What makes BH a bad hire? I’m truly curious on what the pitch against him is not in anyway being combative on it. If there is a legitimate case then it wouldn’t be out on a limb. Since everyone pays close attention here around the program like they did to a small extent around Lykes… what’s the full court press making BH awful?
mostly from this perspective. We'd likely be a stepping stone to an outsider like this. That's if he can negotiate the battlefield of a strange new place with serious limits competitive wise with NIL, etc. and have success. He'd be looked at from day one with a critical skeptical eye by the Syracuse fan base with its notorious show me success first attitude before buying in.
The fear is if they don't give GMAC a look, a revered legend in these parts, there'd likely be the same reaction in response to the stupid decision of putting the baseball stadium where it is vs downtown. IOW people angry/upset and staying away just for spite, not buying in.
Also Not sure his affect/personality is a fit here either, regardless we're still taking a chance with this type mid level, albeit successful coach. As RF20 pointed out successfully in detail, there absolutely NO QUESTION who resume is better and looks better. But there's now some nuance that need be put into the mix given what Gerry accomplished literally last night.
And listen they’re gonna be a 16 seed vs a 1 so no one should expect with a 7 man roster for them to pull an upset so jumping ahead to cut it off before it comes to pass, that isn’t and shouldn’t be a factor.
But the bigger picture over two seasons should be and what happened last night should be too. To the poster saying it doesn't make sense to see how one game should matter in this assessment makes no sense, none. It happened.
He took a doormat to success very very quickly. To not pay attention to that given the unique variables at play (historic syracuse legend, likely lifer with success) is antithetical to due diligence required on this very precarious situation here now that is Syracuse basketball.
The world didn't exactly shift on it axis because of last night, but it did shift, and should shift, as a factor for the hiring of a basketball coach at Syracuse University.
As mentioned elsewhere this is a lightning in the bottle now unique situation the way all the planets have just aligned. Day one a GMAC tenure would have record number of us getting seasons tickets back and others going in first time jumping on the Gerry train.
The excitement meter for the fanbase would be immediately and ridiculously high off the charts with a true circle the wagons underdog us against the world mentality with everyone around here all in. We saw a kid mature as a player to immediate and nonstop success albeit different type of success taking the reins once Carmello left. And now have seen a man start maturing as a coach with likely more maturation and success as a coach.
And with success he'd likely be a lifer here vs. the USF coach who would likely use us as a stepping stone to the next level. He overcame his physical limitations to have success as a player, I wouldn't bet against him doing the same here circumnavigating the formative obstacles here too to get us competitive and successful again, that I have no doubt (well if I'm being honest there's some doubt there given all the factors at play).
But If we can't get a top top level guy here (Wright, Pitino, etc) as a coach as then it's taking a chance no matter if it's GMAC or another mid level pick. Why not take a chance on a guy whose upside is as above with immediate upside payoff vs. a similarly chancey albeit good resume pick who also may or may not be successful here but who's payout to success comes (if it does at all) later.
That’s the best I got to explain it. No easy answers here but would hate to see us miss this very unique and pressing opportunity to at least have him in the mix of interviewing etc. just to be expedient on what looked 100% right with BH but before last night occurred.
