Tennessee Postgame Discussion

I think another problem I’ve seen said once or twice but not talked about enough is, we don’t do stunts or anything on the d-line we play gaps which never generates pressure. Same can be said for offense Tennessee would send 4 guys and would shoot different gaps and the O-line would look lost as Angeli had a guy in his face within a second.

Tennessee Miami ND and Clemson they will be overmatched to an extent.

Every other game they can win (and maybe Miami).

I think Angeli was fine. However I do think that from what I saw, he doesn't really have the "it" factor. Made some good throws but didn't really make any star plays. We can we with him for sure, but these upsets are going to be tough

OK, I’ve read through thread and here’s my thoughts

No surprise, but this was probably too big of a stage for a young, inexperienced team. But you can’t control the schedule based on your personnel.

This is probably the biggest and fastest SU team in history, but we’re still lacking in rangy athletic players like Tennessee. That will need to be Fran’s objective.

Comparisons of Angeli to McCord will persist. It’s not fair to Angeli, who demonstrated he can manage an offense and make the necessary throws. Keep in mind he was facing one of the nation’s top defenses. Angeli will improve with each game, but it isn’t tight to criticize his performance today.

Tennessee’s offense is probably better than we think. The Vols lost a lot from last year, but they’ve reloaded with a lot of talent. We need to improve tackling and our pass rush, but I’m not ready to push the panic button.

We need to get away from giving up big plays and committing mental mistakes.

I see it as a good sign that we were able to run the ball against a very good Tennessee defense.

We essentially outplayed Tennessee in the second half. One more stop, one more play on offense, and it would have got interesting.

The crowd of 45K was disappointing considering Tennessee is 3 hours from Atlanta. Really poor turnout.

UConn won’t be a pushover. We struggled at times against them last year. Coming off a physically draining game, I suspect we may find ourselves in a fight.

Great place to play, great opponent, ok showing. Hoped we would see more. Without the penalties and turnovers it’s maybe a closer game but … we committed them.

Our defense continues to give up big plays. Continues to get no pressure on the QB. Puts Samuels on an island all first half in his first college football game … why? The players seem generally adequate to the task, probably better tackling is needed.

Thought the o line did a good job against tough competition. Willis was great.

Not sure how many of those Tennessee players were actually hurt. I’ve never seen so many players go down on one team in one game.

We walked out of the stadium 90 minutes ago and are still stuck in apocalyptic gridlock in Downtown ATL.
This is part of the reason I didn’t go.
The less-crowded Club World Cup was the same. ATL city traffic cop was a complete dihck to sober people trying to cross the street.

Clean up the mistakes and play good sound football alone, and it’s a different game. That’s a solid team we just played.

Encouraged by today, but the defense certainly needs to be better.

I have more conviction in our season today than I did yesterday. Had no idea what to expect at quarterback.

Angeli plays soft, he is the Charmin Man. He is a decent thrower, but I didnt see anything spectacular in terms of either arm strength or ball placement. He reminded me of DeVito. You just CANNOT fumble for a defensive TD the play after we get a TO. Obviously, his lack of mobility and toughness is a big liability. If there are games when our O line dominates, he will do well. I just dont see this kid elevating the team when we are physically neutral or physically outmanned as we were today.

Not trying to pin the result on Angeli, obviously there was no overcoming the lack of D this afternoon, but college football has become a game where plus QB play is essential, and I am not seeing that we have that.

Game was a blowout, not even as close as the final score, I really wanted to get a glimpse of Collins near the end.
He has no creativity or spontaneity career backup. Get Collins in now for experience for the next two games

I don't get why people think the defense will be fine. The schedule last year was a cake walk compared to this one and we had the same issues with multiple NFL guys on the field

It's only the first game of the season, and most teams do improve over the course of the first 3 or 4 games, don't you think?

The one thing about Angeli that concerns me is his running ability. For some reason I had it in my head that he was maybe halfway between Garrett and McCord (aka serviceable, like a Nassib) in that regard but he appears to be much closer to Kyle on that spectrum.

And you know this how ??
i thought "they very well be" left it up for interpretation? Tennessee wasn't that great defensively. Duke has the best QB in the conference and a good defense with Diaz. GT looked great last night on the road in a hostile environment. We very well only be a favorite in 3 games.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. McNabb years and 2012 we got better as the season progressed. 2019, 2022, 2023 we got way worse.

Those turnovers happened because elite level defensive players make really good plays. Haven’t watched Clemson yet but Tennesse might be the best defense we see as far as individual talent.
I thought they were strong at LB, but lost a ton from last year and it showed.

FSU getting it done today, so far... (just had a devastating special teams failure)
SU didn't
Facts.

Kyle, LeQuint, Pena masked a lot of defensive, specials, & some offensive deficiencies last year.

There was no masking anything today.

Untimely & costly penalties, just like last year.
Special team gaffes, just like last year.
Giving up 8-9 on 1st downs, just like the last 30 years.
Slow to get plays to the QB just like last year.

That said, Frans main dudes were moderately competitive, athletically. So, there's hope we can get 'their', eventually. In Fran we trust...

Am very concerned about the D coach. It being a relative & friend & stinking up the joint for 2 years is a horrible look.

Thought the O was more interesting when the QB was moving away from rushers. But took too long to start doing that.

Concerned w Angelis Kyle-Pitt level horribly timed & costly mistakes. The absolute last thing you need after a momentum swinging recovery is to cough it right back up.

Think some players are better at Instagram& NIL than they are at pass blocking.

Meanwhile, I cannot afford SU, so my frosh is on TV at FSU.

You saw it live, but my sense was he missed some opportunities to scramble that he could have taken, and a few of the ones he tried Tennessee had it covered pretty well.
