Syracuse just signed an athlete from Alabama

This whole thing is bizarre. The tape is obviously impressive, but I just can't figure out how he even slipped through the cracks of the schools that you would think would pour thru Alabama for B-listers (UCF, USF, Ga Southern, etc). What's even weirder is that his HS head coach is a recognizable name, Mike DuBose, former Alabama head coach.

Oh well, I hope everyone else's loss, and UAB's death, is our gain.

His team is in the 2A conference in Al.. and they went 5-5 last year. The graduating class was like 50 kids and Luverne is middle of nowhere rural.

The Mike DuBose part is what's throwing me. Dude has to still have plenty of contacts throughout FBS conferences. I'm amazed Kenterius fell through the cracks in spite of that, since you would think the former heard coach for Alabama could pick up the phone and tell a dozen D1 schools he's got a legit prospect they should look at.

Hope this story gets around and coaches with overlooked gems give us a holler. One more spot, let's find a good DB.

what's stranger - that DuBose is coaching a rural high school team or that Kenterius fell through the cracks?
Looks like it's DuBose's second stint at Luverne, too. He coached there 2003-2004 before becoming the DC and then head coach at Millsaps (D3 school in Mississippi), then went to Memphis as the DL coach, and then back to Luverne. Weird.

who knows, some people just dont like the rat race. I'm know I'm one. He's 62 or so, maybe this is retirement.

Let's hope Coach Dubose doesn't pass onto our coaches how to defense this. This was the craziest play ever.

Those wondering Coach Dubose grew up in Opp, AL...not too far from Luverne.

Both of those teams were in my school's conference at the time. Millsaps isn't anymore, but my conference's assistant commish was on that Millsaps team.

It is weird. The only thing that I think of in the way of an explanation is that he's playing for a very small school in Alabama and putting together those highlights against other small schools in Alabama. Some coaches might be justifiably worried about level of competition. His competition is like Class D in NYS. The kids might be better prepared for football down there and might put more time into it but it's still Class D. It doesn't appear as if he made the major camp circuit last summer either. His position coach says he clocked a 4.47 at the West Florida camp. Who the heck even knew there was a U. of West Florida? I suppose what is impressive is that once he was discovered, there were 50-plus schools in contact according to his coaches. But it also helps that he was discovered after NLI day with a bunch of schools ready to take a flyer on a kid after losing someone they expected to sign. Still, that's a lot of schools showing interest.

Wow.

The kid received some high level coaching.

How is it that DuBose couldn't get him an offer?

Very odd.

I'm actually starting to wonder if the coach completely dropped the ball as far as him getting identified. If you have a big time talent at a school that tiny, it probably takes some marketing at first to get the kid's name out there. If there was no video on him until after his senior season, and he didn't attend any significant camps, probably explains a lot. I doubt a camp at the University of West Florida, wherever the hell that is, would show up on anyone's radar.

If the school is small enough and doesn't have much of a reputation for putting out football players, I doubt coaches in the area would be showing up at it. It might be so small that they bypass the area entirely.

I guess it's possible for a kid to fly totally under the radar, if he doesn't do the camp routine, 7 on 7, etc. The competition level is certainly a factor, which blows his highlights out of proportion.

So many kids are evaluated at camps and tournaments and events now, so not participating would make it much harder to be evaluated. Often a "sleeper" is discovered by coaches out to see another guy, sometimes they catch a promising looking freshman or something and keep an eye on him. But when you are isolated, and from a small school/league that doesn't produce enough big time players for coaches to venture out, it's possible a 3-star guy (which this guy might be) could get overlooked. I also wonder if the fact that he apparently excels in two other sports is a factor...maybe he's not really had a football future on his radar.

I'm impressed with his height. Nine times out of ten when you hear people crowing about landing a great sleeper that somehow slipped by the big boys despite a great highlight reel, you click it and see a guy that's 5'11". 90% of the time the big programs are going to pass on that. But this kid has pretty good height for a receiver, if he's got ball skills at all I would have expected at least some mid major/low P5 interest. How does a Wake Forest or Duke miss a kid like this, if his grades are what they say? I have zero ability to evaluate a QB, but the ball does pop off his hand.

The Dubose factor is the weirdness in all this. If he thought the kid could play at the next level, he couldn't make a call? If the kid had NBA dreams, he wouldn't have sat down and had a talk with him about real life? I just don't see how a coach like that can almost let this kid miss on a free college education, even at a low mid-major.

In any event, Syracuse should be really happy...how can you go wrong with a kid like this? He's got good size, decent athleticism, and he's a good student and apparently citizen. It's a good land.

With Dubose resigning, I'm wondering if he just hadn't checked out mentally this year and was going through the motions. I've seen it in my career so I'm sure it happens with coaches too.

Agree with most of what you said, aside from the "decent athleticism" part. Clearly his mechanics as a QB are going to need to be developed. However, on the film his burst from standing to sprinting out of the pocket and his agility look exceptional to me. How that athleticism eventually translates onto the football field as an ACC QB is anybody's guess, but he looks extremely athletic to my eye.
