every kid old enough to understand how things work since the beginning of NIL, their reality is cbb is now just an alternative league to the NBA and the G league and for P4 schools that invest students attend the school with one or two pro franchises on campus as a perk vs part of the alumnus family
