Tennessee Postgame Discussion

Great place to play, great opponent, ok showing. Hoped we would see more. Without the penalties and turnovers it’s maybe a closer game but … we committed them.

Our defense continues to give up big plays. Continues to get no pressure on the QB. Puts Samuels on an island all first half in his first college football game … why? The players seem generally adequate to the task, probably better tackling is needed.

Thought the o line did a good job against tough competition. Willis was great.

Not sure how many of those Tennessee players were actually hurt. I’ve never seen so many players go down on one team in one game.
Agree and the announce had the nerve to call out Samuels when he went down claiming he was faking. It seemed like every time we were in an offense flow another Tenn player was down injured but got up and then walked off the field.

You saw it live, but my sense was he missed some opportunities to scramble that he could have taken, and a few of the ones he tried Tennessee had it covered pretty well.
I thought he looked athletic and comfortable when Nixon started rolling him out to help with the pressure. He certainly isn't a Dungey, but he's isn't a statue back there.

Angeli is going to do better as he gets more comfortable with being QB1.
He didn’t look ready today.

This is why you don’t schedule tough teams in the first 2-3 weeks of the season.
I don't see that in big games . To slow, poor reaction time, does not read defense well.

People are going to hate this but Angeli kind of reminded me of Devito
Angeli didn’t run out of bounds instead of throwing the ball away. He also wasn’t the heir apparent for two years.

Angeli played better today than DeVito played in basically any game other than that FSU game where he came in to relieve Dungey.

The frustrating part is that we finally got the right head coach and we can’t give him the money to truly be successful
He’s already been successful. He’s already getting more money, but he’ll never get the type of money that SEC and Big 10 schools get. Most of them are state schools with huge fan bases and a ton of money. Syracuse, a private university with a much smaller fan base, isn’t equipped to raise as much money. But Brown and others are working tirelessly to gain support and financial backing. It’s not easy.

I honestly don't think he has a system. There's no situational awareness at all. Rush with the line only, provide too much cushion and pray.
E Rob seems to think he’s working with T A&M talent and that guys will just win their matchups. We are, and will probably remain, at a talent disadvantage against the top teams.

Need to be able to scheme up pressure when facing a talent disadvantage, can’t let offenses get comfortable. Not impressed with E Rob as a DC.

If this loss was in like week 5 it’d feel a little more “digestible”. It’s that we were all excited and then yeah boom.

I agree with this 100%.

The early hole sucked, but they came back reasonably well. There were a bunch of positives among the too-many negatives.

In the middle of the season, I don't know that a game like this is that useful.

Here, after game 1, we have a real measuring stick, instead of beating up a MAC team.

We know what we need to do to get better, and these guys have played against top level competition.

The talent level at FSU is far superior to SU.
Definitely better, but even when he was here and we had were undersized and less athletic almost across the board he schemed us up well defensively.

I don't have fear of our offense being terrible anymore. As opposed to back when White was DC I never was scared that our defense would be terrible either.

Shafer as the DC was the same way; when you don't have the same physical talent, you have to attack, you have to hide your coverages, you have to do things to keep the other team off balance.

We do very little of that under Robinson. He coaches like we have top talent. And that's fine; our talent does look much better than those teams of 15 years ago.

But he's not coaching to attack; he's coaching to contain. That seems to be his nature. Try to limit mistakes by not over-committing. Our coverage makes too many mistakes, and we don't get to the QB without blitzing, at least not against the top teams.

We need to gamble more on defense. We're not a great team. And our tackling under Robinson has been poor so far. That's got to improve and soon.
