Syracuse not a top 25 team

what part of 2016 Final Four do these writers not understand?!?!?!?

Logic seems sound.

13-loss team wins four games in a row in March, then loses two-thirds of their offensive production.
The next season's team has three starters who are new to the program.
The next season's team must be ranked in the top 25 before the season begins.

It's irritating with the lack of respect year in and year out for a national power.

The numbers tell a different story. In the past 20 seasons between the Preseason AP Poll and the Final AP Poll, we have been...
-Overrated 11 times (1997, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015)
-Underrated 7 times (1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2009, 2010, 2012)
-Unranked in both pre and final polls 2 times (2008, 2016)

Now do that with the other top 5 teams in wins historically .

Interesting. Obviously a little crude, but I'm glad you posted that.

This must reflect AP polling - 2012 jumped out at me, because I remember being top-five in the preseason and probably settling lower than that after flaming out in the Elite Eight. The AP (more reliable than the coaches, in my mind) doesn't release a post-tournament poll, so this isn't a precise tool, but it's interesting.

Anyway, polls are fairly meaningless, preseason polls completely so. I'm inclined to think SU does get the short end at the expense of favored programs now and again (Duke and seeding in both 2005 and 2010, for instance), but the claim in the OP is bogus, as far as I'm concerned.

guess I shouldn't be surprised...how could they have left Syracuse outside the pre-season top 25 WITH Carmelo Anthony SMH

Because the only returning players from the previous season contributed minimally to an NIT team that was a complete trainwreck.

Are the "we don't deserve to be ranked" people that misinformed, or just being obstinate? Do yourselves a favor - take a look at Athlon's laughable top 25, and the teams that are ranked, and the personnel they have, and compare it to ours. If, after that process, you then remain convinced we don't deserve to be ranked you are both misinformed and obstinate.

Think you might have forgotten the final column, NCAA Tournament. From your unranked and overrated 2013 Final Four, 2016 Final Four.

The magnitude also matters, missing by 1-5 slots is not under or overrated, but being unranked to National Champions is truly underrated.

Cuse is consistently underrated. That's not orange colored glasses skewing our perception, that's a real thing that happens often. It's more than mildly annoying, but it is fun when the team ends up being good and we get the press acting like we came out of nowhere. What? Syracuse reloaded?! Ya Don't Say! As if reloading hasn't been business as usual most of Jim Boeheim's tenure.

The lack of respect is also a reason fans of VCU, Gonzaga, etc. think we're arrogant on their message boards. We see us as a tier 1 program (tier 1 = top 10-ish)because we are. They see us as a lesser tier and think our perception doesn't match reality. For instance, they think they can compete with us on any level, which is absurd.

And my comment wasn't even really aimed at the A.p. Polls over the years, they seem to be reasonably fair. It was more towards the polls done by the preseason mags that were stated in the article. But hey, a chance to make me look stupid I get it. Lolz

Part of the fun is proving these rankings wrong.

No worries whatsoever about this--just like I wasn't worked up over the ACC projections yesterday. Here's what I expect to happen:
  • We start the season unranked, or at the extreme tail end of the top 25, garnering very little hype during the preseason
  • We dominate in the invitational tournament we'll play in, winning or making the championship game--which opens eyes nationally
  • We quickly shift into the top 10 based upon this performance
  • We get off to a quick start to the season, despite the pieces needing time to gel, and climb into the top 5 range by the holidays
Our team has a lot of talent and firepower this season. Most outsiders look at our squad, see a team that barely made the tournament [despite the final four appearance], and then lost its top three scorers / starting backcourt. They'll take some convincing before they change their opinion.

They'll be singing a different tune in December.

It's irritating with the lack of respect year in and year out for a national power, but rankings mean nothing .

Agree with the last part. Color me the lone ranger but I don't really buy the SU does not get any respect argument, any more than I expect all but a few teams think they get shorted on respect nationally and in the media, or care. The national media is sometimes not going to have as sophisticated knowledge of the team as the fan base, and if they see 3 top scorers depart its going to default to a big drop. Having said that, I recognize Bleacher Report immediately elevated SU to 4th in ACC, so it does not take rocket science to figure out where SU should generally (or minimally) fall with the addition of White, but I think the lack of respect argument is overplayed by players, overplayed by fans and overplayed by Syracuse fans, particularly given the high volume of SU alum in the media. In any event, it is all white noise -- I get that there is some satisfaction in an early season ranking and some irritation being "under-ranked" but in the end it matters not in college hoops, now so more than ever with the current state of the ACC.

The number of times other power programs get overrated and underrated is relevant to the argument, though.

I'll do Kentucky and Duke:

Kentucky
Overrated 10 times: (2016, 2014, 2013, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2002, 2000, 1999, 1997)
Underrated 7 times: (2012, 2010, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2001, 1998)
Correctly ranked 3 times: (2015, 2011, 2009)

Duke
Overrated 7 times: (2016, 2014, 2012, 2011, 2007, 2004, 2003)
Underrated 8 times: (2013, 2010, 2009, 2008, 2005, 2001, 2000, 1997)
Correctly ranked 5 times: (2015, 2006, 2002, 1999, 1998)

Think you might have forgotten the final column, NCAA Tournament.

But the NCAA Tournament can be incredibly misleading in terms of evaluating a team's success. We were extremely good in 2010 and 2012 and didn't make the Final Four. We stunk last year (for Syracuse standards) and made the Final Four.
