Back in the 90s, Wisconsin made a strategic decision to put effort in athletics. They saw fairly immediate results everyone noticed with Barry Alvarez in football - but they’ve been a consistent NCAA tournament team in men’s basketball since ‘94.

The simple answer to how they are successful is the university is committed to success, and they are a huge state university that can fund for success. Additionally they have a huge, passionate fan base where virtually everyone in the state follows the Badgers (the Packers co-opted a college tradition and started playing “Jump Around” - how many NFL teams “steal” well known local college traditions)?

The provincialism regarding the mid-west on display on this board reeks of eastern liberal elitism.

Wisconsin:
A top 40 academic school.
Huge and rabid following.
One of the most idyllic campuses in the country.
Capital city
A little more than 2 hours to Chicago. (VS 4+ hours from SU to NYC)

The lack of sunny days is a huge difference with Syracuse.

According to this, we are the 13th least sunny city in the country. US cities that get the least sun, from Seattle to Pittsburgh

Lots of funny/stereotypical comments here. Love it as a WI resident. I hope most of you realize that Gard was on the hot seat and basically forced to play a different style and they're doing even better playing uptempo this season!!! It's true that the Badgers have greater resources as a large public university. However, Wisconsin and Syracuse recruit in a similar manner with a very regional approach. Wisconsin loves getting players from Minnesota.

Had the same team last year and shouldn’t have been bad. Wiscy has been good for decades.

Wisconsin has been average for the past 6 seasons (minus one season) by their standards. Thus, why Gard has been on the hot seat and forced to change their style.

Living in MN I agree with you. Bucky has
recruited non athletic 6’10” white guys that play good in a system relying on accurate shooting and passing. It works at WI since they run their system so well.

No offense intended to anyone here or elsewhere, but after FrantheMan came to town, I no longer subscribe to very many other people's opinion on why a team can and can not recruit. Usually they're just recycled, lazy takes.
Usually from folks with pro coach agendas making excuses.
