TE Connor Center (Milford) Offered

He's going to be a tackle.
Ultimately yes, but he could start out as a TE Why the rush at buking this guy up? We aren't in a critical situation yet. If the true tackle prospects come into the program we won't go to Def -Con -1couchburn

Sounds like Shafer played a Mack Brown poker move on a set timeline decision and it didn't go the way we had hoped. Kid needs to do whats best for him and his conscience!

Depends on how Shafer views the kid. Frankly, he's a Project with capital "P". With that comes lots of risk. The kid has never played...ever. So looking at the risk, he may just be a reach offer that is easy to pass on given the kid is not in love with the Cuse. While it's good he seems to value the scholarship... seems also like this is about him finding a free ride and hard to know how much football fortitude he has.

It was mentioned on the other forum that Lichtenstein was leaving..that should make one more in the overall total number of schos available.

Lichtenstein has been gone for months (he didn't participate in Spring practice).

If everybody shows up in August, we're at either 83 or 84 scholarship players (depending on if Ben Barrett ever shows back up).

Or that there is someone else out there that we don't know about . . . just like this kid, a week ago.

I was wondering about Barrett. If he doesn't show that is the open schollie for 2013?

As long as figuring in the allotment of early enrollees that we can count against 2012 we don't exceed 25 for 2013 it would be

Wow, kid took a big gamble by passing up a free ride. Maybe he has offers other places.

He has visits lined up with other schools

Not sure. I think Barrett practiced for a week with the team in 2012 before leaving (although I think he's still enrolled in school), so I'm not sure if his 2012 scholarship can be reassigned to a January 2013 enrollee. Barrett didn't take part in Spring Ball, so at this point maybe he changed his mind again.

However, here's where things get funky...

Marrone used up all of his 2012 scholarships. But I think there's NCAA rule where if a walk-on has been on the team for at least 2 years, he can be given a scholarship and it won't count towards the 25 annual limit. I'll check through the latest handbook later tonight.

If the scholarships given to Jarrett and Anene don't count, then two of our January enrollees count towards 2012 ... leaving the Class of 2013 at 23 recruits right now.

Meaning that there's still room at the inn. :)

Now you see why my antacid bill is so high. :p

Yes I understand I managed my daughters college recruitment for three years. Thank God that chapter in my life is over

I wouldn't be hand wringing over a kid who's never played football before.
Thinking the same thing. He could be a diamond in the rough and become an amazing find and story. Or he could end up a kid that doesn't like to get hit and just use up a scholarship for as long as he is on campus. Or anything in between.

You can tell very little for sure based on a practice video, especially when the kid has apparently never played football before. There are some things to like IMHO. His size can't be taught and it appears he has soft hands. I am not at all impressed with his quickness off the ball or in and out of breaks during his routes. I think he is a major project who if he can work on his quickness could pay off, but to be honest I am kind of surprised he was offered without ever having played before. If I was on staff I would have tried to convince him to come to SU as a walk-on this fall with the possibility that he could earn a scholarship and take next year as a redshirt if he developed football-wise.

There's a big difference between a visit and an offer.

He's really rolling the dice. Unless he has a committable offer elsewhere, there's no guarantee there will be offers waiting for him after a year at Milford if he doesn't develop.

imo whoever is guiding this kid is really doing him an injustice. passing up on a free education (a very expensive one mind you) for what exactly? Milford? Next...or as Coach McDonald would say

# @EricWhiteCuse @Coach_Shafer @Coach_Lea love it either your in or your out no time for 2nd guessing #FTAFTF #ACC2013

He's a major project. For me, if he came to SU, great, if not, oh well, it's a major crapshoot either way. But to turn down a full ride at any BCS school in a sport you've never played when you have no other offers in favor of visiting schools you don't have offers at or prepping is lunacy. And I'd say the same if it was SU that offered or Rutgers or Pitt or whomever.

He showed himself the door. So, let's not wish him back. Oh well.

Committed to Colorado on his visit today. Guess he didn't really like our campus or coaches too much

Weird is right. Maybe he had the Colorado offer in hand all along...
