Talk

All you guys who talk about an open air stadium... never attended a game at old Archbold Stadium in late November. In the freezing cold and the snow. Trust me, it won't fly.
Amen sister. I always knew I never had to shower on a Saturday when we played at home. One season in the early 70's, every game but one was played in the rain. Such a joy sitting on wet concrete!

Thank you. These guys were born yesterday.

Tailgating for last year's USF game should be a recent enough reminder that an open air stadium is not a good idea for the 2nd half of the season.

People have concerns about attendance in 2012. Just how many spoiled-by-indoor-football fans will show up for a cold & wet game in the great outdoors?

You know that would probably cost in the vicinity of $100 million, right? It's not like going and putting snow tires on your car on a Saturday afternoon.

$100 million would be cheap.

Try 5X that, minimum.

THIS. We have a hard enough time getting fans to games. Plus, I love the options playing inside gives us. Doug's high octane offense won't work as well in the cold and mush.

I doubt it'll be open air, but the concept of putting it downtown has significant merits.

IMO they should consider the site that was second choice for the sky chiefs near armory square.

Parking could be plentiful and a resurrected OnTrack train service (operated by SU) would give students direct access to the games from campus.

The key to filling the dome are the locals, downtown location gives that possibility the best chance.

I never saw a game at Archbold - was a freshman in '83-'84 - so I can't speak to that experience specifically, but I did attend NY Jets games as a kid at Shea Stadium in the dead of winter. I know how cold it gets in Syracuse and I can tell you that the wind coming off Flushing Bay made Shea Stadium just as cold.

I'm kind of torn on the issue of an outdoor stadium at Syracuse though. On the one hand you can say that 'Hey, as long as you prepare and dress for it, you'll be fine', but on the other hand, I remember days on the Hill as being so incredibly cold that it didn't matter what you wearing, the wind and cold bit right through everything.

It's a fun discussion but the point is moot. There really is reason no to sink hundreds of millions of dollars into a new facility when really, there is nothing wrong with the Dome.

If the football program ever gets itself to a point where they are like Michigan and could easily sell 100,000 tickets to every game, then maybe have the discussion. I tend to think though that if it ever does get to that point that, first - I'll be long dead, and second - they'd probably just figure a way to either expand the Dome or just tear it down and build a bigger one it's place.

Unless they really need the space to expand the campus getting rid of the dome is nuts, but IMO if you are going to build anywhere, the Inner harbor would be the place to do it. Put it between Bear and Kirkpatrick. Tons of parking in the area already, and right between 690 and 81.

That's a pretty good spot. The problem is getting students to the game.

Train runs to the mall. And instead of the buses out of the dome for the satelite lots, bus the kids in. I don't think it would be be a big problem.

It's too bad they just can't get a helicopter and have it take the dome roof away when it's nice out...now who might have one they'd sell cheap that really needs the money?

And where would this money come from? Fred Dicker was reporting that Syracuse (city) was going bankrupt and looking for a bailout from Cuomo. Don't see stadium funds in that package.

Neither of those are viable options. The train tracks don't run any where near that location. It's drop off is on the backside off the mall forcing students to walk at least a half mile to the game through private property.

Busing isn't an option in that scenario either.

It's probably a useless discussion anyway from a $ perspective.

How about covering the inside of the dome roof with video panels and projecting video of the sky. Then pump in cold/warm air to match the view and have an irrigation system to sprinkle just enough water or simulated snow to make it feel real. Kind of like one of the shows at Disney World. Maybe they could even make the seating rock back and forth when there is a big hit. That whole system should be cheaper than a retractable roof.

I realize you're probably joking, but that actually sounds like an awesome idea. :D

Open Air stadium is an all-around bad idea. Nothing like the dome atmosphere when we are good and quite frankly we do not have the fan base to pull it off. It would be a big empty wet stadium on most days.

As for dowtown or anywhere else (Fairgrounds has long been the location I would like to see)...that would involve taxpayer money. If that is the case I want a clear understanding on what type of events WILL, not proposed, but WILL take place in the new stadium. Must avoid a Chiefs type deal where you build it and they shut out any type of event or new franchise (pro soccer) from taking off. Syracuse University dictating stadium use would be an awful idea if the current events that take place or do not take place at the dome are any indication.

Where is the stimulus money when you need it?

let Congel build it, he'll be good for a guaranteed 55k when fully built out.

the concession stands will give us "Loonies" in change if congel gets involved

Partner with the nation and let them build a hotel/casino/convention center... As long as they pay for the new stadium.
Now, that's creative thinking. Too bad Turning Stone is so far away. Maybe Onondaga Nation could emulate Oneida Nation and do something in Syracuse. I have no idea where there would be enough property for it ... or how Onondaga Nation could come up with the needed upfront resources... but too bad this was not thought of before Turning Stone was built.

Any new stadium needs to be an original - a one-of-a-kind stadium. Like on a flotilla on Onondaga Lake.

Pretty sure the Oneida Indian Nation can't build anything on Onondaga territory.

Unless you want the new stadium about 35 miles away from campus.

Then we would be UConn. :D
