$400,000,000 or so for a better tailgating experience? In this (or any) economy? Good luck with that.

Plenty of colleges have shuttles and such.

I'd like to think that there's a way to make both happy (and I honestly think the answer is simply a winning team). However, the two groups aren't mutually exclusive. There are plenty of people in CNY that also graduated from S.U. These aren't completely separate groups that are somehow at odds with one another. Let's not kid ourselves about who's going to foot the bill for this thing though. The university can't dip into its endowment to pay for a completely unnecessary football stadium and the city is on the verge of bankruptcy. Where's the money going to come from? The university is going to ask the alumni to pay, just like they always do, and while we were perfectly happy to write a check to renovate Manley or other football facilities, we simply will not contribute to this.

So, if SU wants to build a state-of-the-art 55,000 seat multi-use facility with a retractable roof at Skytop, you think all the alumni will refuse to contribute because it's not "on campus"?

Best of both worlds - on campus and easy for locals - is somewhere on South Campus.

Plenty of parking and we already have good tailgates there.

As of now there is plenty of parking - bus rides are a bit of a hassle but we just bring beers on there and get the riders yelling as an extension of our tailgate.

It's good to know though that even if we get a new stadium people will still piss and moan and find reasons to not go and complain. Do what's best for the program and let those who complain deal with it.

You realize Skytop (at least the portion of South Campus) is part of campus, right? Campus isn't just the 200 yards in every direction from the Dome.

He was responding to ottomets who suggested as such.

How about a new retractable roof stadium built in Syracuse to be shared by the Orange & Bills funded by Golisano & Pegula. Blow up Drumlins and build it there.

Now, that's creative thinking. Too bad Turning Stone is so far away. Maybe Onondaga Nation could emulate Oneida Nation and do something in Syracuse. I have no idea where there would be enough property for it ... or how Onondaga Nation could come up with the needed upfront resources... but too bad this was not thought of before Turning Stone was built.
The leaders are very much against a casino. As I umderstand it, they are traditionalists.

Given that I was born and raised in Syracuse,NY and attended and graduated from Syracuse University (now a relocated alumni) with a Mother that has been empoyed by the University for almost 2 decades and a father who helped literally build much of the campus, I am clearly the authority on knowing what is the best comprise! (jk, but i do have some unique perspective I think)

The 1st Key is realizing you should make it as easy as possible, even if it involves extra expense, for students to get to the game because this is after all what makes college sports so fun and unique. Right now this is accomplished.

The 2nd Key is realizing that gameday crowds are driven by locals, they are the annuity stream for the athletic department while the alumni are the stock portfolio that can give big chunks but the volitility can be tougher to rely on. This is a toss up right now and could be improved

The 3rd and final Key is realizing that a healthy City of Syracuse is better for Syracuse University. Kids want to go to a school in a city that is Fun, Warm, and where there is opportunity to advance ones career. We cant do the second but i feel a Stadium that is in a place where locals would go out anyways and students would find fun (Armory for example) would be the biggest win, win, win, win (University/alumni/city/locals) this synergistic combination is almost non exsistant.

I think the obvious solution is to subsidize an expansion of Chuck's. Problem solved. :D

I don't want to have to start rooting for the Bills

Not to change the subject, but remember when the Jets training camp first moved to Cortland? Doc Gross was opining on how great a Jets preseason game in the Dome would be. Whatever happened to that? I wonder if he ever followed up on it and maybe got shot down by the Jets. Again, sorry for changing the subject, but the Knicks game here next week got me thinking.

In a very funny coincidence, today's mail included the annual "Dear SU alum, thank you for your donations the last year, but please give MORE" letter. I'm sure many of you got the same letter today. LOL. Time to break out the checkbook...

After investing ALL of this money into the Dome the only reason for a new stadium would be "naming rights" and being able to get some big company to pay big bucks to put naming rights on the stadium. If they got a company lined up then yeah I guess I could see it maybe happening. But, honestly I don't see it happening.

From a competitive advantage it makes sense. Get these southern schools in the ACC to come up here in late Oct and November to play in the cold outside. The downside is how many SU fans who have been pampered for 30+ years of sitting in a climate control DOME for football will pay to sit in the cold and rain watch football. And lets be honest look around the Dome for football, it is mainly an older crowd. I don't see that group sitting outside on a rainy September day or a cold early November day for 4+ hours to watch SU vs Wake Forest!

It's Syracuse University football. The campus atmosphere IS what college football is all about -- walking the Quad, sitting on the steps of Hendricks chapel, listening to the marching band, walking by the buildings peaking in the atmosphere. It's not about drinking beer behind a car -- and I like beer at least as much as the next guy. I have been going to SU games for longer than most here, and I have never once had a hard time parking. And I don't pay to park -- which is certainly an option.

We should be doing everything we can to protect football on campus at SU. If not, the city can just go get a semi-pro team, and the locals can go to those games and drink beer in Solvay at the Fairgrounds.

you do know if the locals dropped SU football for a minor league team in solvay or any other alternative form of entertainment, SU Football would almost immediatly fold right?

Straw man argument. It's not either/or. Give the locals a good product and help make them feel a kinship with the University and they will come. An off campus stadium does not forge a relationship with the locals. It's just a place to play football. Lose there, and no one, and I mean NO ONE will show up.

how is it straw man? you said:

what i am saying is, be careful what you wish for. My point is, lets say were gonna get 40k for a game. i think we have a better chance at that marginal 10k if we go after the marginal fan that is obviously on the fence debating the other 4 things they were thinking of doing, (armory/casino/etc) i think that putting the stadium in a place where the marginal fan may have wanted to hang out anyways, may increase the likely hood of them attending.

50k in the dome is the atmosphere i am after. and a healthy budget so we can afford stud coordinators whether for aquisition or retention. Nobody is arguing that the current location of the dome isnt quintisential college placement however we are not lucky enough to be in a prosperous or tradionally rooted football region (south)

Here are some shots of my ideal location. Some may remember this from a similar discussion we had a few years ago. Carrier Circle has excellent road access and the area has become quite decrepit since Carrier/Magna decided to pull out.

Carrier Corporation located at Thompson Rd & Carrier Circle

Cardinal Stadium superimposed on the Carrier Corp property. Same magnification. BTW...Cardinal Stadium is a retractable roof facility, capacity 63,400.

And who paid to build it?

And who paid to build it?

It's bought and paid for by the same dreamers who think we're building an open air stadium downtown...

I meant.. who paid for the Cardinal one.

Most years, football is not being played that late into the fall. This year, for example, the Louisville game is the only game being played in November.

People have been going to games in Green Bay in JANUARY for generations. I think games in Syracuse in OCTOBER and NOVEMBER are manageable.

In the ACC, no game would be played on campus after Thanksgiving weekend. That is not the dead of winter.
